Bills LE Mario Williams expects to line up "all over the place" in new DC Mike Pettine's aggressive, blitz-heavy system.
"If I had to guess I’ll probably be all over the place," Williams said. "But it comes with working out and being able to just move and know whenever you’re in a different position that you have to switch it up a little bit in terms of your point of attack." Although he finished with 10.5 sacks, Williams is coming off a disappointing first season in Buffalo. Rex Ryan's right-hand man the past four seasons, Pettine favors a "multiple" approach and exotic blitzes. He has the right pedigree to spark Williams in the second year of his massive contract. Although new Bills DC Mike Pettine has been a 3-4 guru, he plans to run some 4-3 looks as well, depending on personnel.

"We'll be a multiple front, multiple coverage defense," said Pettine. "The trademark of our defense is we're going to be smart, tough and relentless. How we configure it is more player-driven. I've always believed that you don't fit your players to your scheme, but you fit your scheme to your players." At this point, the personnel are suited to a 4-3 scheme. Look for that to change gradually over the next year or two.

Bills LE Mario Williams credits a healed wrist for his recent surge in production.

"My wrist deal is healing definitely," he said. "When I got the procedure and everybody was freaking out about it, I knew that after doing that it was going to progress and not be stagnant. ... But it’s definitely feeling better and it's making me feel better." Williams quietly is up to 9.5 sacks through 12 games, and the Bills are playing strong run defense of late.

Mario Williams recorded three sacks in Sunday's Week 12 loss to the Bills.

Perhaps Williams' wrist really was behind his early-season struggles. Since undergoing surgery during the bye week, he has five sacks in four games. During the first seven weeks of the season, Williams managed just 3.5 sacks. "The biggest thing for me is my morale and feeling better," he said. "That helped me tremendously."

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Sunday Countdown that Bills LE Mario Williams played the first seven games with a torn ligament in his left wrist.

"He was playing with the equivalent of one arm," Schefter said. Williams underwent surgery during Buffalo's Week 8 bye and is expected to be fine going forward. It does sound like there was a significant injury here, perhaps at least partially explaining Williams' underwhelming first-half production.

Bills LE Mario Williams (wrist surgery) is practicing in full this week.

Williams is ready to roll for his Houston homecoming. Now the question is whether his cleanup operation has indeed increased his range of motion. The Bills desperately need their $96 million man to get going if their defense isn't to remain a laughingstock in the second half of the season.

Bills LE Mario Williams said his wrist injury has limited his ability to work out.

Williams' left wrist was in bad enough shape that he couldn't maintain his upper body strength via lifting weights. It's one reason he has just 3.5 sacks in seven games this year. "I'm a hands-on person, and everything I do is with my hands and working out," he said. "And not being able to do that, mentally, has just been frustrating." Williams, who underwent a procedure during the bye that has increased his range of motion, is fully expected to play in Week 9.

Bills LE Mario Williams (wrist surgery) fully expects to play in Week 9.

Williams went under-the-knife during the Bills' bye week, but will be ready to suit up against the Texans barring a setback. The league's highest-paid defender has just 3.5 sacks through seven games.

Coach Chan Gailey announced at Wednesday's presser that LE Mario Williams underwent a "procedure" on his ailing left wrist, but is expected to resume practicing following the Bills' Week 8 bye.

"Mario will be back to practice next week, that's what I expect," Gailey said. The Bills have clearly dodged a bullet with their $96 million man, but it's far from a given a cleanup procedure will cure what's been ailing his game. Williams has placed a large amount of the blame for his slow start (3.5 sacks in seven games) on his wrist. The Bills will visit Williams' former home Houston in Week 9.

Bills LE Mario Williams (wrist) was absent from Wednesday's practice.

It's Williams' first missed practice of the season, and comes on the heels of the Tuesday report that he's considering wrist surgery. It's obviously not a good sign, though the Bills are on bye this week. Williams' status may not be updated until next week.

The Buffalo News reports Bills LE Mario Williams is contemplating undergoing surgery on his sprained left wrist.

It's unclear how extensive of an operation Williams is considering, or how much time he might miss. Although he wasn't listed on the injury report until two weeks ago, Williams is believed to have been playing through the ailment for most, if not all, of the season. In year one of the most lucrative contract ever given to a defensive player, Williams has just 3.5 sacks through seven games despite playing a monster 425 snaps. A prolonged absence would further doom the Bills' moribund defense, and perhaps seal DC Dave Wannstedt's fate as a one-and-done coordinator.

Bills LE Mario Williams says he's playing with "a lot of hesitation" due to a wrist injury.

Williams hasn't missed a practice or game due to the injury. He played 88 percent of the snaps against the Titans in Week 7, but made just two tackles. Afterward, he got testy when asked if he thought he was living up to expectations. "I don't care about your expectations. I don't care about anybody’s expectations," he said. Williams' stats don't tell the whole story of his impact on a game, but it's hard to make excuses for his 16 tackles and 3.5 sacks through seven weeks.

Bills LE Mario Williams is blaming his slow start in Buffalo on a sore left wrist.

Williams has nine tackles and 1.5 sacks in four games. He's been playing with a cast on the hand, but has not appeared on the weekly injury reports or missed any practice time. "I'm a hands-on player and it's all about power in my game," Williams said. "It's just been a little odd having a little nick or whatever and not being able to use it to the full extent, but you know, you gotta play."

Bills LE Mario Williams was held to a single tackle in his Buffalo debut.

Mario also got just one hit on Mark Sanchez, after Sanchez released the ball. Williams was "furious" after the game about the replacement refs' no-calls of alleged penalties by Jets RT Austin Howard. "Pass blocking doesn't include hands to the face," Williams said. "When someone tells the officials that, and they just walk away, or they don't call it, that is disheartening."

Bills LE Mario Williams is also seeing some action at right end in OTAs.

Williams is expected to line up primarily at left end this season, but the Bills apparently see value in getting him some reps at his old position. GM Buddy Nix has insisted the Bills have "no plans" to use Williams at outside linebacker. Williams made an immediate impression on teammates in his first practice with the Bills, leading QB Ryan Fitzpatrick to compare him to a "Madden character."
