49ers promoted quality control coach DeMeco Ryans to ILBs coach.
He replaces Ken Norton, who was hired earlier this offseason only to quickly turn around and accept the Seahawks' DC job. Ryans started his coaching career last year and seems to be a quick riser after retiring in 2016. Feb 28 - 12:54 PM

49ers hired former NFL LB DeMeco Ryans as Defensive Quality Control coach.

The 32-year-old never officially retired but was out of the league last season after getting cut by the Eagles. A two-time Pro Bowler and former Defensive Rookie of the Year, Ryans will begin his coaching career under first-time head coach Kyle Shanahan. The Niners also hired John Benton (OL coach), Daniel Bullocks (Assistant DBs), Michael Clay (Strength and Conditioning Assistant), Stan Kwan (Assistant ST), Vince Oghobaase (Assistant DL), Adam Stenavich (Assistant OL), and Bobby Slowik (Quality Control). Slowik spent last season working for Pro Football Focus.

Free agent LB DeMeco Ryans wants to continue his playing career but admits a call may not come.

Ryans, 32 next month, was released by the Eagles back in February and hasn't drawn an ounce of known interest. He also has a pair of ruptured Achilles' on his resume. Ryans can no longer cover or play the run.

Eagles released ILB DeMeco Ryans.

Ryans was entering the final year of his contract and had a $1 million roster bonus due March 11. On top of his $2.5 million salary, the Eagles save $3.5 million against the cap and allow the 10-year veteran to get a jump on the rest of the free-agent class. The Eagles will hand the keys to sophomore Jordan Hicks alongside Kiko Alonso and Mychal Kendricks in new DC Jim Schwartz's 4-3. Going on age 32, Ryans is no longer even a useful two-down run thumper. He lost his cover skills several years back.

Eagles ILB DeMeco Ryans could be a cap cut this offseason.

Ryans is a respected veteran and two-time Pro Bowler, but injuries have limited him the last two seasons. With the Eagles switching to a 4-3 scheme under new DC Jim Schwartz, there is not a starting spot for Ryans, and his $4.5 million cap hit is too much for a backup. Ryans' $2.5 million base salary becomes fully guaranteed March 11. There's a good chance he's off the roster by then.

Eagles ILB DeMeco Ryans exited Week 6 against the Giants with a hamstring injury.

Ryans suffered the injury in the second quarter and did not return. Ryans said after the game he could have come back in, but he would not have been 100 percent. Regarding his availability for Week 7, Ryans said, "We'll see how it goes." Ryans' injury brings even more importance to the recoveries of Mychal Kendricks (hamstring) and Kiko Alonso (knee).

DeMeco Ryans and Jordan Hicks will be the Eagles starting inside linebackers against the Jets.

Kiko Alonso (ACL) and Mychal Kendricks (hamstring) are out for Week 3. Alonso is expected to miss multiple weeks, and may yet opt for surgery that could cost him his second consecutive season. Kendricks will be expected back next week. In the meantime, veteran Ryans and rookie Hicks will man the middle as every-down ‘backers, and offer LB2/3 scoring potential in IDP leagues.

Eagles DC Bill Davis said ILB DeMeco Ryans (Achilles') may not be 100 percent for Week 1.

Ryans admitted in early August he was not quite 100%, and he will be just 10 months removed from tearing his Achilles' when the regular season begins. Achilles' tears are always difficult to come back from, and the 31-year-old Ryans may never get back to his pre-injury form. Ryans' struggles to recover could explain why the Eagles extended Mychal Kendricks on Monday.

Eagles ILB DeMeco Ryans (Achilles) will not play in the preseason opener.

The Eagles are taking a cautious approach with Ryans coming off his torn Achilles. ILB Mychal Kendricks will also be held out.

Eagles ILB DeMeco Ryans (Achilles') admitted he's not quite 100 percent yet.

Ryans, 31, is just nine months removed from an Achilles' tear. "Still need to gain a little bit of strength, a little bit of explosiveness. Once I do that, I'll be ready," he said. We'd hesitate to assume Ryans will ever get back to where he was, which is probably why Chip Kelly hasn't traded Mychal Kendricks.

Eagles ILB DeMeco Ryans (Achilles') has been limited in OTAs.

It's not unexpected, as Ryans is only seven months removed from going down. He remains on pace for training camp.

Eagles ILB DeMeco Ryans (Achilles') says he'll "definitely be back for the start of training camp."

"(It's) going great," Ryans said of his rehab. The Eagles obviously agree, otherwise they wouldn't have signed Ryans to a one-year extension last month. The extension is a sign the Eagles view the 31-year-old (in July) Ryans as a starter even though Mychal Kendricks and Kiko Alonso are both in the mix at inside linebacker.

Eagles signed ILB DeMeco Ryans to a one-year extension through 2016.

The deal lowers Ryans' cap number and will pay him $7.5 million over the next two years. It includes $6.25 million guaranteed. Recovering from a torn Achilles' tendon, Ryans had been going into the final year of his contract. The two-year commitment by Philadelphia strongly suggests coach Chip Kelly is counting on Ryans to immediately return to form despite the severe 2014 injury. There is speculation the Eagles will now trade Mychal Kendricks, and start Ryans next to Kiko Alonso at inside linebacker.

Eagles GM/coach Chip Kelly expects ILB DeMeco Ryans back with the team for 2015.

Coming off a torn Achilles' tendon, Ryans' Eagles future was cast into doubt after the team acquired Kiko Alonso, but Alonso is also coming off major injury. It wouldn't be the worst idea to keep Ryans behind Alonso and Mychal Kendricks, though his $6.9 million salary-cap number needs to be lowered. As of the moment, Ryans is questionable for training camp.

The Philadelphia Daily News' Paul Domowitch believes Eagles ILB DeMeco Ryans is a candidate for a contract extension.

Going on 31, Ryans counts $6.9 million against the salary cap in the final year of his deal. A two-year extension that lowers his cap number this year and offers Ryans some security could work for both sides. Ryans is questionable for training camp after tearing his Achilles' tendon early in November.
