Joe Berger worked as the first-team right guard during the Vikings' offseason program.
Berger has been great at center the last couple seasons, but he also has a successful history at guard while the Vikings have options at center with Nick Easton and third-rounder Pat Elflein. Berger could move back to center if neither of the young players step up, but for now he will fill the bigger need. Berger, 35, has said this will be his final NFL season. Jun 19 - 10:50 AM

Date:

Vikings C Joe Berger plans to retire after the 2017 season.

It would be yet another hit to the Vikings' line. "That’s the way I’m looking at it," Berger said. "It’s year 13 and it’s been fun. It’s a young man's game, though." Berger turned 35 in May. He was Pro Football Focus' No. 8 center last season and was No. 1 in 2015 after replacing John Sullivan.

Vikings C Joe Berger (concussion) returned to a limited practice on Wednesday.

Berger was hoping to suit up last week against Jacksonville but couldn't pass his final concussion test. He should have a better chance of playing this week against the Colts. Nick Easton has been spelling him at center.

Vikings C Joe Berger remains in the concussion protocol.

Previous reports suggested Berger was cleared of his concussion earlier this week, but obviously that wasn't the case. He sat out Friday's practice and is looking doubtful for Sunday's game at Jacksonville. Nick Easton will likely draw another start at center.

Updating a previous item, Vikings C Joe Berger (concussion) did not practice Friday.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press' Chris Tomasson reported Berger has completed the concussion protocol, but this missed practice suggests he may still have a few hurdles to clear. Berger's status for Week 14 is completely up in the air.

He returned to practice Tuesday and should be good to go this weekend against the Jaguars. Berger's return is a positive development for an offensive line which needs one.

Vikings signed C Joe Berger to a one-year contract extension through 2017.

Vikings re-signed G/C Joe Berger.

33-year-old Berger made nine starts at right guard last year, playing in place of injured Brandon Fusco. Fusco will be back, so Berger may return to compete to start at left guard. The Vikings would ideally bring back Berger as a swing lineman, however. His best asset is his center-guard versatility.

The Vikings are unlikely to re-sign free agent RG Joe Berger.

Berger would need to accept a team-friendly deal to remain in Minnesota. He's coming off a career year in 2014, making nine starts and grading out positively in run blocking. Berger is Rotoworld's No. 18 free-agent interior lineman.
