A league source tells CSN New England that Joseph Addai "quit" his conditioning test after struggling to complete it.

We suspect the other 31 NFL teams will now be even more hesitant to take a chance on Addai, as his commitment level will be questioned. Much like Clinton Portis last summer, Addai has reached a point in his career where he's essentially a blitz-pickup specialist with little to offer as a runner. It's fair to question whether he'll play another snap in the league.

Free agent Joseph Addai failed his team physical before being released by the Patriots Wednesday.

Addai may have taken his role for granted after signing a one-year contract that included $125,000 in guarantees back in May. But at age 29 with little left in the tank, being in tip-top shape was imperative for the ex-Colt. Addai won't attract heavy interest on the open market.

Patriots released RB Joseph Addai.

The Pats wound up sinking $125,000 into Addai in the form of a signing bonus and offseason workout bonus. Addai was never going to help the Patriots as a ball carrier, but the 29-year-old can still pick up the blitz and always seemed likely to at least last into August. He didn't, which can be taking as a sign that Addai's career is on life support. New England will move forward with Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, and Danny Woodhead atop the depth chart.

According to the Boston Globe, "word is" Joseph Addai wasn't impressive in the Patriots' offensive program.

The Globe took the "word" seriously enough that it doesn't project Addai to crack the 53-man roster. ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss opined in June that Addai would likely go down as "one of the Patriots' best free agent signings," so there's clearly a difference of opinion on his Foxboro future. Addai doesn't have much left, though. We wouldn't be surprised whatsoever if he was cut by September.

ESPN Boston puts Joseph Addai's chances of cracking the Patriots' 53-man roster at 80 percent.

Reporter Mike Rodak believes Addai's closest competition for a roster spot will be Danny Woodhead, and reiterates he isn't expected to be a big contributor outside of pass protection. Provided Addai is healthy and doesn't look completely washed up in the preseason, he should break camp with the Pats.

According to ESPN Boston, Joseph Addai was signed primarily due to the Patriots' renewed emphasis on improving blitz pickup this season.

"If all goes according to the coaching staff's plan, you'll be hearing a lot more about Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen this year," writes ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss. The implication is that Addai will be limited to Kevin Faulk's old role as Tom Brady's personal protector on passing downs.

ESPN's Mike Reiss thinks RB Joseph Addai will go down as one of the Patriots' best free agent signings.

Reiss calls Addai a "low-key, versatile, mentor-type professional" who complements the younger Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, and Danny Woodhead well. Assuming Addai makes the team, he'll only see a handful of touches if everything goes according to plan.

Joseph Addai's one-year deal with the Patriots contains a non-guaranteed base salary of $725,000 and a roster bonus of $218,750.

In other words, Addai will have to earn his roster spot in training camp and preseason action. While he does receive a $75,000 signing bonus and a $50,000 workout bonus, the Pats are unlikely to pick up that roster bonus in September if he doesn't prove to be a more reliable option than Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen.

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss does not consider Joseph Addai a lock to make the Patriots' roster.

The Pats carried five tailbacks last season, but could go with fewer after adding a third tight end, a trio of fullbacks, and a long list of veteran receivers. Still, it's unlikely that New England will head into 2012 with just three tailbacks, so Addai's roster spot should be safe. At best, he'll see a handful of carries and third-down work. At worst, he'd simply be insurance behind Danny Woodhead, Stevan Ridley, and Shane Vereen.

Patriots signed RB Joseph Addai, formerly of the Colts.

Addai visited the Patriots last month, but otherwise received no other known interest on the free agent market. In New England, his primary responsibilities will be limited to third-down/passing situations. Stevan Ridley remains the leading candidate for early-down work, while 2011 second-round pick Shane Vereen and Danny Woodhead are complementary, change-of-pace options.

Throw Addai into the over-the-hill gang of running backs the Patriots hosted Friday. At this point, it's thought that they're just looking at Ryan Grant, Tim Hightower and Addai for emergency kind of insurance. Addai has attracted no interest on the open market since getting dumped by the Colts.

Colts GM Ryan Grigson made it clear the team has little interest in re-signing free agents Joseph Addai, Dallas Clark, Gary Brackett, and Melvin Bullitt.

"At some point, maybe you revisit it," Grigson said. "We're confident with the decisions we made at the time. We still are and we're moving forward." The four Colts veterans have attracted little interest on the market and will likely have to wait until after the draft to catch on with a team.

The Denver Post believes free agent RB Joseph Addai "could get a look" from the Broncos.

It's a natural fit. A major injury risk and not much of a running threat at age 29, Addai isn't generating much interest from other teams. He remains a trusted pass protector and outlet receiver for Peyton Manning, however. Willis McGahee was rarely used on passing downs last season.

Colts released RB Joseph Addai.

The team's Friday releases of Addai, MLB Gary Brackett, SS Melvin Bullitt, and TE Dallas Clark take the Colts off the hook for $14.83 million worth of 2012 base salaries. Per Brian McIntyre of Football Outsiders, however, the moves only save about $5 million in salary cap space. Addai can still pass protect and catch passes, but he lacks any hint of explosion in his lower body going on age 29. He's missed 12 games due to injury over the past two seasons.
