The St. Louis Post-Dispatch believes Rams SS James Butler has agreed to restructure his contract, which called for $3 million this season and $3.5 million in 2012.
He's lost his starting job to Quintin Mikell. Butler was a candidate for release, but was at the Rams' Saturday morning walk-through. It's a pretty good sign he's agreed to a pay-cut, and will be ready to practice when veterans who have signed new deals are allowed to resume practicing in training camp. Rams SS James Butler did not suffer a high ankle sprain as originally feared.

A high ankle sprain would have knocked him out multiple games, but since it's lower on his ankle, he could play in Week 10 after the team's Week 9 bye.

Rams SS James Butler is believed to have suffered a high ankle sprain in the team's Week 8 win.

Butler has been banged up all season, so it's surprising that he's appeared in all eight of the Rams' games. He's likely to miss the next 4-6 weeks. St. Louis just signed Michael Lewis and could consider placing Butler on I.R.

Rams SS James Butler suffered a sprained MCL in his left knee during Sunday's loss to the Bucs.

Butler will likely be out several weeks. Craig Dahl will slide into the starting lineup and is a capable backup.

Rams SS James Butler exited in the second quarter Sunday with a knee injury and is questionable to return.

It's not clear if Butler aggravated the sprained MCL that caused him to miss most of training camp. Craig Dahl has entered in Butler's place and isn't an obvious downgrade.

Rams SS James Butler has resumed practicing in team drills after missing nearly all of training camp with a sprained MCL.

Butler is working with the scout team, indicating he's not projected for a big role to open the year. Craig Dahl will stand in as the No. 1 strong safety.

Rams SS James Butler's knee injury has been diagnosed as a sprained medial collateral ligament.

The injury is considered more than just day to day. Said head coach Steve Spagnuolo, "It’s going to keep (Butler) out a little while. I don’t want to classify it as significant. We’ll take it day to day, but I think it’ll be an extended injury." Craig Dahl has taken Butler's place on the practice field, and has a legitimate chance to open the season with it.

Rams S James Butler (knee) is expected to miss extended time.

This comes from coach Steve Spagnuolo, though little else is known about the injury at this time. We'll bring you more when things clear up.

Rams SS James Butler (knee) is expected to return for Sunday's game against the Colts.

Butler missed three games after suffering a sprained MCL in Week 3. With cornerback Ron Bartell also returning, the Rams secondary should be at full strength against Peyton Manning and the Colts.

Rams SS James Butler (knee) is listed as doubtful for Week 6.

St. Louis' defense will be leaky up the middle with Butler out and DT Gary Gibson done for the year. Upgrade Maurice Jones-Drew's fantasy matchup.

Rams SS James Butler is out 2-4 weeks with a third-degree MCL sprain.

Butler piled up 12 stops and picked off a pass in the Rams' first two games, but was a liability in coverage. Anthony Smith is an option to replace him.

Rams' SS James Butler left Sunday's game against the Packers in the first quarter with an apparent left knee injury.

If this is a week-to-week injury the Rams could activate, former Packer and Steeler safety, Anthony Smith. Butler was replaced by third-year man Craig Dahl.

Rams agreed to terms with SS James Butler on a four-year, $14 million contract. Another $3 million is available through incentives.

Butler emerged as a starter for the Giants in 2007. The former undrafted free agent is an imposing specimen at 6'3/215, knows Steve Spagnuolo's system, and is a force against the run. He's not great in coverage, however, and that could be exposed because of St. Louis' pass rush. Butler, 26, is an upgrade over Corey Chavous, but that's not saying much.

FOX 31 in Denver reports that free agent S James Butler has agreed to a four-year, $14 million contract with the Rams.

Butler can reportedly earn another $3 million via incentives. The Niners gave Butler a brief look, but otherwise St. Louis was the only team known to be in pursuit. He'll be a surefire starter there after Corey Chavous' release.

The Rams are reportedly offering free agent S James Butler "significantly less" than what Yeremiah Bell and Gibril Wilson got from Miami.

St. Louis smartly isn't willing to overpay the former undrafted free agent. Wilson and Bell's deals average about $5 million annually. No other teams have strongly jumped into the Butler bidding, so the Rams may still land him.
