Free agent S Jim Leonhard said the 2014 season will be his last in the NFL.
Leonhard, 31, appeared in all 16 games for the Bills last season, starting seven. He registered 41 tackles and career-highs in passes defensed (six) and interceptions (four). Leonhard has a history with Rex Ryan and Browns coach Mike Pettine and could look to land a reserve/special teams role with either team. Feb 25 - 3:02 PM

Bills FS Jim Leonhard practiced with the first-team defense Wednesday.

Leonhard was just signed on Monday and is already listed ahead of rookies Jonathan Meeks and Duke Williams. If Jairus Byrd (foot) is ruled out for Week 1, Leonhard will draw the start. The Bills only other option would be moving Aaron Williams to free safety.

Bills signed S Jim Leonhard, formerly of the Saints.

It's an indication FS Jairus Byrd (plantar fasciitis) may not be ready for Week 1. Leonhard was part of the Saints' final cuts. The 30-year-old is familiar with Jets DC Mike Pettine's system after playing for him with the Jets.

Saints waived or released S Jim Leonhard, WR Preston Parker, FB Austin Johnson, WR Saalim Hakim, OG Elliott Mealer, TE Keavon Milton, TE Michael Higgins, OG Andrew Tiller, C Jeremiah Warren, LB Ray Shipman, LB Rufus Johnson, S Jerico Nelson, LB Baraka Atkins, OT Marcel Jones, CB Korey Lindsey and CB Jumal Rolle.

The fact that Leonhard couldn't crack a secondary that was one of the worst of all time last season bodes poorly for his future. Hakim has speed to burn, but didn't step up in Joe Morgan's absence. Parker hasn't caught a pass since 2011. Tiller was a sixth-round pick in April, as was Johnson.

Saints signed S Jim Leonhard to a one-year contract.

Leonhard, 30, recorded 18 tackles and two interceptions in 16 appearances with Denver last season, making one start. He'll add veteran insurance to a Saints team desperately trying to improve on last season's disastrous defense. Leonhard brings knowledge of Rob Ryan's scheme after playing three years under his brother, Rex. Leonhard will likely compete for third safety duties behind Roman Harper and Malcolm Jenkins.

WGR 550 Buffalo suggests that the Bills could have interest in free agent SS Jim Leonhard.

Leonhard has experience in DC Mike Pettine's system and could provide veteran insurance for Da'Norris Searcy. The Bills could also consider moving Aaron Williams to safety in 2013 after he was overmatched at cornerback last season.

Broncos activated S Jim Leonhard (knee) from the active/PUP list.

Leonhard resumed practicing Tuesday, eight months removed from surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon. If he shows enough over the next two weeks to keep a roster spot, Leonhard will provide veteran insurance for young safeties Quinton Carter and Rahim Moore.

Broncos agreed to terms with S Jim Leonhard, formerly of the Jets, on a one-year deal.

The Broncos must have been encouraged by the progress of Leonhard's surgically repaired knee, as they signed him immediately after his workout. Leonhard also tried out for the Bills, who claimed on their website he was still "3-4 weeks away" from full clearance. Leonhard was in the midst of another productive year for the Jets last season before tearing his patellar tendon in Week 14. Provided he can get healthy, Leonhard could see heavy snaps in Denver's young safety corps.

Free agent S Jim Leonhard has scheduled a workout for the Broncos.

Leonhard recently tried out for the Bills, and an item on their website stated he's still "3-4 weeks away" from contributing after last year's patellar tendon tear. The Broncos may just be doing due diligence on the versatile safety.

Free agent S Jim Leonhard visited with the Bills on Thursday.

The Bills have been looking for an experienced fourth safety to complement young backup Da'Norris Searcy. No signing is imminent, however. Coming off a right patella tendon tear, Leonhard may have trouble passing a physical.

The Jets will not be re-signing free agent S Jim Leonhard before training camp.

Leonhard, coming off a right patella tendon tear, recently declared himself healthy enough to work out for teams. League sources tell Jets beat writer Rich Cimini that Leonhard won't be resurfacing with New York, though. The 29-year-old Leonhard could make sense for a team like the Colts or Cowboys. He knows the basic terminology of both of those defenses.

Free agent S Jim Leonhard says his knee is feeling "great."

Leonhard tore his right patellar tendon in Week 14 last season. He says he's healthy now and ready to work out for teams. "I am getting antsy, football is right around the corner and I don't have a team," said Leonhard. Look for the 29-year-old to catch on as a third safety at some point before the season.

Free agent S Jim Leonhard (knee surgery) says there's "no doubt" he'll be ready for training camp, and that he's drawn interest from "multiple teams" in free agency.

Leonhard also says he's had "good conversations" with the Jets, but that he's not yet ready to work out for teams. Leonhard is recovering from a serious injury in a torn patellar tendon, but would have a good chance of avoiding the PUP list if he's indeed 100 percent for the start of camp. If he re-signs with New York, he'd provide insurance for LaRon Landry and Eric Smith.

GM Mike Tannenbaum says the Jets haven't "shut the door" on re-signing free agent S Jim Leonhard.

Re-signing Leonhard hasn't been a priority for the Jets, but they still need a free safety. Whether or not Gang Green gets serious about bringing Leonhard back will depend on how he fares in his recovery from the torn right patellar tendon that ended his 2011. He could be sidelined well into the summer. The Jets aren't done making moves at safety following the signing of LaRon Landry.

ESPN New York's Rich Cimini expects a "shake-up at the safety position" for the Jets this offseason.

Cimini believes re-signing free safeties Jim Leonhard and Brodney Pool will be a low priority in free agency. Leonhard tore his right patellar tendon in December, and could be a candidate to begin 2012 on the PUP list.
