Cowboys RE DeMarcus Ware has full range of motion in his surgically repaired right shoulder and has resumed weightlifting.
He hopes to participate in May OTAs on a limited basis and promises to be "100 percent" for training camp. Despite previous reports, Ware never had elbow surgery. "It’s doing really good," he said. "I’m so happy I didn’t have to have a second surgery." Ware racked up 11.5 sacks in 2012, but only 1.5 over the last six games. He's now going to be a down lineman as opposed to rush 'backer. The Cowboys project to have the lightest starting defensive end duo in football this season.

Per numbers compiled by Blogging the Beast's Jimmy Kempski, the average starting 4-3 defensive end weighs 273.6 pounds. Converted OLBs DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer are listed at 254 and 250, respectively. This is an obvious concern for Dallas' run defense. At an average of 291.5 pounds, the Seahawks have the heaviest defensive end tandem (Red Bryant, Cliff Avril). The Cowboys' 252-pound average would be the NFL's lightest by nearly six pounds.

The Cowboys restructured DeMarcus Ware's contract, converting $5 million of his base salary into a signing bonus.

Ware is due $6 million between salary and bonuses. The move clears up $4 million in cap space. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Cowboys plan to rework the contracts of "about a dozen more players" before the start of free agency on March 12.

According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, DeMarcus Ware and Jason Witten are among the players the Cowboys will approach about restructuring if they can't agree to a new deal with Tony Romo before free agency.

Rapoport also expects the Cowboys to approach RT Doug Free, CB Brandon Carr, LG Nate Livings, Kyle Orton and CB Orlando Scandrick if they can't reduce Romo's $16.8 million cap number before March 12. The sides don't appear to be making much progress on an extension.

DeMarcus Ware officially does not need elbow surgery.

There was a lot of back-and-forth on this, but coach Jason Garrett said at the Combine that it was a "good outcome" and Ware was getting "better and better." Ware already had shoulder surgery after the season, so he'll be able to focus on that rehab. He should be ready for training camp.

A source tells ESPN Dallas that DeMarcus Ware may not need elbow surgery after all.

Ware, who dislocated his elbow in December, originally said he would go under the knife to clean out some fragments. Perhaps doctors have decided that simple rest will do the trick. Ware already underwent shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum right after the season, but he'll certainly be ready well before training camp. He's never missed a game in his eight-year career.

DeMarcus Ware will undergo minor right elbow surgery soon.

"Just to get the bone fragments cleaned up," Ware said. The Pro Bowl outside linebacker hyperextended his elbow in December. Ware underwent right shoulder surgery in mid-January, and at the time, he was unsure if elbow repairs were needed. He hopes to be cleared for OTAs, but conceded he most likely won't be ready until training camp. Ware, of course, will make the transition to 4-3 defensive end this summer.
Feb 1 - 9:45 AM

DeMarcus Ware believes the Cowboys' defense will benefit from the change to a 4-3 base.

Ware apparently has no problem switching from a 3-4 outside linebacker to a 4-3 end in Monte Kiffin's Cover-2 defense. He added that his recovery from shoulder surgery is going fine and confirmed he'll be ready for Week 1 of the 2013 season. Ware still has a prime year or two left as he enters his age-31 season.

DeMarcus Ware is expected to play the "Simeon Rice role" in new DC Monte Kiffin's 4-3 scheme.

Ware will be making the change from 3-4 outside linebacker to 4-3 defensive end. While working with Kiffin in Tampa, Rice established himself as one of the league's dominant pass-rushers. Between 2001 and 2005 he totaled 67.5 sacks and 15 forced fumbles from the right end spot. As long as Ware's shoulder is ready to go, he'll have plenty of upside with his hand in the turf.

Cowboys OLB DeMarcus Ware "hopes" he'll be ready for training camp after undergoing right shoulder surgery on Thursday.

Ware also underwent a "minor" procedure on his hyperextended right elbow, leaving him with a 5-7 month recovery timetable. Ware sounds likely to miss the Cowboys' entire offseason program, and will be shaky for the beginning of camp. Although there's no such thing as good missed time in camp, it wouldn't be a major concern for a veteran of Ware's status. Ware has never missed a game in eight NFL seasons. We fully expect him to be ready for Week 1.

Jan 9 - 7:17 PM

Cowboys OLB DeMarcus Ware will undergo right shoulder surgery on Thursday, but doesn't have an elbow operation scheduled "as of now."

Ware said he'd need both shoulder and elbow surgeries following Dallas' season-ending loss, so today's news is actually a net positive. It's unclear how serious Ware's shoulder operation will be, but he should be 100 percent well ahead of camp. Ware's mobility was significantly hampered down the stretch, but he still graded out as a top-12 3-4 outside linebacker in Pro Football Focus' ratings.
Jan 9 - 6:28 PM

Speaking following Sunday's loss, Cowboys OLB DeMarcus Ware said he needs offseason surgery on both his right shoulder and elbow.

Ware's injuries reduced him to a shell of his usual self down the stretch, and mostly limited him to passing downs in Sunday's season-ending loss. Although Ware is seemingly constantly injured, he still graded out as one of the better 3-4 outside linebackers in Pro Football Focus' ratings this season, and has never missed a game in his eight-year career.

The Cowboys are considering limiting DeMarcus Ware (elbow, shoulder) to passing situations in Sunday's game against the Redskins.

Ware could be used strictly as a pass rusher after not practicing at all this week, and is expected to play with a shoulder harness and elbow brace on Sunday. He missed the majority of Week 16 against the Saints and has been playing at significantly less than 100 percent down the stretch. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Ware may need surgery in the offseason.

Cowboys OLB DeMarcus Ware will play Sunday night's game against the Redskins donning a shoulder harness and elbow brace.

Although his effectiveness has been compromised, Ware has earned praise from teammates for playing at significantly less than 100 percent down the stretch. The harness is to prevent against Ware's shoulder "popping out again." He also has a hyperextended elbow. Ware was able to participate on just 59-of-95 plays in Week 16 against the Saints and has 1.5 sacks over his last five games.

Cowboys OLB DeMarcus Ware may need offseason right shoulder surgery.

"I can answer that, but I'm not going to answer that," Ware said Thursday. "Maybe. Maybe not. Wait to the end of the season to see." It sounds like the perennial Pro Bowler will indeed need to undergo some sort of operation. Ware has battled shoulder and elbow issues all year long, but he has yet to miss a game. He's fully expected to suit up for Week 17 versus the Redskins despite not practicing at all this week. Ware has recorded 11.5 sacks and four forced fumbles in 2012.
