Charlie Whitehurst completed 12-of-28 passes for 72 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's Week 17 loss to the Colts.
When Ken Whisenhunt signed Whitehurst to be injury-prone Jake Locker's backup, the move was universally panned. Those critics were proven right. Whitehurst was forced into seven games, losing six of them while completing just 56.7 percent of his passes and throwing seven touchdowns. The Titans, seemingly content with sixth-rounder Zach Mettenberger, desperately need to add talent to the quarterback room. Whitehurst is a third-stringer. Sun, Dec 28, 2014 04:26:00 PM

Charlie Whitehurst completed 24-of-35 passes for 287 yards and a touchdown in the Titans' 21-13, Week 16 loss to the Jaguars.

Clipboard Jesus came out dropping dimes, going 6-of-6 for 71 yards and a touchdown on the Titans' opening drive. He cooled off considerably thereafter, but still delivered a surprising amount of precision passes into tight spaces. He was hurt by a lack of awareness from both Delanie Walker and Derek Hagan on incompletions that should have gone for big yards. Whitehurst has actually performed reasonably well in spot duty this season, but done nothing to disprove the notion that he's a career backup. He won't be on the fantasy radar for next week's finale against the Colts.

Charlie Whitehurst completed 10-of-24 passes for 203 yards Week 15 against the Jets.

Whitehurst replaced Jake Locker just before halftime of the Titans' loss. Whitehurst came out firing out of halftime, completing five of his first nine passes and leading the Titans on two third-quarter scoring drives. Whitehurst struggled when it mattered most, though, taking a sack and throwing three awful passes on 1st down from the Jets' 22 with the game on the line. Locker's injury looked bad enough that Whitehurst will likely start the remainder of the season, but he is not a fantasy option.

Charlie Whitehurst completed 17-of-26 passes for 160 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in Tennessee's 19-17, Week 7 loss to the Redskins.

Checkdown Charlie kept the chains moving in an ugly game, but looked like the backup he is. Whitehurst's receivers did the work on his scores, with Kendall Wright shaking and baking through a scrum, and Derek Hagan getting behind the entire defense. Whitehurst air-mailed Delanie Walker on his pick. It looked like he intentionally threw it over Walker's head. Jake Locker (thumb) should be ready to return in Week 8, but it's not outside the realm of possibility that Tennessee will keep rolling with Whitehurst. Locker has been spectacularly ineffective this season.

Both Terry McCormick of Titans Insider and Jim Wyatt of the Nashville Tennessean believe Charlie Whitehurst will be the Titans' Week 7 starter.

McCormick "thinks" Whitehurst "probably starts," while Wyatt is "expecting the Titans to start" Whitehurst for the second straight week. Although Jake Locker (hand) is officially listed as questionable after a limited practice week, it isn't even clear whether he'll be healthy enough to back up Whitehurst.

Charlie Whitehurst took the bulk of the first-team quarterback reps in Titans practice this week.

Whitehurst is on pace to make his third 2014 start with Jake Locker (hand) still on the shelf, and rookie Zach Mettenberger still waiting in the wings. Whitehurst managed last week's 16-14 win over Jacksonville well enough to last four quarters, but likely remains at risk of an in-game benching pending a slow start. Mettenberger should get snaps sooner rather than later for a Titans team that has little or no playoff hope. Whitehurst is a 32-year-old journeyman.

Charlie Whitehurst completed 17-of-28 passes for 233 yards and no picks or TDs in the Titans' Week 6 win over the Jaguars.

He rushed twice for one yard and absorbed three sacks. Whitehurst drew praise from coach Ken Whisenhunt afterwards for "managing the game" effectively, something the Titans hope to do whenever he is in. With Jake Locker's (hand) status going forward uncertain, Whitehurst could be in line for another start in Week 7 against the Redskins. He's not a two-quarterback-league starter.

Charlie Whitehurst is the Titans' starting quarterback Sunday versus Jacksonville.

Jake Locker (hand) is inactive. The Titans have Zach Mettenberger active for relief availability. If Whitehurst struggles early, we wouldn't be surprised to see coach Ken Whisenhunt give Mettenberger the nod in-game.

Charlie Whitehurst is expected to be the Titans' Week 6 starter.

Jake Locker (hand) did very little in Friday's practice. If Whitehurst struggles out of the gate against the Jaguars, we wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see rookie Zach Mettenberger handle significant snaps. Whitehurst has been competent in relief duty so far this season, but is a disaster waiting to happen.

Charlie Whitehurst came off the bench to complete 13-of-21 passes for 194 yards, two touchdowns, and no picks in the Titans' Week 5 loss to Cleveland.

Whitehurst came in hot off the bench following Jake Locker's second-quarter hand injury, throwing a red-zone score to Kendall Wright and finding Justin Hunter wide open deep down the right side of the field for a 75-yard TD. Things fell apart for Tennessee's offense in the second half, as Whitehurst could generate zero ball movement and the run game didn't work, either. Whitehurst is a low-end NFL backup. We'd recommend that the Titans start Zach Mettenberger in Week 6 against the Jaguars if Locker can't play.

Charlie Whitehurst completed 12-of-23 passes for 177 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the Titans' blowout Week 4 loss to the Colts.

Making his fifth start of his career in place of an injured Jake Locker (wrist), 32-year-old Whitehurst had an up-and-down mostly bad day. He missed plenty of throws high and wide, but was also hurt by poor play from his receivers. Justin Hunter had a third-down pass clang right off his hands and into the air for Whitehurst's interception, and Nate Washington dropped a wide-open 18-yard touchdown. On the flip side, Whitehurst threw an easy 18-yard TD over Kendall Wright's head. He eventually found Delanie Walker for a seven-yard score. Whitehurst is one of the worst quarterbacks to take the field this season, as he crumbled in the face of pressure and was sacked three times for 18 yards. He did add 40 yards rushing, though. Whitehurst was replaced by rookie Zach Mettenberger midway through the fourth quarter.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Charlie Whitehurst will start Sunday's Week 4 game against the Colts.

Jake Locker (wrist) is out. Whitehurst is a below-average backup, but isn't that much worse than Locker, who had been playing horrible the past two weeks. Whitehurst, 32, is a checkdown artist, which should benefit Kendall Wright and Delanie Walker in this one. Justin Hunter and Nate Washington weren't doing anything with Locker, so their respective stocks remain unchanged. Look for the Titans to try and pound Shonn Greene. Fire up the Colts defense.

The Nashville Tennessean believes there's a "very real" possibility Jake Locker's strained right (throwing) wrist costs him Week 4.

Locker missed practice Wednesday and his wrist was noticeably swollen. Coach Ken Whisenhunt expressed confidence in Charlie Whitehurst after the practice, confirming the Titans would turn to the 32-year-old journeyman rather than rookie Zach Mettenberger. Whitehurst has appeared in 13 career NFL games, completing an abysmal 54.2 percent of his throws with a 3:4 TD-to-INT ratio and 13 sacks absorbed. If Whitehurst starts in Week 4, the Colts would become an increasingly attractive fantasy defense streamer.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt said Sunday that Charlie Whitehurst remains his No. 2 quarterback.

Sixth-round rookie Zach Mettenberger has had a big month, leading the league in preseason passing yards while completing 68.6 percent of his throws. Meanwhile, Whitehurst hasn't practiced or played since hurting his hand last week. Still, Whiz will likely make the conservative play and turn to safety (Whitehurst) if anything happens to Jake Locker this season.

Titans No. 2 QB Charlie Whitehurst (finger) is "fine."

Checkdown Charlie will be fine to back up Jake Locker for Week 1.
