Chargers QB Charlie Whitehurst (strained MCL) has resumed participating in individual drills, but will be inactive for Thursday's preseason opener.
It shouldn't be long before Philip Rivers' backup is back in team drills. As long as Whitehurst is healthy by the third preseason game, Kevin O'Connell won't be a threat to his job. Tue, Aug 7, 2012 11:15:00 AM

Chargers QB Charlie Whitehurst is expected to miss "a couple weeks" after straining his left MCL in Thursday's training camp practice.

Coach Norv Turner's timetable does confirm Whitehurst doesn't have a ligament tear. With only Philip Rivers and UDFA Jarrett Lee left healthy at quarterback, the Chargers are going to sign another one. Free agent Billy Volek has reportedly balked so far because he's not on board with being a "camp arm."

Charlie Whitehurst sustained a left knee injury Thursday, leading the Chargers to put feelers out for possible replacements at quarterback.

There's no sign that Whitehurst's injury is serious, but the Chargers were concerned enough to get on the phone. The Union-Tribune suggests Billy Volek as a logical candidate. Volek spent the past five seasons as a backup to Philip Rivers.

Chargers signed QB Charlie Whitehurst to a two-year contract.

Whitehurst has gone from Chargers third-stringer to Seahawks future starter back to Chargers reserve in the span of just over two years. Owner of a career 54.2 completion percentage on 155 pass attempts, Whitehurst simply isn't accurate or aggressive enough to be more than a low-end backup. On the bright side, he knows Norv Turner's system. Whitehurst will replace Billy Volek as the Chargers' No. 2 quarterback behind Philip Rivers.

The Tacoma News Tribune does not expect the Seahawks to re-sign impending free agent Charlie Whitehurst.

"Check-down Charlie" attempted just 56 passes in 2011. He was so ineffective in his second of two starts that Whitehurst was pulled after only seven throws in favor of Tarvaris Jackson, who was dealing with a debilitating pectoral injury. Whitehurst should draw interest as a low-end backup on the open market.

Charlie Whitehurst started Sunday's game against the Bengals.

Pregame reports had Tarvaris Jackson starting, but it looks like his pectoral wasn't quite strong enough. Jackson is available in case of injury or ineffectiveness out of Whitehurst. The Seahawks are going to struggle to move the ball regardless of who is under center.

Coach Pete Carroll confirmed Friday that the Seahawks are preparing Charlie Whitehurst to start against the Bengals in Week 8.

Carroll referred to the game as "Charlie's first time in his career able to start two games in a row." While Seattle's quarterback situation is officially being left up to a "game-day decision," most signs point to Whitehurst getting the nod over Tarvaris Jackson (pectoral). Neither has played well consistently this season, and Cincinnati is ranked fifth against the pass.

Charlie Whitehurst completed 12-of-30 passes for just 97 yards with no touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's loss to the Browns.

A brutal performance in a big opportunity for Whitehurst. It's clear he's not an NFL-level starting quarterback, showing happy feet in the pocket and missing receivers high often. Tarvaris Jackson (pectoral) will get his starting job back as soon as he's ready.

Coach Pete Carroll acknowledged Friday that Charlie Whitehurst will start against the Browns this week.

Carroll hasn't ruled out Tarvaris Jackson (pectoral), but it sounds like he'd only be active in a backup role if he suits up. Whitehurst has taken all of the first-team reps this week, so it's no surprise that he's getting the call. It's an upgrade for rookie slot receiver Doug Baldwin, who was Whitehurst's favorite target in relief two weeks ago. Rotoworld ranks Whitehurst 26th among fantasy QBs for Week 7.

Eric D. Williams of the Tacoma News Tribune considers Charlie Whitehurst "likely" to start at quarterback for the Seahawks in Week 7.

"Carroll’s hopeful that Tarvaris will get some reps maybe on Thursday or Friday, but I think it’s likely that they’re probably gonna go with Whitehurst as the starter," Williams told the Akron Beacon-Journal as the Browns gear up to host the Seahawks. Charlie "Check-Down" Whitehurst could help the cause of slot receiver Doug Baldwin, but is poor QB2 bet in fantasy leagues.

Coach Pete Carroll said he is in the process of getting Charlie Whitehurst ready to play.

Tarvaris Jackson (pectoral) hasn't been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Browns, but he looks like a long shot. Whitehurst played well in a relief role during Week 5, completing 11-of-19 passes for 149 yards with a touchdown in less than one half of work against the Giants. He'd be on the low-end QB2 radar with Cleveland expected to be without top corner Joe Haden (knee) again.

The Everett Herald doesn't expect a quarterback controversy to ensue in Seattle after Charlie Whitehurst's solid Week 5 effort off the bench.

Whitehurst did well to manage the game, avoiding turnovers and "leading" his team to a win. Early indications are that Tarvaris Jackson's pectoral injury is just a strain, however, and he figures to regain his starting job after the Week 6 bye. Whitehurst finished Week 5 with 11-of-19 completions for 149 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions against the Giants.

In relief of Tarvaris Jackson (shoulder), Charlie Whitehurst completed 11-of-19 passes for 149 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's win over the Giants.

The Seahawks didn't miss a beat when Whitehurst came on in the third quarter. They still ran a hurry-up offense and Whitehurst ended up leading a game-winning touchdown drive deep in the fourth quarter. The extent of Jackson's shoulder injury is unknown, but he'll have the bye week to heal up. As long as Jackson didn't suffer a separation, Whitehurst will return to a reserve role.

Coach Pete Carroll praised Charlie Whitehurst's learning curve this week in Darrell Bevell's West Coast offense.

"Charlie's functioning beautifully," Carroll said. "He's farther along that I thought he would be this early." Whitehurst has completed 72 percent of his passes through two games compared to 58 percent for Tarvaris Jackson. Unless T-Jack picks up the pace over the final two preseason games, Whitehurst could start pushing for the Week 1 job.

Charlie Whitehurst completed 14-of-19 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's preseason loss to the Vikings.

Whitehurst was efficient for the second straight game, though today's performance was against Vikings backups. Opposition aside, it was clear he gives the team a better chance to win than Tavaris Jackson. Even before the game was over former Seahawk Lawyer Milloy bluntly tweeted, "Charlie Whitehurst should be our starting QB opening day." Whether coach Pete Carroll is willing to pull the plug on the Jackson experiment before the season remains to be seen.
