Former Bengals assistant and current defensive coordinator for the Orlando franchise of the UFL, Chuck Bresnahan, believes Odell Thurman can help an NFL team if reinstated this offseason.
Thurman is under indefinite suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Bresnahan says the linebacker played "lights-out football" for Orlando, and several NFL teams have expressed an interest in signing a "more mature" Thurman if he gains reinstatement. Thurman was accused of punching and shattering a man's jaw at a water park last year, but claimed it was a case of mistaken identity. Thurman, still only 25, remains on indefinite suspension by the NFL. He last played in 2005.

An Erie County judge granted a continuance in the trial of former Bengals LB Odell Thurman.

Thurman was set to go on trial last Thursday for felonious assault, but his attorney contends that the linebacker was in Georgia at the time of the incident. Thurman has been indefinitely suspended by the NFL and is unlikely to return to the field anytime soon.

Former Bengals LB Odell Thurman is being sought by Sandusky, Ohio police on a felony assault charge.

Thurman, who is currently serving an indefinite suspension from the NFL, allegedly punched a man in the face and broke his jaw at Kalahari Waterpark on May 27. Police say the two were arguing about a place in line. Thurman, 25, won't be getting another shot in the league anytime soon.

NFL suspended free agent LB Odell Thurman indefinitely for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

A league spokesman said that Thurman "will not be considered for reinstatement until after the 2008 season," but this likely wraps up his career. Come next winter, Thurman will have sat out three straight seasons.

SI.com's Jim Trotter reports ex-Bengals LB Odell Thurman has violated the NFL's substance abuse policy again and faces an indefinite suspension.

Thurman missed the past two seasons due to suspensions tied to drug abuse. If Trotter's report is true, this is a sad end to a troubled career. This is likely why the 24-year-old wasn't claimed on waivers.

The player rep for free agent LB Odell Thurman expects to speak with "half a dozen" teams about his client next week.

Maybe like half the league was interested in Javon Walker in March. Thurman has cleared waivers and will likely have to take a deal for the minimum. The Oakland Tribune's Jerry McDonald suggests the Raiders could be in the mix.

The Falcons denied any interest in recently waived LB Odell Thurman.

"We are pleased with our linebackers," GM Thomas Dimitroff said. "We'll move forward with the players we have on our roster." Thurman is a Georgia alum, so there was naturally speculation that Atlanta might have interest.

Bengals waived LB Odell Thurman. Profootballtalk.com reports the move was made because Thurman didn't report for voluntary workouts.

Thurman, who was reinstated from suspension in April, didn't show for OTAs after the death of his grandmother. If the reasoning for his release is correct, the Bengals are violating NFL rules because the workouts aren't mandatory. It remains to be seen if the weak Players' Union will take action. The Bengals are also left without a true middle linebacker. Thurman has his demons, but figures to be claimed because of his talent. He's also inexpensive.

Bengals beat writer Chuck Ludwig guesses that Odell Thurman, Keith Rivers, and Darryl Blackstock will be the team's starting linebackers this year.

Thurman would play MIKE with Rivers on the weak side and Blackstock at strong side. Blackstock has to hold off Rashad Jeanty and Ahmad Brooks, but may be the best pass rusher of the group. Thurman has big IDP upside.

Bengals LB Odell Thurman has been reinstated from suspension.

Thurman was originally suspended for the '06 season after violating the league's substance abuse policy. He violated his probation last year and had a year tacked on. Thurman was one of the NFL's most promising young linebackers as a rookie in 2005. If he hasn't lost his edge, he could compete to start in the middle with Ahmad Brooks or at WLB with Dhani Jones.

Bengals president Mike Brown expects to receive word on suspended LB Odell Thurman's potential reinstatement by mid-April.

Brown says that's when the NFL informed him they'd make their decision. Thurman is already participating in the team's offseason program and should be in good shape as he battles Dhani Jones and Ahmad Brooks for playing time.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says he's "encouraged" by suspended LB Odell Thurman's decision to participate in the Bengals' offseason program.

Goodell expects to make a decision on whether to reinstate Thurman before the start of training camp. As long as he keeps his nose clean between now and July, Thurman should be an active member of the Bengals this season.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday that he expects to make a decision on suspended LB Odell Thurman by the start of training camp.

Don't give yourself too much time, Roger. Thurman has sat out the past two years on suspension. "He's in the program. He can make progress," Goodell said. "If he can do that, we will make a decision prior to training camp."
