The Bills are expected to approach Mario Williams about restructuring his contract.
Williams has three years and $55-plus million remaining on his deal. Buffalo wants to lower his cap number to free up money for a Marcell Dareus extension. The Bills have the third-lowest cap space for 2016, behind only Miami and New Orleans. Jul 3 - 5:29 PM

Mario Williams will play outside linebacker in Rex Ryan's new 3-4 scheme.

Williams played left end under Jim Schwartz last season, but Rex disciple Mike Pettine used him at outside linebacker in 2013. Regardless of whether he lines up in a two- or three-point stance, Williams' role in Ryan's defense will be to rush the quarterback. Williams figures to align at outside linebacker on base downs, and rush from defensive end in sub-packages.

Bills LE Mario Williams underwent offseason hip surgery, but is participating in Organized Team Activities.

It sounds like Williams needed some kind of scope. He started off on fire last season with 11 sacks in the first eight games, but posted just two after that. Perhaps this hip issue was to blame. Williams, still only 29, has missed just 14 games in his eight-year career -- and none since joining the Bills in 2012.

Bills OLB Mario Williams recorded just two sacks in the final eight games of the season.

Williams posted 13 sacks on the season, and got off to a very hot start with multi-sack days in three of the Bills' first seven games, including 4.5 against the Panthers in Week 2. He cooled significantly in the second half of the season, all but disappearing for stretches. We expect Williams to remain a boom-bust DL1 in IDP leagues for 2014.

Bills OLB Mario Williams registered two sacks in Sunday's Week 7 upset of the Dolphins, bringing his season total to ten.

Williams only has 19 tackles on the year -- which makes him an entirely boom-or-bust IDP -- but he's quickly soaring atop the NFL's sack list. Williams is now tied with Chiefs LOLB Justin Houston for the league lead. On Sunday, Williams almost single-handedly took over the game by relentlessly abusing Dolphins RT Tyson Clabo and getting to Ryan Tannehill.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Mario Williams has been diagnosed with a sprained ankle, but is currently planning to play in Week 4.

That is, "unless his ankle doesn't get better later this week." Speaking Monday, Bills coach Doug Marrone said Williams was "fine," but Marrone has brought new meaning to "coachspeak" since joining the NFL ranks. For now, Williams should be considered day to day, and questionable for Sunday's game against the Ravens.

Bills coach Doug Marrone expects Mario Williams (undisclosed) and DT Marcell Dareus (ankle) to be "fine" for Week 4.

Marrone isn't always the most truthful with the media, but for now there's no reason to doubt him. Williams was spotted limping after departing Sunday's game in the fourth quarter, while Dareus was immediately ruled out for the rest of the afternoon upon going down. Buffalo badly needs both players for its Week 4 tilt with the Ravens.

Mario Williams left Sunday's Week 3 loss to the Jets in the fourth quarter with an undisclosed injury.

Williams went down while trying to block an extra point and never returned. The Bills haven't disclosed the nature of the injury, but Williams was spotted limping and heading for X-rays after the game. Williams has seven tackles and 4.5 sacks through three games. All of those sacks came in a Week 2 ravaging of the Panthers.

Mario Williams set a franchise record with 4.5 sacks in Sunday's Week 2 win over the Panthers.

Bruce Smith previously held the record with four sacks in a game against the Oilers in 1994. Williams is clearly over the plantar fasciitis issue he battled during training camp. "Physically I feel great and mentally I'm better than ever," he said. Williams recorded 10.5 sacks during the entire 2012 season.

Appearing on NFL Network's GameDay Morning, Ian Rapoport reported Bills LE Mario Williams is battling plantar fasciitis.

Williams missed a week or so of training camp to get his troublesome foot checked out by noted specialist Dr. Robert Anderson. While plantar fasciitis is painful, it's something Williams can play through. His first test of the season will be against Patriots RT Sebastian Vollmer in Sunday's opener.

Bills LE Mario Williams (foot) has rejoined the team at training camp.

Williams left Bills camp on Sunday to get his foot checked out by noted specialist Dr. Robert Anderson. Everything came back clean structurally, but he's been told to rest the foot. He's not in danger of missing Week 1. The only serious injury of Williams' career has been a torn pectoral, sustained in 2011.

A second opinion of Bills LE Mario Williams's troublesome foot revealed "no serious damage," and he's expected to be "fine."

Williams' health has been the talk of Bills camp, but it appears they've dodged a bullet. Buffalo's $96 million man should return to practice sometime in the next week. Williams appeared in all 16 games last season, but was diminished as he played through a wrist injury.

Bills DE Mario Williams says he doesn't have a position in new DC Mike Pettine's hybrid 3-4 defense.

"If I was going to be labeled I’d probably be labeled defensive end because of my size," Williams said. "But I don’t have a position." Pettine says that's by design. "We want to get the bulls-eye off him and move him around," Pettine said. "We want to dictate to teams that if they’re going to deal with Mario, they’re going to have to find him first. I think he’s certainly smart enough to handle it and versatile enough to handle it." Known for an aggressive, blitz-heavy approach, Pettine should be able to coax a big season out of the Bills' $96 million man.

Bills LE Mario Williams expects to line up "all over the place" in new DC Mike Pettine's aggressive, blitz-heavy system.

"If I had to guess I’ll probably be all over the place," Williams said. "But it comes with working out and being able to just move and know whenever you’re in a different position that you have to switch it up a little bit in terms of your point of attack." Although he finished with 10.5 sacks, Williams is coming off a disappointing first season in Buffalo. Rex Ryan's right-hand man the past four seasons, Pettine favors a "multiple" approach and exotic blitzes. He has the right pedigree to spark Williams in the second year of his massive contract.

Although new Bills DC Mike Pettine has been a 3-4 guru, he plans to run some 4-3 looks as well, depending on personnel.

"We'll be a multiple front, multiple coverage defense," said Pettine. "The trademark of our defense is we're going to be smart, tough and relentless. How we configure it is more player-driven. I've always believed that you don't fit your players to your scheme, but you fit your scheme to your players." At this point, the personnel are suited to a 4-3 scheme. Look for that to change gradually over the next year or two.
