Eagles ILB DeMeco Ryans insists he's a fit for new coach Chip Kelly's 3-4 defense.
"It's a big perception that DeMeco doesn't fit in the 3-4," Ryans said, talking in the third person. "I played with the Texans in the 3-4 defense when we were the (No. 2) defense in the league. If I didn't fit in there, we wouldn't have been that highly ranked. It's all about being versatile." Ryans is half right, but he came off the field for a majority passing downs in 2011, playing just 58.4 percent of the Texans' defensive snaps. He played 99.7 percent for the Eagles last season. For his part, Kelly is confident Ryans will be a fit, but he'll likely be playing fewer snaps. Apr 5 - 10:31 AM

Coach Chip Kelly was "effusive" in his praise of ILB DeMeco Ryans at the Combine, making it clear Ryans has a future with the Eagles.

Ryans is not considered the best 3-4 defender in some circles and the Eagles are transitioning to a 3-4, but Kelly is confident he'll make it work. Ryans, 28, finished his first season in Philadelphia with 113 tackles, one sack, and one interception. Pro Football Focus graded Ryans as a top-20 inside linebacker.

The Philadelphia Inquirer calls MLB DeMeco Ryans one of the few players "who fit" new DC Billy Davis' "bill."

Davis is looking for aggressive, physical defenders that aren't afraid to hit. He's not going to find many of those on the Eagles, but he sounds prepared to roll with Ryans as a core piece at inside linebacker. The former Texan is a good bet to eclipse 100 tackles once again in 2013 despite no longer running as well as he used to.

DeMeco Ryans played on 60-of-62 snaps in Sunday's win over the Browns.

It's notable because Andy Reid previously said that Ryans would not be a three-down linebacker. But the ex-Texan handled himself well against the pass and stayed on the field in passing situations. Ryans tied for the team lead with five tackles.

Eagles MLB DeMeco Ryans will not play a three-down role on Sunday against the Browns.

Coach Andy Reid confirmed Friday that he will be shuffling his linebackers depending on the package. Ryans, Mychal Kendricks, Akeem Jordan, Brian Rolle, and Casey Matthews all could see the field at various points on Sunday. This is a huge blow to Ryans' IDP value. He's barely an LB3 option this week.

Eagles MLB DeMeco Ryans is in danger of losing snaps to Jamar Chaney in nickel packages.

Ryans stayed on the field in nickel during OTAs, mini-camps, training camp and the preseason, but he looked a step slow throughout August. On Thursday, players indicated that Chaney had joined rookie Mychal Kendricks in certain nickel packages. The Eagles were in the nickel for just under 50 percent of their snaps last season. Ryans is leaking IDP value.

Eagles coach Andy Reid envisions new MLB DeMeco Ryans as a three-down player.

Ryans lost his job in passing downs in Houston last year, but considering the Eagles' recent struggles at the position and investment in Ryans, this is hardly a surprise. Expected to flourish in his return to a 4-3 scheme, Ryans fills Philadelphia's need for a run-stopping force up the middle. Reid also insists Ryans has a "pretty good feel" for the nickel. As long as his Achilles' holds up, Ryans will be a three-down tackling machine.

Eagles acquired MLB DeMeco Ryans from the Texans in exchange for a 2012 fourth-round pick.

The teams will also exchange third-round picks, with the Eagles moving back 12 spots. A Pro Bowl middle linebacker early in his career, Ryans wasn't was as suited to the weak-side interior in Wade Phillips 3-4 scheme. After a slow start in returning from Achilles surgery, Ryans came on stronger late in the season. He fills a major need in Philadelphia, where Andy Reid's squad has long been in need of a three-down tackling machine in the middle. Jamar Chaney (neck surgery) will move back outside. Considering Ryans $5.9 million salary, the Texans' haul was as much as could reasonably be expected.

The Texans reportedly may ask ILB DeMeco Ryans to take a pay cut in order to lower his $5.9 million 2012 base salary.

Coming off a torn Achilles' tendon, Ryans saw action only on early downs in 2011 and played 58.4 percent of Houston's defensive snaps, according to Pro Football Focus. The Texans want Darryl Sharpton to play more snaps going forward, and they'll come at the expense of Ryans as opposed to fellow ILB Brian Cushing.

Coach Gary Kubiak said ILB DeMeco Ryans' snaps have been down because he doesn't play in dime packages.

Brian Cushing is the Texans' dime linebacker. Still, Kubiak did cite Ryans' Achilles, elbow and hamstring issues as a factor. Ryans has just 25 tackles and no sacks through seven games, allowing IDP owners to safely move on.

Texans ILB DeMeco Ryans (elbow) will start in Week 1 despite missing the final three preseason games.

Ryans' elbow was just bruised. Although he missed a ton of practice time in Wade Phillips' new defense, Ryans says he is fully versed in the 3-4 scheme. In fantasy, the Texans are a major sleeper defense this year and have a plus matchup in Week 1 if Peyton Manning (neck) is out.

Texans ILB DeMeco Ryans described his elbow injury as a "deep bruise" and fully plans to start in Week 1.

Ryans has been held out of recent preseason action, but he'll be fine by the opener. "I'm confident that I'll be out there," he promised. "I'll be ready to go." Coming off Achilles' surgery, Ryans called the elbow problem a "blessing in disguise" because it's allowed him to complete his rehab of the heel.

Texans ILB DeMeco Ryans (elbow) is inactive for Saturday's preseason game.

This will be the second straight game Ryans has missed after injuring himself in the Texans' preseason opener. Not ideal, but staying off his feet might not be the worst thing for a player coming back from a torn Achilles' tendon.

Texans ILB DeMeco Ryans tweeted Tuesday that he's received medical clearance to return from his torn left Achilles' tendon.

"God is great!" Ryan tweeted. "Just left the doctor, and I'm all cleared to play this year!!" As expected, Ryans will be ready for training camp. The 27-year-old linebacker has averaged over six tackles per game through five NFL seasons. We suspect his numbers will take a bit of a hit as Brian Cushing is more "featured" in Houston's new 3-4 defense under Wade Phillips.

Texans ILB DeMeco Ryans (Achilles' surgery) is doing some "running and covering" at the team's latest round of player-only minicamps.

Ryans is still unable to run full speed, but the fact that he's participated in so many of the workouts is a positive. Most signs still point to Ryans being ready for training camp. He's now over eight months removed from surgery.
