Bengals signed TE Alex Smith.
Smith had an impact as a pass-catcher early on his career, hauling in 108 receptions over his first three NFL seasons. But over the last five years, he's turned into a blocking specialist and has caught a total of 52 passes. Smith is capable of chipping in at fullback and setting the edge in the run game. The Bengals are "getting close" to signing free agent TE Alex Smith.

Smith would be brought in to block on the line of scrimmage, perhaps allowing Jermaine Gresham to flex out more. Smith turns 31 years old next month.

The Bengals will host TE Alex Smith for a free-agent visit on Wednesday.

Smith is a blocking specialist in the old Reggie Kelly mold. The Bengals have used a sixth offensive lineman in that role over the past few seasons.

ESPN Cleveland expects the Browns to allow free agent TEs Alex Smith and Ben Watson to walk.

As does the Cleveland Plain Dealer. New coach Rob Chudzinski makes heavy use of tight ends, but the Browns need to get younger and more explosive at the position. A blocking specialist, Smith has just 160 catches in eight seasons.

Alex Smith is now listed as the Browns' starting fullback on their official depth chart.

Smith goes from 6'4/258 tight end to Trent Richardson's oversized lead blocker. He showed well in the role last week when Owen Marecic was a healthy scratch.

Browns TE Alex Smith (concussion) has resumed practicing.

Smith missed three games. The Browns use Smith as a utility tight end, playing him at the line of scrimmage as well as the backfield. His return could cut into Jordan Cameron's playing time.

Browns TE Alex Smith (concussion) is sitting out practice again this week.

Smith has yet to practice since sustaining a concussion in Week 2. Second tight end Jordan Cameron should see increased snaps again versus the Giants.

Alex Smith (concussion) and Mohamed Massaquoi (hamstring) were held out of Browns practice on Tuesday.

It's not a good sign that Smith wasn't ready to go after sitting out last week. Jordan Cameron will likely see increased snaps versus the Ravens, though he's only an option in deep leagues. Massaquoi is expected to miss this week's game.

Browns TE Alex Smith suffered a concussion in the fourth quarter of Week 2 versus the Bengals.

Smith had to be taken to a Cincinnati-area hospital after the game when symptoms wouldn't subside. Although he was released from the hospital later that evening, his status is in doubt for Week 3.

Browns TE Alex Smith's roster spot could be in jeopardy after the team drafted FB/TE Brad Smelley.

Smelley will compete with Smith for the H-back role, but is also expected to push Owen Marecic for snaps at fullback. Although Ben Watson is slated to start at tight end, the Northern Ohio News-Herald considers Evan Moore the only "safe" bet to make the team. Jordan Cameron is also in the mix for reps.

Browns signed TE Alex Smith to a one-year deal.

Third on the depth chart last season, Smith caught 14 passes for 131 yards and one score before landing on injured reserve with a shoulder injury in late December. A blocking specialist, he'll be lucky to repeat those numbers during his age-30 campaign.

Browns placed TE Alex Smith (shoulder) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Smith only sprained the shoulder, so he should enter 2012 free agency 100 percent recovered. The blocking tight end caught 14 passes for 131 yards and one touchdown in 14 games for the Browns this year.
Tue, Dec 20, 2011 11:59:00 AM

Coach Pat Shurmur revealed that TE Alex Smith sustained a "serious" shoulder sprain in Week 15.

At this point, all serious injuries should be season-ending. Smith has 14 catches for 131 yards as the Browns' No. 3 tight end this year. With Ben Watson (concussions) also done, rookie Jordan Cameron should back up Evan Moore in the final two games.

Browns re-signed TE Alex Smith.

Smith signed with Cleveland last May but ended up being active for just three games in 2010, catching one pass for six yards. He'll have to battle for a reserve roster spot behind Ben Watson.
Thu, Mar 3, 2011 02:53:00 PM

Browns signed TE Alex Smith to a one-year contract.

Smith, 28, played in all 16 games with Philadelphia last year and wasn't a liability, if still underwhelming, as a blocking tight end. In Cleveland, Smith could push overpaid Robert Royal out of a roster spot behind Ben Watson.
