Free agent DE Luis Castillo is weighing whether to sit out 2012 due to recurring back issues.
Still just 29, Castillo is expected to take at least a couple of weeks to see if he can get back to full health. If his back cooperates, Castillo will attempt to catch on with a team that will give him more snaps than he was due behind young talents Corey Liuget, Vaughn Martin and Kendall Reyes in San Diego. Chargers released DE Luis Castillo.

Castillo was just re-signed in April after visiting the Chiefs and Patriots in March. Turning 29 in August, Castillo has reportedly been discussing his release with the front office for a while. The Bolts want to go with youth up front, and Castillo is looking for more playing time. The 2005 first-rounder has missed 30 games in six years, including 15 last season after breaking his leg in the opener.

Chargers re-signed DE Luis Castillo to a one-year contract.

Castillo has been a starter in San Diego since A.J. Smith made him the 28th overall pick in the 2005 draft. He'll have to compete hard to keep those duties in 2012. Castillo can't seem to stay healthy, and he was largely ineffective on game days in 2010 and during his one appearance last season.

The Chargers have contract offers out to free agents DE Luis Castillo, FB Jacob Hester and NT Antonio Garay.

According to the Union-Tribune San Diego, there is no "immediate timetable for a response." Castillo is the only player known to have made a visit elsewhere, spending Saturday in New England. If Hester re-signs, he wouldn't be guaranteed a roster spot after the Bolts gave FB Le'Ron McClain a three-year deal last Tuesday.

Free agent DE Luis Castillo visited the Patriots on Saturday.

Castillo would be a typical Patriots' value signing, but the limited interest he's been generating could be a sign his medicals are proving troublesome. Castillo didn't play another snap after breaking his leg in Week 1 last season.

Free agent DE Luis Castillo visited with the Chiefs earlier this week.

The Chargers want Castillo back at a lesser price, but it's not going to happen. Castillo has already received interest from a "handful" of teams on the open market.

ESPN Dallas suggests that the Cowboys may kick the tires on free agent DE Luis Castillo.

It's worth noting that players released ahead of the March 13 start of free agency don't have to wait for the official signing period to begin. Castillo can immediately begin making free agent visits. The Panthers could be another possible landing spot for Castillo. Carolina needs defensive tackle help, and the 29-year-old Castillo knows head coach Ron Rivera well.

Chargers released DE Luis Castillo.

Castillo was due a $3.9 million base salary, in addition to a $1 million roster bonus right around the start of free agency. While the Chargers may be open re-signing Castillo at a lower rate, his inability to consistently stay on the field will damage his free agent market value. Castillo, 28, has played 16-game seasons just twice since entering the NFL in 2004. He missed all but one game in 2011 with a fractured left leg.

According to the Union-Tribune San Diego, team sources have confirmed the Chargers are planning to release LE Luis Castillo.

Castillo has three years and roughly $14.2 million remaining on the six-year contract he signed in 2008. He will presumably be cut loose before his $1 million roster bonus comes due next month. The Chargers are reportedly open to re-signing him after he tests the market.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chargers will "almost certainly" release LE Luis Castillo this offseason.

Castillo broke his leg in the 2011 opener, but San Diego is expected to move on with Vaughn Martin and 2011 first-round pick Corey Liuget at defensive end. Castillo is due $4.9 million in 2012, $1M of which is believed to be in the form of a roster bonus. He'll likely be cut just as the bonus comes due. Still only 28, Castillo has not exceeded 2.5 sacks in any season since 2006.

Chargers placed LE Luis Castillo on injured reserve with a broken leg, ending his season.

Castillo was hurt all the way back in Week 1, but the Chargers kept him on the active roster in hopes he'd be able to contribute down the stretch. Injury prone earlier in his career, Castillo appeared in 30 of a possible 32 games in 2009-10 before going down this season. Under contract for an affordable $3.9 million in 2012, a Chargers team that's struggled to rush the passer likely won't hesitate to bring back one of its best defensive players.

The Chargers "might be close" to placing LE Luis Castillo (broken leg) on injured reserve.

"For a while, he was making progress and then, like sometimes happens with these injuries, he’s kind of leveled off right now," coach Norv Turner said. "Obviously, at some point we’ve got to consider making a move." Castillo has been sidelined since Week 1. It's likely he'll be sent to I.R. the next time the Bolts need to clear a roster spot.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Chargers believe LE Luis Castillo (leg) "can come back by (the) end of the season."

Castillo broke his tibia, and he's expected to miss at least 12 weeks. The Chargers will likely keep him on the roster in hopes that he'll help the team down the stretch, but there are no guarantees with an injury of this nature. Jacques Cesaire and Vaughn Martin will see time in Castillo's place.

According to agent David Canter, Chargers DE Luis Castillo (leg) and K Nate Kaeding (knee) are both in danger of missing the season.

It's worth noting that Canter isn't Castillo or Kaeding's agent, but he does rep two Chargers and has been accurate about info like this in the past. Canter says Castillo's injury is a broken leg (a broken tibia, to be exact, per the San Diego Union-Tribune), while it's being reported that Kaeding tore his left ACL on Sunday's opening kickoff. Castillo is a much bigger loss. A rare 3-4 "five technique" end who can both rush the passer and plug the run, he's one of San Diego's best players on defense. It's a significant drop-off to Jacques Cesiare.

Chargers LE Luis Castillo was carted out of the locker room Sunday night with a "large brace" on his left knee.

"Never a good sign," observed ESPN's Tom Pelissero. Castillo looks to have a serious injury, though that won't be confirmed before post-game tests are taken. The Chargers have a serious keeper in rookie RE Corey Liuget, but Castillo is their rock on the left side. Jacques Cesaire is next in line for starts. Emerging younster Vaughn Martin is also a candidate for more action.
