Dolphins DC Vance Joseph believes Mario Williams has begun to play better because he's trying harder.
Playing in a "revenge game" against his former team Buffalo on Sunday, Williams had one of his best efforts of the season. He's looked improved since Joseph publicly called out his effort 11 days ago. "Once he played harder he obviously is going to play better," Joseph said. Although he's now 31, Williams still has more than enough juice left to make an impact if he wants to. Oct 24 - 1:45 PM

Dolphins DC Vance Joseph said DE Mario Williams "has to play better."

Joseph also questioned Williams' effort, which was an issue in Buffalo last season when he posted just five sacks. He is on pace for just three this year. The former All-Pro has been a profound disappointment.

Dolphins DE Mario Williams (concussion) is active for Week 2 against the Patriots.

Williams had been expected to be cleared all along. He is part of a defensive line rotation for Miami's defense.
Sep 18 - 11:29 AM

Dolphins DE Mario Williams (concussion, questionable) is expected to play Week 2.

Williams somewhat surprisingly returned to a full practice on Friday. Coach Adam Gase said Williams is not yet out of the concussion protocol, but he is expected to play barring a setback. Williams was a big factor in the Dolphins' surprising performance in Seattle last week.
Sep 17 - 9:33 AM

Dolphins DE Mario Williams (concussion, questionable) returned to a full practice on Friday.

He looks poised to play Sunday against New England. It's a huge boost to Miami's pass rush and will likely keep Martellus Bennett on the line to block.
Sep 16 - 1:18 PM

Dolphins DE Mario Williams (concussion) remained sidelined at Thursday's practice.

The Dolphins haven't ruled him out yet but if Williams doesn't return to practice by Friday, he'll have little chance of suiting up against New England in Week 2. Adam Gase said the team will use a committee to replace Williams if he can't go on Sunday.
Sep 15 - 2:58 PM

Dolphins DE Mario Williams left Sunday's opener with a concussion.

Williams was forced from the game late in the fourth quarter. Andre Branch replaced him in the lineup and would start opposite Jason Jones if Mario misses time. Cameron Wake has been reduced to a situational pass rusher.
Sep 11 - 6:44 PM

Mario Williams said playing in the Dolphins' scheme is "much sweeter" than playing with the Bills last season.

Williams was openly critical of the Bills' game plan last year, but he seems to have found a happy home in Miami. "You’re giving us the green light. So you go," Williams said. "We don’t have any other responsibilities, really, just go." With serious questions in the secondary, the Dolphins will need Williams and company to get plenty of pressure this season.
Sep 6 - 10:23 AM

Mario Williams said he is "very fortunate" to be returning to a scheme he feels comfortable playing.

"[DC Vance Joseph] is really relying on the guys up front to turn it loose and get after it, which is what most of us are accustomed to doing," Williams said. "It’s exciting for us knowing [we can] cut it loose." Williams showed little effort playing in a system he was openly unhappy with last year in Buffalo, but he has had nothing but praise for his new coaching staff. The Dolphins are banking on a bounceback season for the 31-year-old.
May 26 - 8:50 AM

Mario Williams plans to give the Dolphins "the best attitude" he's ever had.

Williams wasn't happy with his role on the Bills last season and voiced his displeasure by giving minimal effort. He promises that won't be an issue in Miami. "The No. 1 thing that you can definitely look forward to [from me] is attitude," said Williams. "I know for sure I’m going to be out there humming 100 miles per hour and it’s going to be full attitude." Williams is excited to be part of an aggressive pass rush featuring Cameron Wake and Ndamukong Suh. The five sacks Williams registered last year were his fewest since 2011 when he was limited to only five games.
Apr 17 - 11:19 AM

Mario Williams expects to be used primarily as a pass rusher with the Dolphins.

"I know (Dolphins DC Vance Joseph) and his mindset," Williams said. "It’s going to be … the dogs are going to hunt. Guys who get after the quarterback are going to get after the quarterback." Williams' primary complaint with Bills coach Rex Ryan was his scheme did not allow the pass rushers to rush the passer enough. It does not appear that will be an issue in Miami. If Williams has his head on straight, he should have a bounce-back season.
Mar 10 - 8:35 AM

Dolphins agreed to terms with DE Mario Williams on a two-year, $17 million contract.

Williams can earn an extra $3 million through incentives. The offseason is the Dolphins' postseason. Their March dynasty is approaching Belichick-esque levels. Now 31, Williams was widely accused of quitting last season before being released by the Bills last week. Williams is one of the best pass rushers of his generation, and is well worth a flier, but it will be a risky deal for the perennially cap-strapped 'Fins. His addition will almost certainly mean the release of Cam Wake.
Mar 8 - 4:36 PM

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reports the Dolphins are the "clear front-runners to sign" free agent DE Mario Williams.

Florio reports there is a "push" to get the deal done Tuesday. Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reports the impending deal "may be worth roughly $8 million per year." A deal with Williams could prompt the Dolphins to rescind Olivier Vernon's transition tag or, more likely, release veteran Cameron Wake, who is scheduled to count $9.8 million against the cap.
Mar 8 - 10:56 AM

NJ Advance Media's Jordan Raanan reports free agent DE Mario Williams is "not in play for the Giants at this time."

The Giants reportedly had serious interest in Williams after he was cut by the Bills, but his reported $10 million asking price may have put them off. New York has switched their focus to the Rams' William Hayes, the Falcons' Adrian Clayborn, and the Dolphins' Olivier Vernon, who is unable to negotiate until Wednesday under the terms of the transition tag. Williams has already visited the Dolphins and is expected to draw interest from the Jaguars.
Mar 8 - 9:14 AM

Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reports free agent DE Mario Williams has told teams he would immediately sign an offer of $10 million per year.

Williams left his meeting with the Dolphins Saturday without a deal, suggesting they are offering less than his $10 million asking price. The Giants and Jaguars are expected to be interested as well, and both have the cap space to accommodate a big deal. Teams may be put off by Williams' lack of effort in Buffalo last year, but he is just one year removed from an All-Pro season. He should land a sizable deal from a 4-3 team.
