Giants released NT Gabe Watson.
Despite all the injuries in New York, Watson still couldn't lock down a roster spot. He appeared in just seven games for the Cardinals last season, and might be done as an NFL player. Sat, Sep 3, 2011 11:26:00 AM

Giants signed NT Gabe Watson, formerly of the Cardinals.

Watson was billed as a first-round talent coming out for the 2007 draft, but he fell out of the top 100 and has done little since. The G-Men will probably just use Watson as a practice body, unless injuries force them to keep him.

The Giants are trying out free agent NT Gabe Watson on Tuesday.

New starting nose tackle Linval Joseph has looked good early in camp, but he's only 22 years old. The Giants could use some depth. Perhaps Watson would be able to salvage his career as a rotational run-stuffer in a 4-3 scheme.

Free agent NT Gabe Watson is willing to play for the veteran's minimum.

Watson's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, made this clear when he sent a list of his players willing to play for the league minimum to all 32 teams. Watson, 27, was a fourth-round pick in 2006. The Cardinals have shown no interest in retaining him after he struggled off the bench last year, appearing in just seven games.

The Cardinals did not extend a tender to NT Gabe Watson, making him an unrestricted free agent.

The former fourth-round pick plummeted down the depth chart last season, playing behind Bryan Robinson, Dan Williams, and Alan Branch. Watson was once a heralded college prospect, but hasn't panned out in the pros. He'll finish his Cardinals career with 105 tackles and two sacks in 62 appearances.

Cardinals NT Gabe Watson has lost about 30 pounds since the end of last season.

We previously thought Watson was playing overweight at 340, but it turns out he was an unruly 360. The Cardinals brought in major competition in the form of first-round pick Dan Williams, a battle we expect Watson to lose. And he'll also have to beat out veteran Bryan Robinson, something he's struggled to do in the past. Watson knows he's no lock to make the team.

Cardinals NT Gabe Watson sustained an 80 percent MCL tear in the final playoff game against the Saints last January.

The injury didn't require surgery, but this is the third straight offseason Watson has rehabbed a knee injury. On a positive note, he's down 30 pounds from last season when he was overweight at 340 pounds. Watson is expected to start for the first time this year.

Cardinals re-signed restricted free agent NT Gabe Watson to a one-year, $1.759 million contract.

Watson, 26, is set to start for the first time in his career with the Cards poised to move on from Bryan Robinson. A fourth-round pick in 2006, the 332-pound Watson finished 2009 with 28 tackles as a wave player on the nose.

The Cardinals have extended a second-round tender to restricted free agent NT Gabe Watson.

A first-round tender would've been more convincing if the Cards were planning to make Watson their nose tackle of the future, but he is on track to start in 2010 as it stands. Incumbent Bryan Robinson will test free agency.

Cardinals NT Gabe Watson revealed that he underwent offseason knee surgery in April.

Watson fractured his knee cap in a treadmill accident last year and played through the injury with pins digging into his tendon. His recent surgery was the second in two years. The surgery will hurt his chances of reclaiming his starting job from Bryan Robinson.

Cardinals signed restricted free agent NT Gabe Watson to a one-year, $1.545 million contract.

Watson lost his starting job to trusty vet Bryan Robinson last year, but remains Arizona's best long-term bet at nose tackle. The 6'3/332-pounder is light years ahead of Alan Branch and will push Robinson hard all summer.

The Cardinals extended a second-round tender ($1.545 million) to restricted free agent NT Gabe Watson.

Watson played extensively in 2008, but never passed Bryan Robinson on the depth chart. With few inspiring 3-4 nose tackles in this year's draft, Watson could draw some interest. He'd cost a second-round pick and a contract.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt said NT Gabe Watson would likely push for playing time against the Bills after missing four games with a knee injury.

The Cardinals defense needs all the help it can get after Brett Favre's career day against them Sunday. Watson should improve the run defense and also the pass rush by generating additional push up the middle.

Cardinals NT Gabe Watson (knee) has resumed practicing fully.

Arizona allowed opponents to average 4.1 yards a carry with Watson out the first two weeks. He's central to the team's run defense, which could be a top 12 or 10 unit with Watson back. The Cards head to Washington this week.

Cardinals NT Gabe Watson (knee) is not expected to play in Week 2.

Alan Branch (knee, probable) is back, but the Cards remain at a loss without their best interior run plugger. Frank Gore averaged 6.9 yards a carry with a TD while Watson was sidelined in Week 1. Arizona hosts Miami this week.
