Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports the Dolphins are expected to cut Mario Williams following the season.
It is not a surprise after Williams was a healthy scratch in Week 17. $3.5 million of Williams' $8.485 million base salary will become guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2017 league year, so the move should come early in the offseason. After quitting on the Bills last season, Williams looks like he will be one-and-done in Miami. He could struggle to find anything more than one-year deals on the open market. Jan 3 - 10:34 AM

Dolphins DE Mario Williams is a healthy scratch for Week 17.

The Fins are playing this game to win, so Williams isn't being rested. He's been benched. He was one of the most predictable flops of the 2016 free agent period after quitting on the Bills last season. The rest of the Dolphins' Week 17 inactives are CB Byron Maxwell, LB Jelani Jenkins, TE Dominique Jones, WR Leonte Carroo, QB Ryan Tannehill, and TE Thomas Duarte.

Dolphins DE Mario Williams said he has no plans to retire after the season.

Williams admitted that he could undergo surgery after the season if his ankle doesn't improve over the next few weeks, but he isn't ready to call it quits yet. "No, no," said Williams when asked about retirement. "I don't want it to end like this." The 11-year veteran has been a situational pass rusher when healthy this year and could be a release candidate this offseason.

The Dolphins are expected to release DE Mario Williams this offseason.

Williams has struggled with injuries and been a situational pass rusher when healthy this year. It's an easy decision to move on from his $10.5 million cap number. Releasing Williams will save Miami $8.5 million.

Dolphins DE Mario Williams (ankle, doubtful) did not practice Friday.

Williams has now missed two practices in a row after getting in a limited session Wednesday. It looks like he will sit out this week.

Dolphins DE Mario Williams (ankle) didn't practice on Thursday.

He's trending in the wrong direction after getting a limited session in on Wednesday. Jason Jones would play a bigger role if Williams sits out against the Cardinals in Week 14. Jones is coming off a two-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Dolphins DE Mario Williams (ankle) will play Week 12 against the 49ers.

Williams sat out last week after injuring his ankle in Week 10, but he is ready to get back on the field. Williams only has 1.5 sacks, but he was getting plenty of pressure before going down. His return is a nice boost for a strong defensive line.

Mario Williams (ankle) returned to practice on Friday.

That gives him at least a chance to suit up Sunday against Los Angeles. Williams sprained his ankle last week in a win over the Chargers. Adam Gase said earlier this week that Williams was "not where he wants to be," but obviously he's made some progress over the last couple days.

Dolphins coach Adam Gase said Mario Williams (ankle) is "not where he wants to be."

Williams was able to avoid a high-ankle sprain in last week's win over San Diego but his status for Week 11 is very much in question. "Hopefully he’ll feel better by the end of the week, but right now, he’s not where he wants to be," said Gase. "We’ll see how this progresses as the week goes on." Williams has earned PFF's 12th-highest grade among 4-3 defensive ends this year.

Mario Williams (ankle) is day to day.

It sounds like Williams avoided a high-ankle sprain against the Chargers. Williams doesn't have a sack since Week 1, but Pro Football Focus has charted him as generating consistent pressure.

Mario Williams exited Week 10 against the Chargers with an ankle injury.

Williams exited in the second half and was seen without his helmet on the sidelines. He is officially questionable to return. Williams was having a good game, helping the Dolphins keep consistent pressure on Philip Rivers.

Dolphins DC Vance Joseph believes Mario Williams has begun to play better because he's trying harder.

Playing in a "revenge game" against his former team Buffalo on Sunday, Williams had one of his best efforts of the season. He's looked improved since Joseph publicly called out his effort 11 days ago. "Once he played harder he obviously is going to play better," Joseph said. Although he's now 31, Williams still has more than enough juice left to make an impact if he wants to.

Dolphins DC Vance Joseph said DE Mario Williams "has to play better."

Joseph also questioned Williams' effort, which was an issue in Buffalo last season when he posted just five sacks. He is on pace for just three this year. The former All-Pro has been a profound disappointment.

Dolphins DE Mario Williams (concussion, questionable) is expected to play Week 2.

Williams somewhat surprisingly returned to a full practice on Friday. Coach Adam Gase said Williams is not yet out of the concussion protocol, but he is expected to play barring a setback. Williams was a big factor in the Dolphins' surprising performance in Seattle last week.
