Chiefs re-signed ILB Derrick Johnson to a three-year, $21 million contract.
Johnson had a bounce-back year after missing most of 2014 to Achilles surgery, leading the Chiefs with 116 tackles and four sacks. He'll remain with the only organization he's ever played for. The $7 million AAV places Johnson in the top-12 among inside linebackers. Johnson's new deal keeps him signed through 2018, his age-36 season. Mar 9 - 7:30 PM

Chiefs GM John Dorsey said he "will do everything" he can to re-sign impending free agent ILB Derrick Johnson.

Johnson also wants to stay in Kansas City. Even with several big names headed to the open market, the Chiefs should be able to work something out with their veteran linebacker. Johnson bounced back from an Achilles' injury to record 116 tackles and four sacks last season. He has been with the Chiefs since 2005.

Speaking about free agent ILB Derrick Johnson on Thursday, Chiefs GM John Dorsey said "we're not going to let good players go."

Dorsey also said he's recently met with Johnson's rep. Johnson is on the record as wanting to remain in Kansas City, but Dorsey has a cornucopia of big names to deal with in free agency, with Eric Berry, Sean Smith, Tamba Hali and Jaye Howard joining Johnson on his way to the open market. Berry is probably the most likely candidate for the franchise tag if progress isn't made on a long-term deal sometime in the next few days.

In a radio interview, impending free agent ILB Derrick Johnson said he "no doubt" wants to remain with the Chiefs.

"Talking with the Chiefs and hopefully that progresses and we'll see where it goes from there," Johnson said. "I want to be a Kansas City Chief, no doubt. I don't want to go to another team." The Chiefs would like to keep Johnson as well, but they are facing a free-agent crunch with S Eric Berry, CB Sean Smith, OLB Tamba Hali and DT Jaye Howard also headed to the open market. Johnson recorded 116 tackles and four sacks last season, his 11th in Kansas City.

Free agent ILB Derrick Johnson is expected to command $6 million annually.

Johnson shouldn't get much higher than his $5.25 million 2015 salary. The Chiefs want to keep Johnson, but also need to re-sign Eric Berry, Tamba Hali, and DT Jaye Howard. Johnson was PFF's No. 3 inside linebacker this season.

Chiefs ILB Derrick Johnson (Achilles) has been cleared for OTAs.

Johnson has been a full participant in Kansas City’s offseason program. Nine months removed from Achilles surgery, he should be close to 100 percent. The Chiefs are counting on the return of Johnson and Mike DeVito to improve what was one of the worst run defenses in the league last season.

Chiefs ILB Derrick Johnson (Achilles') and DE Mike DeVito (Achilles') are participating in voluntary workouts.

Both players went down in Week 1. It's possible they'll still be babied through the rest of the offseason with an eye toward being 100 percent for training camp. The Chiefs are counting on Johnson and DeVito to restore order to their run defense.

Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said ILB Derrick Johnson's roster spot is safe.

Johnson is coming off a torn Achilles' tendon, is 32 years old and the cap-strapped Chiefs could free up $5.2 million by cutting him. But they're counting on his return (as well as Mike DeVito's) to correct a run defense that ranked 28th in the league last year. "In terms of the modern era of the Chiefs, it’s hard to think about the club without thinking about Derrick at inside linebacker. ... We’re looking forward to having him back this year, hopefully good as new," Hunt said.

Chiefs placed ILB Derrick Johnson on injured reserve with a torn Achilles' tendon, ending his season.

A Pro Bowler each of the past three seasons, Johnson's absence leaves a massive void for a team that was already having trouble filling the spot next to him. Two months shy of his 32nd birthday, Johnson is signed through 2015, where he'll make an affordable $4 million.

Coach Andy Reid confirmed ILB Derrick Johnson (torn Achilles') will miss the remainder of the season.

It's a mammoth loss for a defense that was shredded by the Titans in Week 1. Johnson is an All-Pro inside linebacker and excels in coverage. With fellow ILB Joe Mays (wrist) already on short-term I.R., the Chiefs are down to their Nos. 3 and 4 inside 'backers. The Chiefs will be a defense for fantasy owners to target, especially for running backs. Kansas City also lost run-plugging LE Mike Devito to a torn Achilles' on Sunday. Montee Ball gets them in Week 2.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Chiefs believe ILB Derrick Johnson has a torn Achilles' tendon.

It would be a devastating blow to Kansas City's front seven, particularly after losing fellow ILB Joe Mays (wrist surgery) indefinitely. Johnson is an All-Pro caliber player in the middle. Kansas City will be forced to move forward with special teamers Josh Mauaga and James-Michael Johnson at inside linebacker.

Chiefs ILB Derrick Johnson was carted off the field in Sunday's Week 1 game with an Achilles' tendon injury.

It's a significant loss because Kansas City's other starting inside linebacker, Joe Mays, is out after undergoing wrist surgery. The Chiefs will have to make due with Josh Mauga and James-Michael Johnson on the inside.

New DC Bob Sutton plans to instill a more aggressive attitude into a Chiefs defense that produced a league-low 13 turnovers last season.

"Coach Sutton is definitely going to bring an attack-style defense to our ball club," said ILB Derrick Johnson. "Of course the main objective is to win, but takeaways are going to be big for us this year." The Chiefs’ seven interceptions last year were the fewest in a season in club history, and that includes two strike-shortened years.

Chiefs ILB Derrick Johnson (groin) is active for Sunday's Week 5 game against the Ravens.

Johnson may be operating at less than 100 percent, but he's safe to use in IDP circles. Through four games this year, Johnson has totaled 32 tackles and one sack. The Chiefs will be without DE Glenn Dorsey (calf) and DE Ropati Pitoitua (elbow). Their other inactives: RB Peyton Hillis, S Kendrick Lewis, QB Ricky Stanzi, WR Devon Wylie and CB Jalil Brown.

The Chiefs are confident ILB Derrick Johnson (ankle) will be available for their Week 1 game against Atlanta.

They're "hopeful" about LCB Brandon Flowers (heel), as well, but not as optimistic about FS Kendrick Lewis (shoulder). A star on the inside of Romeo Crennel's 3-4, Johnson amassed 131 tackles, two sacks, and two interceptions last season. The 29-year-old Johnson hasn't missed a game since 2009.
