Panthers re-signed QB Derek Anderson to a one-year contract.

Once former Panthers OC Rob Chudzinski and the Browns declined to make overtures, Anderson was a lock to return to Carolina. He's held Cam Newton's clipboard for the last two seasons and has reportedly been a steadying influence. Newton has not missed a start in his NFL career.

Sources tell the Charlotte Observer that free agent QB Derek Anderson is expected to re-sign with the Panthers.

There was chatter that Anderson would be following Rob Chudzinski back to Cleveland, where DA somehow made a Pro Bowl in 2007. Instead, he'll stick with the Panthers as Cam Newton's backup. Anderson has reportedly "drawn praise for his attitude" in Carolina's quarterback room.

The Browns have reportedly been in contact with impending free agent Derek Anderson about re-joining Rob Chudzinski in Cleveland.

If so, it would be a violation of the league's tampering rules because free agency hasn't begun. Anderson hinted on his Facebook page that a deal was already in the works to return to Cleveland as a backup QB. "Looks like it is time to make a return to a familiar place for some unfinished business," said Anderson. "I'd be honored to return to Cleveland to play football if the fans would have me."

Panthers re-signed QB Derek Anderson to a one-year contract.

Anderson is "just excited to get back and build on the success that we had last season." Familiar with Rob Chudzinski's offense from their time together in Cleveland, Anderson will back up Cam Newton again in 2012.

Derek Anderson is listed as the Panthers' No. 2 quarterback on their latest depth chart, ahead of Jimmy Clausen.

Anderson overtook Clausen by going 11-of-19 for 192 yards and a touchdown in the exhibition finale. Clausen labored all preseason, finishing with a 52.2 completion percentage on 46 attempts, a 5.7 YPA, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Anderson is also a favorite of new Panthers OC Rob Chudzinski.

Cam Newton and Jimmy Clausen have received almost all of the Panthers' camp reps at quarterback.

Coach Ron Rivera insisted Derek Anderson would compete for the starting job, but his actions tell a different story. Newton and Clausen will continue to rotate first-teams snaps, leaving Anderson as the odd man out. John Skelton conceded that Anderson wasn't much of a mentor in Arizona last season, so there's really no reason to keep him on the roster as a third QB.

Panthers signed QB Derek Anderson, formerly of the Cardinals.

One of the worst quarterbacks in football, Anderson holds a career record of 18-25 with a completion rate (52.6) that makes Rex Grossman look accurate. His TD-to-INT ratio is 53:55, although it drops to 24:36 if you throw out Anderson's fluky 2007 season. A game-costing error waiting to happen, Anderson will look to revitalize his career reuniting with new Panthers OC Rob Chudzinski. Ideally, "D.A." won't play a single snap this year.

The Oregonian is reporting that the Panthers have signed free agent QB Derek Anderson.

GM Marty Hurney insists no offer has been made yet. If Anderson is signed, "Cam Newton's chances of starting just went way up," as Rotoworld's Chris Wesseling put it. Anderson has familiarity with new Panthers OC Rob Chudzinski, under whom "D.A." had his career year back in 2007. Anderson's confidence has been shot since a concussion-filled 2008 season, however, and his accuracy was never NFL-caliber. For the future of the Panthers, we don't like the signing one bit. A game-managing veteran would have been far more preferable, even if that kind of a player possesses no upside.

Cardinals informed QB Derek Anderson of his release.

Anderson stands as a bipedal monument to short-sightedness and a lack of scouting acumen in Arizona. A career 52.6 percent passer, a scattershot Anderson held the offense hostage early in the season before getting pulled for undrafted rookie Max Hall. Anderson was due to earn just over $4 million. He will be lucky to collect half of that in a pure backup role this year.

The Arizona Republic's Kent Somers confirms that Derek Anderson "likely won't return" to the Cardinals.

ESPN's Adam Schefter recently reported that Anderson was a candidate for release as early as this week. While Somers doesn't anticipate the move so soon, there's no way he would be asked back with a $4,087,500 salary for 2011.

Cardinals QB Derek Anderson (concussion) has been medically cleared and resumed practicing Wednesday.

Anderson might back up John Skelton on Saturday night, but won't get the start. Hall and Anderson are competing for No. 2 duties in practice this week.

Derek Anderson (concussion) still has not been medically cleared to play.

Barring something drastic, he's not going to throw another pass for the Cardinals. Coach Ken Whisenhunt has already committed to John Skelton, regardless of Anderson's condition.

Cardinals QB Derek Anderson (concussion) still hasn't been medically cleared.

The Cards may be hoping that Anderson can return to No. 2 on the depth chart for the last few games, but that's far from a lock based on his slow recovery. Due a $3.9 million salary in 2011, D.A. has probably played his last snap as a Cardinal. Some silver lining to the season for Arizona fans.

Cardinals declared QB Derek Anderson, WR Max Komar, CB A.J. Jefferson, S Hamza Abdullah, CB Marshay Green, C Ben Claxton, DT Gabe Watson, and LB Gerald Hayes inactive for Week 14.

Hayes' absence is another bit of good news for Knowshon Moreno's matchup. The Cardinals have shut their retractable roof for Sunday's game, so the Broncos and Cards will be playing indoors. Expect plenty of scoring.
