New DC Bob Sutton plans to instill a more aggressive attitude into a Chiefs defense that produced a league-low 13 turnovers last season.
"Coach Sutton is definitely going to bring an attack-style defense to our ball club," said ILB Derrick Johnson. "Of course the main objective is to win, but takeaways are going to be big for us this year." The Chiefs’ seven interceptions last year were the fewest in a season in club history, and that includes two strike-shortened years. Sat, Apr 6, 2013 09:38:00 AM

Chiefs ILB Derrick Johnson (groin) is active for Sunday's Week 5 game against the Ravens.

Johnson may be operating at less than 100 percent, but he's safe to use in IDP circles. Through four games this year, Johnson has totaled 32 tackles and one sack. The Chiefs will be without DE Glenn Dorsey (calf) and DE Ropati Pitoitua (elbow). Their other inactives: RB Peyton Hillis, S Kendrick Lewis, QB Ricky Stanzi, WR Devon Wylie and CB Jalil Brown.

The Chiefs are confident ILB Derrick Johnson (ankle) will be available for their Week 1 game against Atlanta.

They're "hopeful" about LCB Brandon Flowers (heel), as well, but not as optimistic about FS Kendrick Lewis (shoulder). A star on the inside of Romeo Crennel's 3-4, Johnson amassed 131 tackles, two sacks, and two interceptions last season. The 29-year-old Johnson hasn't missed a game since 2009.

Chiefs ILB Derrick Johnson suffered an ankle injury that "could be significant" in Thursday's preseason finale.

Backup QB Brady Quinn also left with an injury that could be significant, which might spur GM Scott Pioli to seek a much-needed upgrade behind Matt Cassel. If Johnson joins pass rusher Tamba Hali (suspension) on the sidelines next week, the Falcons offense will get a significant matchup boost.

Chiefs ILB Derrick Johnson set a franchise record with 179 tackles in 2011 and made his first career Pro Bowl.

The NFL credited Johnson with 131 tackles, so this stat was via the team's counting. He was also voted by teammates as the Chiefs' MVP. "It will be hard to do that again next year with Jamaal (Charles) coming back," Johnson joked. Pro Football Focus graded Johnson as the NFL's fourth-best 3-4 inside linebacker, behind only NaVorro Bowman, Brian Cushing, and Patrick Willis.

Chiefs ILB Derrick Johnson already has a career-high 126 tackles through 15 games.

Johnson has gone from Todd Haley's doghouse in 2009 to joining Tamba Hali as the only Chiefs in the Pro Bowl this season. A nucleus player for the Chiefs at age 29, Johnson has emerged as one of the top inside linebackers in the game.

Chiefs ILB Derrick Johnson recorded a career-high 17 tackles while knocking down four passes against the Rams in Week 15.

Coach Todd Haley was abnormally effusive in praise, calling it a "true all-pro effort" while citing Johnson as the "epitome" of what the Chiefs are trying to build. Johnson was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for the effort. He also merits strong consideration for the Pro Bowl as the well as the All-Pro team.

Chiefs agreed to terms with ILB Derrick Johnson on a five-year, $34 million extension. The deal includes $15 million guaranteed.

Johnson was part of coach Todd Haley's large doghouse last season, but has started every game this year and is averaging 8.1 tackles per game. His rookie contract was set to expire after this season. The highly athletic every-down linebacker turns 28 in two weeks and has proven to be a perfect fit in Romeo Crennel's defense. His days in the doghouse are over.

Derrick Johnson has dropped 3 interceptions through his first 7 games in 2010.

Johnson has one pick on the year, but he's dropped some potential game changers. Says Johnson, "I always thought I had pretty good hands. I still do." It's hard to judge a linebacker's play simply on interceptions, and Johnson has a team high 57 tackles. The former high school wideout is currently playing for a long-term contract.

Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports reports that the Chiefs plan to sign ILB Derrick Johnson to a lucrative extension.

"He's not going anywhere," writes Robinson. Johnson was buried in Todd Haley's doghouse as a backup, nickel linebacker for all of last season, but he's emerged as an every-down player under new defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel. Johnson, who turns 28 later this month, is in the final year of his rookie contract. He was the No. 15 overall pick in the 2005 draft.

Derrick Johnson has beaten out Demorrio Williams for one of the starting inside linebacker spots for the Chiefs.

The other inside starting spot also appears to have been decided, with Jovan Belcher picked over Corey Mays. Johnson had a falling out with Todd Haley last year (who didn't?), but still has the most talent in Kansas City's linebacker corps. Williams is likely to replace Johnson on passing downs.

Derrick Johnson and Demorrio Williams are still battling for one inside linebacker spot.

Jovan Belcher and Corey Mays are competing for the other spot inside. With the starters expected to play into the third quarter against Philadelphia tonight, we should get a read on what coach Todd Haley is thinking (if he's thinking at all). Johnson is the more talented player, but has been in Haley's doghouse.

The Lions reportedly had internal discussions about Chiefs ILB Derrick Johnson earlier in the summer, and could revisit the trade idea now that Jordon Dizon (knee) is out for the season.

The Detroit News is just speculating here, but Johnson has been in coach Todd Haley's doghouse for some time now. Perhaps a fresh start in a new scheme would spark Johnson. With Dizon out for the year and DeAndre Levy struggling with a back injury, the Lions badly need help in the linebacker corps.

Chiefs ILB Derrick Johnson was still playing in the 4th quarter of Friday night's preseason opener.

It looks like Johnson is back in coach Todd Haley's doghouse, as he had no place being on the field with the scubs unless he's being viewed as one of them. Johnson seems unlikely at this point to be an every-down starter.

Chiefs ILB Derrick Johnson said he's talked with coach Todd Haley and the two are on better terms.

Johnson publicly questioned his coach last season after he was benched, but he and Haley appear to have patched things up enough to have a working relationship. "We’ve had private talks, just up and down the field, whenever we get a chance," Johnson said. Johnson said he intends to win a starting spot, but the Chiefs are viewing him more as a situational player.
