Vikings SLB Chad Greenway will be in attendance when minicamp begins on Tuesday.
Greenway missed a handful of OTA sessions to be with his ailing father in South Dakota, but is expected to arrive in Winter Park tomorrow. The Vikings signed Greenway to a five-year, $41 million extension last September. Mon, Jun 18, 2012 06:41:00 PM

Vikings signed SLB Chad Greenway to a new five-year, $41 million contract including $20 million guaranteed.

Greenway was previously under contract through 2011 on a $10.091 million franchise tender. Though he's yet to make a Pro Bowl, the 28-year-old is one of the stoutest and best all-around 4-3 linebackers in football. Pro Football Focus graded Greenway as the fifth best player in the league at the position last season. Also an IDP stud, he's averaging 116 tackles a year over the past four seasons. The Vikings confirmed their high opinion of Greenway by franchising him over both Sidney Rice and Ray Edwards during the winter.

Vikings beat writer Judd Zulgad suggests SLB Chad Greenway is more likely than RB Adrian Peterson to be signed to a long-term deal before the season.

That's not to say that Peterson won't get extended, just that Greenway - a player who was reportedly interested in discussing a deal as of last month - is more likely to get his done first. Greenway is set to make $10.091 million in 2011 as the Vikings' franchise player. Peterson will bring home $10.72 million in 2011 and will hit free agency after the season if he can't work out a new contract.

Vikings.com's Mike Wobschall reports that the Vikings and SLB Chad Greenway remain interested in working out a long-term deal.

The Vikings' franchise player this season, Greenway is set to make $10.091 million. Greenway's 145 tackles were fourth in the NFL in 2010, and if he's similarly productive in 2011, he's a good bet to be locked up by Minnesota with a long-term deal.

Vikings signed franchise player SLB Chad Greenway to a one-year, $10.091 million tender.

Greenway made it clear that he was fine with the tag and would like to sign long-term in the Twin Cities. As long as franchise tags hold up under the next CBA, the Vikes' leading tackler for three seasons running will earn $7 million more this year than last. The decision to tag Greenway was a questionable one, allowing Sidney Rice to hit the market as arguably the top receiver available.

Vikings SLB Chad Greenway expressed no disappointment with his franchise tag Monday.

"I’m happy to know that the Vikings value me enough to make this move," he said. "My family and I love ... the Twin Cities and I want to be a part of the Vikings for years to come." It's for reasons mentioned by Greenway that we don't believe tagging him was necessarily in the team's best interest. He sounds open to a hometown discount, whereas Sidney Rice is set to break the bank.

Vikings named LB Chad Greenway their franchise player.

Greenway, a highly athletic three-down defender, led the Vikings with 149 tackles last season. They simply couldn't risk losing one of the best 4-3 outside linebackers in the game. The tag should net Greenway more than $10 million on a one-year contract if the two sides don't reach a long-term agreement. This means that the Vikings are now exposing themselves to the possibility of losing fellow free agents Sidney Rice and Ray Edwards.

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune's Sid Hartman, the Vikings plan to use the franchise tag on free agent SLB Chad Greenway.

Just keep in mind that Hartman is a columnist, not really a reporter. If Greenway is tagged, the Vikings would risk losing fellow free agent Sidney Rice. Greenway, 28, has been the Vikes' leading tackler three seasons running.

Free agent SLB Chad Greenway is expected to be "at the top of the list" of priorities for the Vikings this offseason.

Greenway led the Vikes with 149 tackles while playing 96.9 percent of the defensive snaps. As one of the league's top 4-3 outside linebackers, Greenway will draw plenty of interest on the open market.

Vikings SLB Chad Greenway says his recent absence from Minnesota's three-day minicamp was not contract related.

"There's nothing related at all," he said. "There is no contract issue at all. Coach [Brad] Childress gave me some time off for the minicamp, and that's really all that matters." It sounds like Greenway's absence was excused.

Chad Greenway was tight-lipped Thursday when asked why he sat out the Vikes' three-day minicamp last weekend.

"Coach [Brad Childress] and I had a little agreement and that's all I can say about that," Greenway said. "You'll have to ask the head guy about that one." Greenway did say that there was nothing "controversial" about the situation, and his absence was neither injury not contract related.

Chad Greenway started Sunday's opener at strong-side linebacker, with Ben Leber on the weak side.

Greenway had four tackles (all solo), while Leber had six (five solo). MLB E.J. Henderson led Minnesota with eight (seven solo) and had a sack. Greenway's position is usually IDP-unfriendly, but he's overcome in the past. Still, Henderson's return after a lost 2008 may cut into Greenway's numbers.

Vikings LB Chad Greenway lost eight pounds last week after a bout with the flu.

Greenway better be fully recovered by Sunday because he's due to shadow Brian Westbrook all over the field.

The Vikings have been using Chad Greenway at strong-side linebacker. Ben Leber is now lining up on the weak side.

The switch hasn't hurt Greenway in the box score yet -- he has 23 tackles (18 solo) to Leber's six (five solo) -- but could over the course of the season. In the Vikings' Tampa 2 system, strong-side 'backers tend to make significantly fewer stops. It does help that Greenway is a terrific player.

The Vikings have re-inserted WLB Chad Greenway into their nickel package.

SLB Ben Leber will likely come off on passing downs. Greenway isn't wearing the defensive headset (MLB E.J. Henderson is), but could be the second option to do so if Henderson gets hurt. Greenway is an every-down player.
