Browns OC Norv Turner doesn't expect Jason Campbell to get as many reps as the younger quarterbacks.
"Jason's played nine years in the league," Turner said. "He's played so much you hope maybe once we get going with everything we're doing he doesn't need as many reps as maybe a young guy does." If we read between the lines a little bit, it suggests the "competition" for the starting job isn't a real one. Turner says he's been impressed with Brandon Weeden after three practice sessions. He'd have to fall flat on his face to not be under center in Week 1. May 21 - 10:13 AM

OC Norval Turner considers Jason Campbell a "bonus" in the Browns' quarterback competition.

In other words, he's insurance. Campbell is going to "compete" with Brandon Weeden in Browns camp, but only because the new braintrust doesn't want to just hand the job to Weeden. Campbell could very easily get on the field if Weeden struggles early in the year, but the odds he leads the team in pass attempts are low.

Citing two league sources, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports Jason Campbell will receive a "legitimate shot" to win the Browns' starting quarterback job over Brandon Weeden.

The competition pumped up by Browns brass is "more than just lip service," the sources said. Weeden will open offseason activities as the starter, but Campbell will receive first-team reps as well. "This is a long, long process and there's a long time between now and our opener," said coach Rob Chudzinski. "We’ve got plenty of time and this is just the first step." We anticipate Weeden winning the job, but the Browns will make him earn it.

Jason Campbell's two-year contract is worth $3.75 million, with $500,000 in guarantees.

It's significantly less than what he made last year. Campbell will be given a shot to compete with Brandon Weeden in training camp, but the Browns don't have any commitment to him beyond this season. He's due just $1.50 million in 2013.
Mar 28 - 11:03 AM

The Browns will let Jason Campbell compete with Brandon Weeden for their starting quarterback job.

Weeden is still the favorite, but Campbell will be given an opportunity in training camp. The Browns also haven't ruled out drafting a quarterback with the sixth overall pick, though that's quite the long shot.
Mar 28 - 9:49 AM

A source tells the Plain Dealer that Jason Campbell's contract with the Browns "is strong."

Campbell is only two years older than Brandon Weeden, has the big arm that a Norv Turner offense requires and has started 71 NFL games. Weeden is certainly the favorite to win the gig, but it wouldn't be a shock if the new Rob Chudzinski regime kept him on a very short leash. Both the Plain Dealer and ESPN Cleveland expect Campbell to be given a "fair shot" to win the starting job outright.
Mar 27 - 8:37 AM

Browns agreed to terms with QB Jason Campbell, formerly of the Bears, on a two-year contract.

Good night, Colt McCoy. Campbell joins McCoy and Brandon Weeden on the QB depth chart, likely forcing the former off the roster. Campbell was a disaster in his lone start of 2012, but was contending with a ferocious 49ers pass rush behind a pathetic Bears offensive line. Going on 32, Campbell's elongated motion makes him a tough sell as a starter, but he's one of the league's more stable, experienced backups. Weeden will likely open camp as Cleveland's starter, but it's within the realm of possibility Campbell gets on the field this season.
Mar 26 - 9:27 PM

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Titans are interested in free agent QB Jason Campbell.

La Canfora says Campbell fits what the Titans are "looking for" in a backup, and that's a veteran. The Bears, Jets, and Browns have also been linked to Campbell, but Cleveland isn't expected to sign him.
Mar 18 - 6:39 PM

The Browns are not expected to sign free agent QB Jason Campbell.

If the Browns are going to bring in real competition for Colt McCoy, they're running out of options. Matt Cassel signed with the Vikings, making a Ryan Mallett trade with the Patriots less likely. The best free agent quarterbacks left on the market are Ryan Fitzpatrick, Campbell and Josh Johnson. The Bears are still trying to retain Campbell as Jay Cutler's backup.
Mar 15 - 8:12 AM

Per the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Browns have expressed interest in free agent QB Jason Campbell.

The Browns need competition for Brandon Weeden, but Campbell wouldn't be hard to beat out. Cleveland is also looking to move on from popgun-armed Colt McCoy. The Jets and Bears have also shown interest in 31-year-old Campbell.
Mar 14 - 2:58 PM

A source tells the New York Post that the Jets have interest in free agent QB Jason Campbell.

The Jets don't appear content to limit their quarterback derby to just Mark Sanchez and David Garrard. Campbell, 31 years old with 71 career starts under his belt, would certainly add to the mix of mediocrity. The Bears are also rumored to be interested in bringing him back as Jay Cutler's backup.
Mar 12 - 6:27 PM

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Bears and free agent Jason Campbell have mutual interest in a new deal.

The hang up will be money, as the Bears likely want Campbell to take a cut from his $3.5 million 2012 salary. Near the top of a hopelessly thin QB market, Campbell may first see what's available in free agency before re-upping in the Windy City.
Mar 8 - 1:34 PM

Jason Campbell suffered a rib injury in the Bears' loss to the 49ers, and was limited in Wednesday's practice.

The extent of the injury is unknown, but Campbell was able to play through it on Monday night. Signs are pointing toward Jay Cutler returning this week, so this is likely not a big deal for Chicago.
Wed, Nov 21, 2012 05:00:00 PM

Jason Campbell completed 14-of-22 passes for just 107 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in Chicago's 32-7, Week 11 loss to the 49ers on Monday night.

Campbell didn't have a fighter's chance in this one with his offensive line book-ended by two turnstiles in RT Gabe Carimi and LT J'Marcus Webb. Campbell was sacked six times on the night. The Bears better hope Jay Cutler (concussion) can return for next week's game against the Vikings because Campbell is a sitting duck. Matt Forte and the running game didn't help out at all either, as they rushed for just 72 yards on 26 carries. Chicago sits at 7-3 and will host Minnesota next week.
Mon, Nov 19, 2012 11:48:00 PM

The Bears announced Jason Campbell as the starter for Monday night's game at San Francisco.

Jay Cutler was never a good bet to play considering his history of concussions, but coach Lovie Smith wanted to leave a seed of doubt in minds of the 49ers. Much like Cutler, Campbell showed a proclivity for targeting Brandon Marshall heavily in last week's game. Although it's a tough matchup with a shaky QB, Marshall is impossible to sit in fantasy leagues while averaging over 100 yards per game.
