Free agent S O.J. Atogwe has announced his retirement from the NFL.
Atogwe, 32, played seven seasons, spending his first six with the Rams and his final one with the Redskins in 2011. The former third-round pick was a ball-hawking centerfield-type safety who picked off 25 passes in his career. Atogwe spent last summer with the Eagles, but was part of their final cuts. In April, his plan was to come back. He received zero interest and is hanging 'em up. Mon, Sep 9, 2013 08:01:00 PM

Free agent S O.J. Atogwe is attempting a comeback.

Atogwe never really left on his own terms. His skills simply just eroded after he left the Rams following 2010. Atogwe, 32 in June, signed a five-year, $26 million deal with the Redskins before 2011, but lasted just one season there. He spent training camp with the Eagles last year. Atogwe has 25 career interceptions.

Eagles released S O.J. Atogwe.

As usual, Atogwe was banged up for the majority of camp and barely practiced. It's a terrible sign that a team starting Kurt Coleman at safety is letting Atogwe go. Look for the Eagles to scour the waiver for safety help this weekend.

Eagles agreed to terms with S O.J. Atogwe.

Atogwe signed a five-year, $26 million deal with the Redskins in March 2011, but was released after injury limited him to 13 games and eight starts. The Sideline View's Adam Caplan expects Atogwe to slot in as the Eagles' backup free safety behind Nate Allen. Atogwe was among the league's biggest playmakers in St. Louis, but injuries have eroded his explosiveness. He'll turn 31 next week.

Free agent S O.J. Atogwe visited the Chiefs on Tuesday.

It's Atogwe's first visit in over a month, and just his second since being cut loose by the Redskins in March. Coming off an injury-plagued campaign where he was benched late in the season, Atogwe would provide veteran insurance in the Chiefs' safety corps with both Kendrick Lewis (shoulder) and Eric Berry (torn ACL) coming off surgery.

The Lions' visit with free agent S O.J. Atogwe took place on Wednesday.

Atogwe said afterward he was impressed with the visit, but left without a contract. The Jets have also shown interest in Atogwe, though they're currently tied up in Tim Tebow trade talks. Atogwe is the top safety left on the market.

The Jets have expressed interest in free agent FS O.J. Atogwe.

Atogwe looks like a fallback option after the Reggie Nelson turned down the Jets' offer Sunday night. A free safety throughout his seven-year career, Atogwe was released in a cap-related move by the Redskins last week. Turning 31 in June, Atogwe would still be an upgrade in New York on the likes of Eric Smith.

Free agent S O.J. Atogwe will reportedly visit the Lions.

Atogwe played 13 games for the Redskins last year, benched late in the season after battling hamstring, knee, and toe injuries. The Lions are set at free safety with Louis Delmas, and Amari Spievey held his own at strong safety last season.

The Vikings are reportedly "revisiting [the] potential fit" of free agent FS O.J. Atogwe.

Nearly bereft of quality safeties, the Vikes are desperate for an upgrade in the back end. One potential hang-up is that the team's brass is "not he's the same player" from his best years with the Rams. They're correct.

Redskins released FS O.J. Atogwe.

It's the first step in the Redskins regaining salary cap space after Monday's staggering blow from the league office. Atogwe was a prime candidate for release because there were no guarantees left in his $3.4 million salary for 2012. The move will count as $0 in dead money against the cap. Benched late in another injury-plagued season, Atogwe's league-wide stock has dropped precipitously over the past two years. He won't get a major contract at age 31.

The Washington Post suggests FS O.J. Atogwe as an offseason cap casualty after he was benched late in 2011.

Atogwe played behind DeJon Gomes down the stretch while battling a multitude of injuries. He's owed $4 million in 2012, including salary and bonuses. Atogwe turns 31 in June, and it's fair to wonder if his body has begun breaking down. Still showing playmaking ability despite his reduced rule, however (three INTs in 2011), we suspect Atogwe will return on a shorter leash.

Redskins FS O.J. Atogwe (knee/toe) was active only in case of emergency in Sunday's loss to the Dolphins.

Atogwe is nearing a return, but wasn't quite ready yesterday. Reed Doughty started next to LaRon Landry and racked up nine tackles.

Redskins declared FS O.J. Atogwe (knee) inactive for Sunday's game against the 49ers.

Atogwe tried to play through this knee issue last week, but he was painfully slow and proved to be a liability on the field. So now he's inactive for the second time in three weeks, leaving Reed Doughty and LaRon Landry as the starting safeties. Other Redskins inactives: RB Tashard Choice, WR Santana Moss, WR Donte Stallworth, OL Willie Smith, DL Darrion Scott and LB Markus White.

Redskins FS O.J. Atogwe (knee) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Panthers.

Give Cam Newton a little boost. Look for LaRon Landry to play some free safety and backup Reed Doughty to step in at the strong safety spot. Atogwe has 25 tackles, one sack and one interception through five games as a Redskin this season.

O.J. Atogwe revealed this week that the Vikings were one of a few teams that had "serious interest" in signing him before he chose the Redskins.

Atogwe believes God told him to sign with the Redskins. The Almighty, who often takes time out of his hectic schedule to direct action on the football field, must be especially resentful of the lockout. The Vikes' pursuit of Atogwe speaks to veteran Madieu Williams' tenuous spot on the roster.
