Vikings WLB Chad Greenway is not guaranteed a starting job.
Greenway re-signed with Minnesota for what will likely be his final season, but he will face competition from Emmanuel Lamur. "You don't go into your 11th season without somebody trying to take your job. Emmanuel is a great player," Greenway said. "Regardless of how things shake out -- and I'll say this until Game 1 -- we're all going to have our own roles, and the roles are all going to be pushed toward helping our team win football games." An important leader with waning skills, Greenway's snaps should be dramatically reduced this season. Apr 19 - 11:00 AM

Vikings re-signed WLB Chad Greenway.

The sides had been working toward a reunion all offseason. 2016 is expected to be Greenway's final season. Greenway's on-field effectiveness has really waned, but he's an important leader as the Vikings' longest-tenured player. Greenway will probably be on the field for 30-40 percent of the snaps in 2016.
Mar 31 - 5:30 PM

FOX Sports' Alex Marvez reports a new deal between the Vikings and free agent LB Chad Greenway is "imminent."

#AsExpected. Both sides have sounded optimistic about a reunion all offseason, and this deal was always going to get done. Greenway has been with the Vikings since they made him the No. 17 overall pick in 2006.

Vikings GM Rick Spielman confirmed the team is still talking to free agent WLB Chad Greenway.

Spielman also said the team remains in talks with free agent CB Terence Newman. Minnesota's moves over the last two offseasons -- drafting CB Trae Waynes in the first round last year and signing WLB Emmanuel Lamur in free agency -- suggest both veterans would be returning to smaller roles if they decide to re-sign. Still, it would be surprising if Greenway and Newman are not with the Vikings when training camp opens.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer expects impending free agent WLB Chad Greenway back in 2016.

Greenway wants to return to Minnesota, and Vikings GM Rick Spielman has expressed optimism something will get done. Greenway has said this season will likely be his last. A Viking since 2006, it would be surprising if he played anywhere else in his final year.
Feb 25 - 10:48 AM

Impending free agent WLB Chad Greenway said next season will likely be his last if he re-signs with the Vikings.

"I think with the stadium opening and kind of being able to be a part of that, I think if I was able to come back and play, I’d announce that this is going to be it -- just kind of treat it that way," Greenway said. Vikings GM Rick Spielman has expressed optimism the team will be able to re-sign Greenway, who Minnesota selected in the first round all the way back in 2006. It will be surprising if the two sides do not work something out.

Feb 22 - 9:59 AM

Vikings GM Rick Spielman has projected optimism about re-signing free agent WLB Chad Greenway.

"I had a very good conversation with Chad after the season," Spielman said. "We’ll have a few more conversations with his agent." Greenway, who has been with the Vikings since 2006, has said he wants to play one more season. The sides should work something out before the start of free agency on March 9.

Feb 18 - 4:39 PM

ESPN Vikings reporter Ben Goessling expects impending free agent WLB Chad Greenway back with Minnesota next season.

Greenway has already said he will play another season, and it would be shocking if he did not finish his career with the Vikings, who drafted him in the first round in 2006. Traditionally a three-down player, Greenway accepted a smaller role in 2015 and will likely need to accept a smaller salary to stick around in Minnesota. A one-year deal worth around $2.5 million could work for both sides.

The Star Tribune's Matt Vensel does not believe impending free agent WLB Chad Greenway will be back with the Vikings in 2016.

Greenway has already said he plans to play another season, and it would be shocking if it were anywhere other than Minnesota. Greenway has been with the Vikings since they made him the No. 17 overall pick of the 2006 draft, playing 140 games along the way. Even if he is not a starter, Greenway would offer veteran leadership in the locker room. The two sides should work something out.
Jan 18 - 11:14 AM

Free agent WLB Chad Greenway said he plans to play one more season.

"It can't end like this," said Greenway following Sunday's Wild Card loss to the Seahawks. Greenway's effectiveness has dipped sharply in recent years, but the 33-year-old has leadership value. The Vikings would probably take him back for one more season, albeit not necessarily as a surefire starter.
Jan 10 - 5:31 PM

Chad Greenway is expected to remain the Vikings' starting weakside linebacker.

Greenway got all of the work with the Vikings' first-team defense during the offseason program, and coach Mike Zimmer called him the best WLB on the roster. Greenway's play last season does not support Zimmer's claim. He struggled both against the pass and the run in 12 starts and was outplayed by the younger and more athletic Gerald Hodges. If given anything resembling a fair shot, Hodges could easily unseat Greenway.

Vikings WLB Chad Greenway agreed to cut his 2015 base salary from $7 million to $3.4 million.

The move created $3.225 million in cap room for the Vikings. Coming off a terrible 2014, Greenway was likely faced with either taking a pay cut or getting his walking papers. Greenway will be an unrestricted free agent after this season.

Vikings WLB Chad Greenway said the knee injury he sustained in Week 16 was to his MCL.

Greenway admitted to hearing a pop, so it's a good thing there was no ACL damage. He should be fine for OTAs. Before then, Greenway knows he has to take a big paycut after an embarrassingly poor 2014 campaign. He's due $8.8M in salary and bonuses.

Vikings WLB Chad Greenway is open to restructuring his contract.

Greenway was one of the worst starting linebackers in the league this past year. He's due $8.8 million in salary and bonuses and will need to take a massive pay cut to return. The Vikings can save $7.1 million by releasing Greenway.

Vikings WLB Chad Greenway (questionable, knee) missed practice all week and is expected to miss Week 17 against the Bears.

Minnesota will also be without SLB Anthony Barr (knee) and reserve LB Brandon Watts. Incredibly banged up at linebacker, the Vikings make for an intriguing target for fantasy owners wanting to start Martellus Bennett in Week 17.
