Derek Anderson completed 18-of-28 passes for 278 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions in the Panthers' Week 5 loss to the Bucs on Monday night.
Anderson got the start for a concussed Cam Newton. He didn't even attempt a pass in the first quarter as the Bucs dominated time of possession, and the Panthers only ran three plays in the opening frame. But Anderson made some great downfield throws in the second and third quarters before ultimately collapsing in the second half. His first interception was a telegraphed ball to Kelvin Benjamin that was tipped in the air. The second pick was a god-awful throw into double-coverage to Greg Olsen on 1st-and-goal from the one-yard line. And Anderson mixed a lost fumble on a third-down scramble in between. One of the lone positives for Anderson was him peppering Olsen with 12 targets, turning them into a 9-181 line. Newton is expected to be back for Week 6 at the Saints. Mon, Oct 10, 2016 11:43:00 PM

On in relief of Cam Newton (concussion), Derek Anderson completed 17-of-23 passes for 172 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the Panthers' 48-33, Week 4 loss to the Falcons.

Gifted nearly an entire fourth quarter of comeback mode, Anderson gobbled up soft fronts before tossing a pick six on a late drive where the Panthers could have tied the game with a two-point conversion. He then promptly threw INT No. 2. Newton has not been good this season, but the suddenly defense-less Panthers will be in trouble if Anderson is forced to start Week 5 against the Bucs.

Panthers signed QB Derek Anderson to a two-year, $5 million extension through 2017.

Anderson, 32, made two starts for the Panthers last season, leading the team to a 2-0 record while Cam Newton was hurt. Across those two starts and parts of three other games, Anderson completed 65-of-97 passes (67 percent) for 701 yards and a 5:0 TD:INT ratio. He's one of the better backups with a rocket arm.

Derek Anderson completed 25-of-40 throws for 277 yards and a touchdown in the Panthers' Week 15 win over the Bucs.

Anderson was wildly inaccurate in the first half. He opened the third quarter with a quick two-yard TD strike to Jerricho Cotchery after a Josh McCown lost fumble. Although Anderson wasn't great in this game, he got his second win as a 2014 spot starter for Cam Newton and kept Kelvin Benjamin and Greg Olsen heavily involved. He's proving to be an ideal NFL backup. Cam Newton is expected to return from his back injury in Week 16 against Cleveland.

Derek Anderson will be the Panthers' Week 15 starting quarterback against the Bucs.

As expected following Cam Newton's car accident that resulted in two fractured transverse process in his back on Tuesday. Newton is day-to-day and will have a chance to play Week 16. Anderson got the start Week 1 against this same Bucs team, completing 24-of-34 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns. He's tossed four touchdowns in total this season, with three of them going to Kelvin Benjamin. Anderson will be in play in daily leagues thanks to his minimum price and plus matchup. Benjamin remains a must-start WR2.

Derek Anderson completed 24-of-34 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns in the Panthers' Week 1 win over the Bucs, 20-14.

Anderson was terrific, showing a willingness to throw to 6-foot-5 rookie Kelvin Benjamin even when he was "covered," and tossing heat seekers down the seam to Greg Olsen. Probably not even the Panthers themselves could have foreseen Anderson playing so well after not making an NFL start since 2010. Although we anticipate Cam Newton (ribs) returning in Week 2 against Detroit, it's good to know that the Panthers' passing game is in capable hands if Cam suffers another injury. Anderson has never been a precise passer, but when he's on his game he is aggressive and has an absolute cannon of an arm.

FOX broadcaster Ronde Barber says Derek Anderson was part of the pre-game production meeting with the broadcasting crew.

Cam Newton was also in attendance. Pre-game production meetings are reserved for coaches, and a select few starters from each team. In other words, it's unheard of for the backup quarterback to attend one. Being that Barber is a former Buc, it's possible coach Ron Rivera sent both Anderson and Newton to the meeting so that Barber couldn't tip off his former team. Newton and his bruised ribs are still a game-time decision. We hope to know something this morning.

Panthers re-signed QB Derek Anderson.

Anderson, 31 in June, has attempted just four passes since the 2010 season. He'll be back to hold the clipboard as Cam Newton's backup. Newton has yet to miss a start.

Panthers re-signed QB Derek Anderson to a one-year contract.

Once former Panthers OC Rob Chudzinski and the Browns declined to make overtures, Anderson was a lock to return to Carolina. He's held Cam Newton's clipboard for the last two seasons and has reportedly been a steadying influence. Newton has not missed a start in his NFL career.

Sources tell the Charlotte Observer that free agent QB Derek Anderson is expected to re-sign with the Panthers.

There was chatter that Anderson would be following Rob Chudzinski back to Cleveland, where DA somehow made a Pro Bowl in 2007. Instead, he'll stick with the Panthers as Cam Newton's backup. Anderson has reportedly "drawn praise for his attitude" in Carolina's quarterback room.

The Browns have reportedly been in contact with impending free agent Derek Anderson about re-joining Rob Chudzinski in Cleveland.

If so, it would be a violation of the league's tampering rules because free agency hasn't begun. Anderson hinted on his Facebook page that a deal was already in the works to return to Cleveland as a backup QB. "Looks like it is time to make a return to a familiar place for some unfinished business," said Anderson. "I'd be honored to return to Cleveland to play football if the fans would have me."

Panthers re-signed QB Derek Anderson to a one-year contract.

Anderson is "just excited to get back and build on the success that we had last season." Familiar with Rob Chudzinski's offense from their time together in Cleveland, Anderson will back up Cam Newton again in 2012.

Derek Anderson is listed as the Panthers' No. 2 quarterback on their latest depth chart, ahead of Jimmy Clausen.

Anderson overtook Clausen by going 11-of-19 for 192 yards and a touchdown in the exhibition finale. Clausen labored all preseason, finishing with a 52.2 completion percentage on 46 attempts, a 5.7 YPA, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Anderson is also a favorite of new Panthers OC Rob Chudzinski.

Cam Newton and Jimmy Clausen have received almost all of the Panthers' camp reps at quarterback.

Coach Ron Rivera insisted Derek Anderson would compete for the starting job, but his actions tell a different story. Newton and Clausen will continue to rotate first-teams snaps, leaving Anderson as the odd man out. John Skelton conceded that Anderson wasn't much of a mentor in Arizona last season, so there's really no reason to keep him on the roster as a third QB.

Panthers signed QB Derek Anderson, formerly of the Cardinals.

One of the worst quarterbacks in football, Anderson holds a career record of 18-25 with a completion rate (52.6) that makes Rex Grossman look accurate. His TD-to-INT ratio is 53:55, although it drops to 24:36 if you throw out Anderson's fluky 2007 season. A game-costing error waiting to happen, Anderson will look to revitalize his career reuniting with new Panthers OC Rob Chudzinski. Ideally, "D.A." won't play a single snap this year.
