The Saints are expected to use a rotation of Parys Haralson and Victor Butler at the outside linebacker position opposite Junior Galette.
Haralson is penciled in as the early-down "starter" because he's a proficient edge-setting run defender. Butler will likely play in all sub-packages as the superior pass-rushing force. New Orleans finished with a top-five defense in Rob Ryan's first year as coordinator. The team looks even better on paper this season, with Butler back healthy and Jairus Byrd added at free safety. Saints re-signed OLB Parys Haralson.

Acquired from the 49ers last August, Haralson helped set the edge of Rob Ryan's 3-4 defense, making eight starts while appearing in all 16 games. He missed the Saints' Divisional Round loss after tearing his pectoral muscle in the Wild Card Round, however. Now on the wrong side of 30, Haralson has missed only one regular-season game since 2006, and played 367 snaps last season. He's a nice piece of depth.

The Packers are "expected to consider" free agent OLB Parys Haralson.

He'd be a depth signing behind Clay Matthews and Nick Perry, likely replacing Mike Neal. Despite pre-free agency speculation to the contrary, Green Bay GM Ted Thompson has treated this signing period as he always has done, essentially avoiding it. Haralson, 30, had 3.5 sacks last season in New Orleans.
Mar 12 - 12:57 PM

The Saints have had "preliminary discussions" about re-signing free agent OLB Parys Haralson.

Haralson, 30, was acquired from the 49ers in August and contributed as a run-stuffing 3-4 outside 'backer before suffering a torn pectoral muscle in the Wild Card win over the Eagles. He should come cheap on a short-term deal.

Feb 25 - 9:28 AM

Saints placed OLB Parys Haralson on injured reserve with a torn pectoral, ending his season.

Haralson suffered the injury in Saturday's Wild Card win over the Eagles. He'd been setting the edge as a run-stuffing outside linebacker in the Saints' 3-4 defense. The Saints promoted sixth-round rookie OLB Rufus Johnson from the practice squad in a corresponding move. Will Herring will likely bookend Junior Galette at outside 'backer this weekend.
Jan 7 - 3:46 PM

The Saints believe OLB Parys Haralson tore a pectoral muscle in Saturday's Wild Card win over the Eagles.

Returning for the Super Bowl wouldn't be realistic. Haralson has been an on-and-off starter for New Orleans this season, providing solid run defense as an edge-setting outside linebacker. The Saints may have to start career special teamer Will Herring opposite Junior Galette moving forward.
Jan 5 - 11:23 AM

Saints OLB Parys Haralson left Saturday's Wild Card game against the Eagles with a chest injury.

Haralson was injured on a tackle at the end of the first half and is doubtful to return. Will Herring has replaced him in the starting lineup.
Jan 4 - 9:45 PM

Saints acquired OLB Parys Haralson from the 49ers in exchange for a 2014 conditional seventh-round pick.

The Saints are the most desperate team in football when it comes to pass rushers, and this move just confirms it. The 49ers were going to cut Haralson. 29 years old, Haralson didn't play a down last season due to a triceps tear, and hasn't registered more than five sacks in any campaign since 2008. He's a long shot to help New Orleans. Meanwhile, the 49ers are loaded with pass rushers. They have Cam Johnson and rookie Corey Lemonier coming off highly impressive preseasons behind Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks.

CSN Bay Area reports the 49ers are shopping OLB Parys Haralson.

It's an indication Haralson will be cut if the 49ers can't find a trade partner. An eight-year veteran, Haralson agreed to slash his 2013 salary from $2.67 million to $1.15 million in March. Haralson missed all of 2012 with a torn triceps.

49ers OLB Parys Haralson agreed to a pay cut, slashing his 2013 salary from $2.57 million to $1.3 million.

Haralson can earn another $400,000 through incentives. The 29-year-old missed the entire 2012 season with a torn triceps muscle, and he was squarely on the roster bubble with the inflated salary. Haralson has 21.5 career sacks. He'll back up Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks in 2013, and hit free agency after the season.

49ers OLB Parys Haralson (triceps surgery) is expected to be a full participant in offseason workouts.

After recording two sacks in 2011, Haralson missed the 2012 season when he tore his left triceps lifting weights in the preseason. Although his return could theoretically add pass-rushing depth to a 49ers roster that needs it, beat writer Matt Maiocco wonders if Haralson might be cut due to a $2.57 million salary.

49ers OLB Parys Haralson, who was placed on injured reserve September 3, has resumed lifting weights after tearing his left triceps in the preseason.

Coach Jim Harbaugh wouldn't describe the injury after it happened, but Haralson told CSN Bay Area the extent. He expects to return by OTAs or minicamp. Due a $2.57 million salary in 2013, however, Haralson may be an offseason cap casualty. Ahmad Brooks and Aldon Smith are locked in as starters ahead of him.

49ers placed OLB Parys Haralson on injured reserve, ending his season.

Coach Jim Harbaugh has declined to reveal the extent of this injury, but it's reportedly to Haralson's left arm or wrist. Haralson lost his starting job to Aldon Smith, but he was still expected to play a major role off the bench, allowing Smith to rush from defensive end in nickel packages. The 49ers signed Clark Haggans as insurance, although he may be facing a three-game suspension. Haralson turns 29 in January and is owed a $2.57 million base salary next year. He may have played his final snap with the 49ers.

49ers OLB Parys Haralson is expected to lose his starting job in 2012.

Haralson is a proficient edge-setting outside 'backer, but he's a mediocre pass rusher and the Niners want Aldon Smith on the field as an every-down player. Look for Haralson to play on running downs going forward, seening something like 30-40 percent of the snaps. Smith and Ahmad Brooks will be the starters.
Wed, Feb 29, 2012 03:11:00 PM

49ers OLB Parys Haralson was forced from Sunday's game in the second half with a hamstring injury.

Haralson's day is likely done with just nine minutes left in the game. Impressive rookie pass rusher Aldon Smith will likely be a full-time player the rest of the way.
