Former Patriots G Dan Connolly has decided to retire.
A UDFA out of Southeast Missouri State, Connolly was signed to the Patriots' practice squad in 2007 and was with the franchise ever since. He started 82 games (including playoffs), going to two Super Bowls and serving as a captain on last year's title-winning squad. Connolly is just 32 and had interest from some NFL clubs, but is looking out for his long-term health and his three daughters under six years old. He suffered four documented concussions in the NFL and one more in high school. Jul 16 - 8:58 AM

ESPN Patriots reporter Mike Reiss believes free agent G Dan Connolly could call it a career.

After spending seven seasons with New England, Connolly reportedly turned down a strong offer from the Bucs because he did not want to uproot his family. That leaves the Patriots or retirement as Connolly's only options. New England has yet to show interest, but that could change if injuries strike in camp.

The Patriots haven’t shown any interest in re-signing free agent OG Dan Connolly.

The Patriots could use a veteran at left guard, but are moving forward with rookies Tre Jackson and Shaq Mason. Connolly hasn’t had free-agent interest since visiting the Bucs in April.

Free agent OG Dan Connolly left his visit with the Bucs without a contract.

The Bucs are Connolly's only visit to this point. He's coming off a down 2014, grading out as a bottom-seven guard by PFF. Connolly should settle for a depth role wherever he lands.

The Bucs will host free agent OG Dan Connolly on Tuesday.

Connolly was part of the problem on New England's interior line last year, and wouldn't solve the Bucs' guard woes. He should only be viewed as depth.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Patriots remain interested in re-signing free agent G/C Dan Connolly, but that the Seahawks, Bucs, Bears and Dolphins are all interested.

With the Patriots since 2008, Connolly is coming off a rough season. Connolly has mostly played guard the past few years, but has extensive experience at center. Rapsheet reports the Bears and Seahawks are both eyeing Connolly as a center.

CSN New England's Tom Curran believes re-signing free agent G Dan Connolly is a priority for the Patriots.

Connolly was a liability last season, but he is a veteran leader that could be useful in a backup role. Entering his age-33 season and with a long injury history, Connolly could also opt to retire. One of Connolly's main calling cards is his ability to play multiple positions on the interior line.

The Boston Globe reports Patriots RG Dan Connolly's roster spot is in serious jeopardy.

Connolly is owed a $3 million salary in the final year of his deal. New England is reportedly high on second-year UDFA Josh Kline, who worked with the first-team offense in place of LG Logan Mankins for much of offseason workouts. Talented power blocker Marcus Cannon is also in the mix at right guard.

Patriots RG Dan Connolly (concussion) resumed practicing Thursday.

It puts Connolly on track to play one week after sustaining his injury. Versatile sub Marcus Cannon will fill in if Connolly can't get cleared.

Patriots RG Dan Connolly is recovering from surgery on his right shoulder, but is expected to be ready for training camp.

The operation took place last week. Connolly, 30, started 16 of New England's 18 games last season, including the playoffs. Pro Football Focus graded him slightly negatively as both a run and pass blocker. At his best as a utility, swing-type offensive lineman, Connolly may face competition to start in 2013.

Patriots RG Dan Connolly aggravated his back injury in Sunday's Week 13 win over the Dolphins.

Connolly was only able to make it through the first two series before getting replaced by Nick McDonald. It's the same issue that knocked him out of the Week 10 win over the Bills.

According to the Boston Globe, the Patriots' starting center job is "Dan Connolly's to lose".

This comes despite New England re-signing Dan Koppen to a two-year deal on Friday. The 32-year old Koppen was widely expected to step back into the starting job after missing all but one game in 2011 due to a broken ankle. The Globe, however, notes a slip in play after a poor training camp back in 2010. Koppen is ticketed for the No. 2 job.

Patriots re-signed C Dan Connolly.

The Patriots had been working to bring Connolly back before the start of free agency, and he'll return as the team's starting center. The move likely signals the end of Dan Koppen's time in New England. Connolly missed three games with a groin injury last season, but has made 24 starts between guard and tackle the past two years. He's flashed highly ordinary talent to date, but it's possible he could take a step forward in 2012 as he settles in at center.
