Wesley Britt - T - Patriots

Patriots downgraded T Wesley Britt (personal) and special teams ace Mel Mitchell (groin) to out for Sunday's game against the Cowboys.

Britt's absence could leave New England a little thin at tackle with Matt Light suffering from the flu. Kelley Washington will probably take some of Mitchell's special teams duties.

Patriots re-signed T Wesley Britt to a one-year contract.

The 6-8/320-pounder started one game last season. An exclusive rights free agent, he has two years before he'll enter restricted free agency.

Wesley Britt - T - Patriots

Offensive lineman Wesley Britt started his first career game at right tackle Sunday.

Britt was subbing for injured rookie RT Ryan O'Callaghan and helped New England's line turn in an excellent performance. Second-year pro Nick Kaczur, nursing an injury of his own, also spent some time at the position.

Chargers signed tackle Wesley Britt, a fifth-round pick, to a three-year contract.

The Alabama product is one of three young O-linemen drafted by San Diego in the later rounds this year.

TE	1	Rob Gronkowski Sidelined ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Rob Gronkowski's back surgery recovery is expected to take ten weeks. There are about 16 weeks left before Week 1. Profootballtalk has reported the back surgery will occur roughly 3-4 weeks following Gronkowski's Monday arm procedure, putting a tentative return timetable at 2-3 weeks before the season, assuming all healing proceeds without setbacks. At this point, we can't expect Gronkowski to participate at all in the preseason, but he still has a shot to be ready for Opening Day. The Pats open Sunday, September 8 at Buffalo. May 17
	2	Aaron Hernandez Sidelined ESPN Boston reports that "word is" Aaron Hernandez (shoulder) can expect a four-month recovery period. Hernandez underwent a "minor scope" almost three weeks ago, and he is not expected to participate in OTAs or minicamp. It's possible he could even open training camp on the PUP list. There remains plenty of time for Hernandez to be ready for Week 1. The Patriots will likely bring him along slowly. Apr 21

Thanks to the injury woes of Rob Gronkowski (arm) and Aaron Hernandez (shoulder), Ballard's rehab has taken on a different context. If he can get on the field for the offseason program, he'll be the temporary No. 1 pass-catching tight end at practices.
