Free agent DL Marcus Spears has officially retired.
Spears never fully recovered from a 2013 knee injury, appearing in just five games with the Ravens last year before being waived. A 2005 first-round pick, Spears spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Cowboys as a five-technique defensive end and situational run stopper. Spears, 31, has signed with the SEC Network and will pursue a career in broadcasting. Sat, Apr 5, 2014 02:21:00 PM

Ravens waived DL Marcus Spears.

Signed to a two-year, $3.55 million deal in March, Spears struggled with a knee injury and got outplayed by Brandon Williams. The 30-year-old run plugger finishes with 10 tackles and no sacks in five games.

Ravens agreed to terms with DE Marcus Spears, formerly of the Cowboys, on a two-year, $3.55 million contract.

Earlier Friday, the Ravens were said to have "serious" interest in Spears. They made the deal happen with the Cowboys' castoff. Spears, 30, has zero pass-rush ability, but can hold his own against the run. He'll be a backup in Baltimore.

The Ravens reportedly have "serious interest" in free agent DE Marcus Spears.

Spears, 30, has been a bust since Dallas selected him 20th overall in the 2005 draft, but he'd add a 6-foot-4, 315-pound presence at "five technique" in the Ravens' 3-4 defense. Spears would likely be a rotational end with Baltimore.

Cowboys released DE Marcus Spears as a June 1 cut.

As expected. Spears had no guaranteed money left on his deal, has been underperforming for virtually his entire career, and doesn't fit a 4-3. Since the Cowboys took him 20th overall in 2005, Spears has totaled 10 sacks and been an average run-stopper at best. Now 30, we wouldn't expect a robust market.

The Dallas Morning News says DE Marcus Spears' days with the Cowboys are "over."

Spears just signed a new five-year deal prior to the 2011 season, but he has been a bust since being a first-round pick way back in 2005. Turning 30 in March, Spears is due $2 million in 2013, but has no guaranteed money left on his deal. He played in 15 games in 2012, starting six, and recorded 25 tackles. Spears is decent against the run but has no pass rush ability.

The Cowboys have moved Marcus Spears to back to left defensive end.

Spears' move to the right side last season turned out to be a disaster. He posted a career-low 16 tackles while managing just one sack. "It's like telling a right-handed shooter to shoot left-handed. It was completely different." When comfortable, Spears is at least serviceable as a run-stuffer.

Cowboys DE Marcus Spears (groin) returned to practice on Wednesday.

Spears strained his groin on August 22, missing the Cowboys' final few exhibition games. He's tentatively expected to start against the Jets Sunday. Shonn Greene remains a quality RB2 start in non-PPR leagues. Spears probably won't be in the best of shape, and Dallas' run defense sputtered in preseason.

Cowboys DE Marcus Spears is expected to miss the rest of the preseason with a strained groin.

Spears is frustrated that the injury will take away from his progress learning DC Rob Ryan's defense, but he expects to be back for the season opener. The Cowboys have plenty of depth with Igor Olshansky and Jason Hatcher as rotational ends.

Cowboys agreed to terms with DE Marcus Spears on a five-year, $19.2 million contract.

As ESPN's Adam Schefter notes, this leaves less money in the fold for a Nnamdi Asomugha run. We'd bet pretty heavily that Aso goes to the Jets. The Spears move is a serious head scratcher, reeking of desperation. He's generated no free agency buzz all offseason, and the Cowboys appear likely to lose Jason Hatcher in addition to new Redskins DE Stephen Bowen. Spears figures to return as Dallas' starter opposite Igor Olshansky. Neither is a playmaker, and NT Jay Ratliff showed up to camp at a lightweight 285 pounds on Friday.

The Cowboys will not attempt to re-sign free agent DE Marcus Spears or free agent SS Gerald Sensabaugh.

The Cowboys gave Spears less money than "backups" Stephen Bowen and Jason Hatcher last year, and he landed on injured reserve with a strained (probably torn) calf muscle in November. They'll be more interested in bringing back Bowen and Hatcher. Sensabaugh will also hit the open market. According to ESPN Dallas, the Cowboys are looking for a replacement in the draft.

Cowboys placed DE Marcus Spears on injured reserve with a strained calf, ending his season.

Spears probably would be healthy enough to play sometime next month, but the Cowboys couldn't afford to have him taking up a roster spot with Jason Hatcher (groin) and Sean Lissemore (ankle) also nursing injuries. Stephen Bowen is expected to take Spears' place in the starting lineup. The 20th overall pick in the 2005 draft, Spears is headed for free agency in 2011.

The Cowboys are considering placing DE Marcus Spears and KR Akwasi Owusu-Ansah on injured reserve.

Spears will be sidelined at least a month with a calf injury, and Owusu-Ansah is dealing with a high ankle sprain. The Cowboys could use the roster space, as they're currently down three defensive linemen. Former Giant defensive end Jeremy Clark has been brought in for depth.

Cowboys DE Marcus Spears will miss 4-6 weeks with a strained left calf.

Spears suffered the injury in the debacle against the Packers. The Cowboys are getting really thin on the defensive line with Jason Hatcher (groin) and Sean Lissemore (ankle) also nursing injuries. They're expected to bring in one or two linemen this week to provide depth.

Cowboys DE Marcus Spears will undergo an MRI on his left calf Monday.

Spears was knocked out of Sunday's game in the third quarter and was unable to return. We'll know more about his status once the results of the MRI are in.
