Following news of his "secret arrest" in February on child abuse charges, the Giants seem "very unlikely" to re-sign free agent OLB Michael Boley.
As recently as last week, Newsday's Tom Rock and Newark Star-Ledger's Jenny Vrentas were in agreement that the Giants hadn't "completely closed the door" on bringing Boley back. Boley, 32 in August, is now facing a likely suspension. May 3 - 11:05 AM

Date:

Free agent LB Michael Boley was arrested as part of a plea deal in February for felony child abuse in Alabama.

The allegations are of a physical nature -- not sexual. Per PFT, the booking information in his case notes that it is a felony for any adult to "torture, willfully abuse, cruelly beat or otherwise willfully maltreat any child under the age of 18 years" in the adult's care. The Giants say the arrest had nothing to do with Boley's release, which occurred three days prior. The eight-year veteran has attracted zero interest on the open market since getting cut. He was suspended for the first game of the 2009 season after a 2008 arrest for domestic violence charges. It's hard to see Boley finding a job now as a possible suspension looms.

Newsday's Tom Rock gets the sense the Giants "haven't completely closed the door" on re-signing free agent WLB Michael Boley.

The Newark Star-Ledger's Jenny Vrentas has the same feeling. Boley, 31 in August, was released by the Giants in a salary cap move in February, and he hasn't drawn an ounce of known interest since. He could be back at the minimum if the Giants don't come away with a linebacker in the draft.

Giants released WLB Michael Boley.

Boley's name had been mentioned as a release candidate since the season ended, but this wasn't a lock. Owed a $4.25 million salary and $250K workout bonus, Boley's release saves the Giants $3.1 million in cap space. Boley was benched for the final three games of the season in favor of Spencer Paysinger and Jacquian Williams. Prior to Week 15, he played 92 percent of the defensive snaps, but struggled against both the pass and the run. New York is aiming to get younger all around in 2013. Boley will turn 31 in August.
Feb 5 - 5:02 PM

According to ESPN New York, it "remains to be seen" what the Giants will do with WLB Michael Boley.

Due $4.25 million in 2013, Boley was benched for the final three games of the season, playing just 73 snaps after Week 14. The G-Men will surely ask Boley to slash his salary, but the soon-to-be 31-year-old veteran may be better off refusing and earning his release so he can test the open market. Either way, Boley is unlikely to enter 2013 with a starting job.
Jan 30 - 1:18 PM

Giants WLB Michael Boley has seen his playing time cut dramatically over the past two weeks.

Boley played just 49 percent of the defensive snaps in Week 15 before playing just 25 percent of the snaps last week against the Ravens. Boley has dealt with various minor injury issues this season, but head coach Tom Coughlin says "it was not necessarily a health thing." Prior to Week 15, Boley had played in 92 percent of the defensive snaps for the season. He's fallen behind Jacquian Williams and Spencer Paysinger on the outside. Boley, 30, has one year and $4.25 million left on a five-year, $25 million contract. He's a candidate for offseason restructure or release.

Giants LB Michael Boley (hamstring) expects to play Sunday despite being listed as questionable.

It's an upgrade for the Giants' pass defense, as Boley already has three interceptions this season. Antrel Rolle (knee), CB Corey Webster (hand/hamstring) and RG Chris Snee (hip) are also listed as questionable and tentatively expected to start in Week 5 against the Browns.

Giants LB Michael Boley expects to start in Sunday's game against the Buccaneers.

Boley has been dealing with a hamstring injury since the preseason. Last week, Keith Rivers started in place of Boley, but Rivers now has a hamstring issue of his own and is listed as doubtful. There's no IDP value in the Giants LBs. Last week they used six different LBs with none of them playing an every-down role. It's best to avoid this situation altogether.

Giants WLB Michael Boley (hamstring) returned to practice Saturday.

Boley missed the entire preseason, but expects to be active for Wednesday night's NFL opener. Also returning to practice were LT Will Beatty (lower back) and CB Jayron Hosley (turf toe). Prince Amukamara (high-ankle sprain) has been ruled out for Week 1 against the Cowboys.

Giants WLB Michael Boley has missed almost all of training camp due to a hamstring pull.

Boley admitted he's "very concerned" after he struggled to even run at full speed on Tuesday. IDP owners in search of linebacker depth can do better.

Michael Boley, Chase Blackburn and Mathias Kiwanuka were the Giants' starting linebackers during minicamp.

It's a versatile unit that figures to be fluid once the season opens. Boley can play the weak-side or the middle and Kiwanuka figures to shift into a pass-rushing role on third downs. The second unit at minicamp consisted of Keith Rivers, Mark Herzlich and Jacquian Williams. Rivers figures to threaten Blackburn at middle linebacker during training camp.

Giants DC Perry Fewell hinted Saturday that WLB Michael Boley may not be shifted to middle linebacker.

GM Jerry Reese has said Boley could move to the middle, but Fewell isn't sure it would work. "I don't think that's his best position," Fewell said. Fewell did allow that Boley "definitely has the ability to do that." Per Fewell, Chase Blackburn is currently penciled in at middle linebacker, and Greg Jones, Mark Herzlich and Keith Rivers will all compete for the job. Boley is probably still the favorite, but it will be a camp battle to watch for IDP players.

Giants WLB Michael Boley says he would "embrace" a move to middle linebacker.

So would Boley's IDP owners. Boley says he hasn't been approached about the switch just yet, and the Giants may wait to see what happens in the draft. For now, however, Boley is penciled in as New York's new middle linebacker. Keith Rivers should handle the weak side, with Mathias Kiwanuka at the SAM.

GM Jerry Reese said Monday that WLB Michael Boley could be shifted to middle linebacker in 2012.

The Giants appear set to let free agents Chase Blackburn and Jonathan Goff walk, while Mark Herzlich is an injury question mark and 2011 sixth-round pick Greg Jones proved unready to be a starter as a rookie. A career outside linebacker, Boley's 93 tackles last season were his most since arriving in New York in 2009. His production could skyrocket if moved to the middle.

TMZ.com reports Giants WLB Michael Boley is under investigation for "repeated willful abuse of a child under 18" in his native Gadsden, Ala.

The case is reportedly being sent to a grand jury to decide if there is enough evidence to press charges. Boley's attorney has flatly denied the accusations, saying they stem from a "contested child support case." The Giants have said they are "aware" of the situation, and that Boley will play Sunday.
