Seahawks signed LB Heath Farwell, formerly of the Vikings.

Farwell, 29, was once one of the top special teamers in football, but he hasn't been the same in recent seasons due to injuries. In Seattle, Farwell will cover kickoffs and punts and step in as the team's No. 5 or 6 linebacker.

Vikings re-signed LB Heath Farwell to a three-year, $7.75 million contract with $3.25 million in guarantees.

Farwell took to the open market searching for a team willing to let him play defense, but nothing surfaced after feelers in Cleveland and New England. He figures to return in the same special teams/backup linebacker role in which he's played in the past. Farwell says his knee is 100 percent after tearing his ACL last August.

Farwell, who's drawn interest from the Browns and Patriots, is looking for a team willing to let him play defense. None of the above are great fits.

Farwell, a pure special teamer, was in New England Tuesday. Eric Mangini doesn't feel comfortable doing much if Bill Belichick hasn't done it first.

Farwell, who missed all of last season with a torn ACL, could replace free agent Larry Izzo for the Pats. Farwell wouldn't play defense in New England.

Vikings LB Heath Farwell tore his ACL in Saturday's first preseason game and will miss the 2008 season. He'll be placed on injured reserve.

Rufus Alexander will need to step up. Farwell, the Vikings' best special teamer, needed this season because he's in a contract year and wanted to prove himself worthy of a starting job for 2009. The injury stalls his career, but he'll still get his $1.417 million salary.

The special teams standout will have an MRI Saturday, but it didn't look good. The team believes he tore the ACL in his right knee and will miss the season.

A huge upgrade for Farwell, who made $435,000 in 2007. He isn't starting caliber, but is one of the league's most relentless special teamers. Farwell could replace Dontarrious Thomas as the Vikes' fourth 'backer this year.
