Charlie Whitehurst completed 12-of-23 passes for 177 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the Titans' blowout Week 4 loss to the Colts.
Making his fifth start of his career in place of an injured Jake Locker (wrist), 32-year-old Whitehurst had an up-and-down mostly bad day. He missed plenty of throws high and wide, but was also hurt by poor play from his receivers. Justin Hunter had a third-down pass clang right off his hands and into the air for Whitehurst's interception, and Nate Washington dropped a wide-open 18-yard touchdown. On the flip side, Whitehurst threw an easy 18-yard TD over Kendall Wright's head. He eventually found Delanie Walker for a seven-yard score. Whitehurst is one of the worst quarterbacks to take the field this season, as he crumbled in the face of pressure and was sacked three times for 18 yards. He did add 40 yards rushing, though. Whitehurst was replaced by rookie Zach Mettenberger midway through the fourth quarter. Sep 28 - 4:00 PM

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Charlie Whitehurst will start Sunday's Week 4 game against the Colts.

Jake Locker (wrist) is out. Whitehurst is a below-average backup, but isn't that much worse than Locker, who had been playing horrible the past two weeks. Whitehurst, 32, is a checkdown artist, which should benefit Kendall Wright and Delanie Walker in this one. Justin Hunter and Nate Washington weren't doing anything with Locker, so their respective stocks remain unchanged. Look for the Titans to try and pound Shonn Greene. Fire up the Colts defense.

The Nashville Tennessean believes there's a "very real" possibility Jake Locker's strained right (throwing) wrist costs him Week 4.

Locker missed practice Wednesday and his wrist was noticeably swollen. Coach Ken Whisenhunt expressed confidence in Charlie Whitehurst after the practice, confirming the Titans would turn to the 32-year-old journeyman rather than rookie Zach Mettenberger. Whitehurst has appeared in 13 career NFL games, completing an abysmal 54.2 percent of his throws with a 3:4 TD-to-INT ratio and 13 sacks absorbed. If Whitehurst starts in Week 4, the Colts would become an increasingly attractive fantasy defense streamer.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt said Sunday that Charlie Whitehurst remains his No. 2 quarterback.

Sixth-round rookie Zach Mettenberger has had a big month, leading the league in preseason passing yards while completing 68.6 percent of his throws. Meanwhile, Whitehurst hasn't practiced or played since hurting his hand last week. Still, Whiz will likely make the conservative play and turn to safety (Whitehurst) if anything happens to Jake Locker this season.

Titans No. 2 QB Charlie Whitehurst (finger) is "fine."

Checkdown Charlie will be fine to back up Jake Locker for Week 1.
Aug 18 - 1:52 PM

Charlie Whitehurst suffered a right hand injury in Friday night's preseason game.

Whitehurst was forced from the game after taking a sack from Kenny Vaccaro on his third snap. He finished without any pass attempts. Rookie Zach Mettenberger replaced Whitehurst and will get an extended look with the second team.

Titans CEO Tommy Smith said new coach Ken Whisenhunt "pushed hard" for Charlie Whitehurst.

Smith admitted there were "several discussions" within the organization about the backup quarterback spot. In the end, Whisenhunt won out as the Titans made the questionable move of dumping Ryan Fitzpatrick. Although Whitehurst is an expert in Whiz's system, we've seen nothing on tape to suggest he'll be able to move the ball if/when Jake Locker misses time.

Titans signed QB Charlie Whitehurst to a two-year contract with a max value of $8 million.

Whitehurst, 32 in August, spent last season with new Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt in San Diego. The journeyman could have an outside chance at pushing Jake Locker for playing time, and expedite Ryan Fitzpatrick's release. Whitehurst holds a career 54.2 completion rate and 3:4 TD-to-INT ratio across four NFL starts. He's failed to impress every single time we've seen him.

Free agent QB Charlie Whitehurst is visiting the Titans Thursday.

Whitehurst spent last season in San Diego with new Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt. He'd be a downgrade on Ryan Fitzpatrick, which is a concern with Jake Locker coming off Lisfranc surgery and historically injury prone.
Mar 13 - 9:48 AM

Coach Mike McCoy left the door open for Charlie Whitehurst to lose his backup QB job to seventh-round QB Brad Sorensen.

"We're giving everyone an opportunity to compete," said McCoy after watching the tape of San Diego's preseason opener. Sorensen completed 7-of-10 throws for 84 yards and a touchdown against the Seahawks, while Whitehurst was terrifically bad, going 7-of-15 for 59 yards and a pair of interceptions. The new Chargers regime has no ties to Whitehurst, a holdover from ex-GM A.J. Smith.

Chargers QB Charlie Whitehurst (strained MCL) has resumed participating in individual drills, but will be inactive for Thursday's preseason opener.

It shouldn't be long before Philip Rivers' backup is back in team drills. As long as Whitehurst is healthy by the third preseason game, Kevin O'Connell won't be a threat to his job.

Chargers QB Charlie Whitehurst is expected to miss "a couple weeks" after straining his left MCL in Thursday's training camp practice.

Coach Norv Turner's timetable does confirm Whitehurst doesn't have a ligament tear. With only Philip Rivers and UDFA Jarrett Lee left healthy at quarterback, the Chargers are going to sign another one. Free agent Billy Volek has reportedly balked so far because he's not on board with being a "camp arm."

Charlie Whitehurst sustained a left knee injury Thursday, leading the Chargers to put feelers out for possible replacements at quarterback.

There's no sign that Whitehurst's injury is serious, but the Chargers were concerned enough to get on the phone. The Union-Tribune suggests Billy Volek as a logical candidate. Volek spent the past five seasons as a backup to Philip Rivers.

Chargers signed QB Charlie Whitehurst to a two-year contract.

Whitehurst has gone from Chargers third-stringer to Seahawks future starter back to Chargers reserve in the span of just over two years. Owner of a career 54.2 completion percentage on 155 pass attempts, Whitehurst simply isn't accurate or aggressive enough to be more than a low-end backup. On the bright side, he knows Norv Turner's system. Whitehurst will replace Billy Volek as the Chargers' No. 2 quarterback behind Philip Rivers.

The Tacoma News Tribune does not expect the Seahawks to re-sign impending free agent Charlie Whitehurst.

"Check-down Charlie" attempted just 56 passes in 2011. He was so ineffective in his second of two starts that Whitehurst was pulled after only seven throws in favor of Tarvaris Jackson, who was dealing with a debilitating pectoral injury. Whitehurst should draw interest as a low-end backup on the open market.
