New Bucs P Michael Koenen's six-year deal is worth $19.5 million, including $6.5 million guaranteed.
We don't normally do separate posts for special teams contracts, but this is like spending a ninth-round fantasy pick on your kicker. It just doesn't make a lot of sense, especially when Koenen finished 28th in the league in net punting average last season. Fri, Jul 29, 2011 09:05:00 AM

Bucs agreed to terms with P Michael Koenen on a six-year contract.

Atlanta franchise tagged Koenen in each of the last two years, but they weren't going to pay him another $3 million for 2011. Especially not after Koenen finished 28th in the league in net punting average. Koenen has plenty of talent, but the Bucs may have to make some tweaks to ensure this commitment is worthwhile.

Falcons re-signed restricted free agent P Michael Koenen to a one-year, $2.731 million contract.

The salary constitutes 110% of his 2009 base pay, which was required after Atlanta franchise tagged him two winters ago. Koenen, 28 in July, is one of the strongest-legged punters in the game, in addition to being a super kickoff specialist. He'll be a candidate for a long-term deal this summer.

The Falcons have extended a second-round tender to restricted free agent P Michael Koenen.

Koenen was Atlanta's franchise player a year ago, collecting $2.483 million, so he'll be pricey to keep. The Falcons are forced to give him a 10% raise.

Falcons P Michael Koenen left Sunday's game with a concussion.

Koenen may have been concussed while attempting a tackle just before the end of the first half. Placekicker Matt Bryant punted early in the third quarter, so Koenen's day is likely done.

Falcons signed P Michael Koenen, their franchise player, to a one-year, $2.483 million contract.

Though Koenen was below average in many stat categories, his directional punting and hang time keyed an NFL record-low 49 punt return yards during the 2008 season. Koenen is highly talented with a big leg and his relatively low net was fluky because Atlanta often was in excellent field position.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution confirms an NFL.com report that the Falcons will place the franchise tag on P Michael Koenen.

It's a slightly surprising decision because Koenen was below average in many statistics (gross average, net average, and touchbacks). But he's versatile and the Falcons don't have any better free agents.

NFL.com's Adam Schefter reports that the Falcons will place the franchise tag on P Michael Koenen.

The franchise number for punters is $2.483 million. Atlanta's only other consideration for the tag might have been LB Michael Boley, but Boley fell out of favor under the new coaching staff last year. Koenen has a strong leg, kicks off, and can fill in at placekicker on long field goals in a pinch.

The Falcons extended a second-round tender to restricted free agent P Michael Koenen.

Just tying up some loose ends. Koenen is no longer considered a viable placekicking option, but has a huge leg for punting. He was undrafted, so he likely would've been long gone without a high tender.

Falcons re-signed exclusive rights free agents Michael Koenen, a punter, Corey McIntyre, a fullback, and Ben Claxton, a guard/center.

All three got one-year deals. Koenen has a huge leg and is one of the NFL's better punters when he's not trying to hit 60-yard field goals.

Coach Jim Mora said Monday that the Falcons are "reviewing options" after K Michael Koenen went 0-for-4 Sunday.

"There is obvious concern with the kicking game, with the field goal kicking game," Mora said. "That is something that we are evaluating. We have not made any decisions one way or another. I think he's a good kicker. I'm going to stand by that. Some people might not think that's the right thing to do, but I just think that this kid has something to him."

The Falcons will reportedly try to figure out K Michael Koenen's problems before signing another kicker like Todd Peterson.

Would they make this decision if Koenen's amazing 0-for-4 day cost them a division game? The home crowd booed him off the field in a blowout win. This is very surprising if true, but fantasy leaguers shouldn't stay as patient.

Falcons K Michael Koenen was 0-for-4 in field goal attempts in Week 2, with no attempts over 40 yards. Two of the field goals were blocked.

Well that story was fun while it lasted. Look for the Falcons to bring in another kicker this week. Koenen should remain the team's punter.

Michael Koenen will be the Falcons' placekicker in 2006.

He will also be their punter. Koenen has a big leg so he could be a nice pickup against a weaker team, preferably at home in the dome.

Falcons P/K Michael Koenen connected on a 51-yard field goal Saturday.

Because he can rock long field goals and plays indoors, Koenen could be a decent bye-week pickup with the right matchup if he's the Falcons' starting placekicker this season. Tony Yelk got hurt in the game.
