Bears signed TE Leonard Pope, formerly of the Steelers.
Pope, 30, adds experience behind Martellus Bennett, where the Bears were lacking with Fendi Onobun, Kyle Adams, and Steve Maneri rounding out the depth chart. Pope had three catches in Pittsburgh last year. He's a blocker. Fri, Aug 2, 2013 05:26:00 PM

Date:

Free agent TE Leonard Pope is participating in Bears training camp on a tryout basis.

Pope, 30 next month, hasn't generated any known interest since becoming a free agent in March. He's nothing more than a blocker and red-zone threat.

Steelers signed TE Leonard Pope to a one-year contract.

Wherever Todd Haley lands, Pope is sure to follow. The two have been together in Arizona, Kansas City, and now Pittsburgh. Pope will add veteran depth behind Heath Miller with Weslye Saunders suspended four games. Despite impressive measurables, Pope has never cleared 250 yards in six NFL seasons.

Free agent TE Leonard Pope will visit the Steelers Tuesday.

One of the more experienced players remaining in a barren tight end market, Pope caught a career high 24 passes for 247 yards in Kansas City last season. A poor blocker, he'd provide pass-catching depth behind Heath Miller in Pittsburgh.

Leonard Pope had three receptions for 26 yards against the Patriots in Week 11.

Sometimes a new rookie quarterback can cause a tight end to get more looks, and together Pope and Jake O'Connell (three catches, 22 yards) were targeted 10 times. We'll let you know if one of the mediocre duo emerges, but we won't be holding our breath.

Leonard Pope caught three passes for 32 yards with a touchdown in Sunday's loss to the Chargers.

Pope was playing with Tony Moeaki (knee) out for the year and Anthony Becht leaving early today. He surely infuriated coach Todd Haley by taking his helmet off after the touchdown, earning a 15-yard penalty. Pope is a backup-caliber talent at best and not on the fantasy radar.

Chiefs re-signed TE Leonard Pope.

Pope, 28 in September, made news this offseason for saving a 6-year-old boy from drowning at a pool party. Unfortunately, he's not a very good player. Pope caught 10 passes for just 76 yards in 16 games last season, also grading out very poorly as a blocker per Pro Football Focus. He'll try to win a backup job behind emerging second-year tight end Tony Moeaki.

Free agent TE Leonard Pope saved 6-year-old boy Bryson Moore from drowning at a pool party over the weekend.

"All of a sudden, I saw Bryson going down in the water and I started screaming," said the boy's mother. "Leonard was inside, and he came out of nowhere and dove into the water without any hesitation, cell phone in his pocket and all. He saved my son’s life." Pope was allegedly the only person at the pool party who knew how to swim. The 6-year-old boy is now okay.

Leonard Pope caught two passes for 26 yards and a touchdown against the Steelers in Week 11.

Pope caught a 21-yard touchdown pass to start the Chiefs' comeback. While he seems to overtaken Sean Ryan as the main tight end, he's not going to be a fantasy option.

Chiefs signed TE Leonard Pope, formerly of the Cardinals.

Pope will be re-united with Todd Haley. While his receiving potential is higher than any tight end currently on the roster, his poor blocking will keep him from seeing significant playing time.

In addition to ex-Patriot Alex Smith, the Giants worked out free agent TE Leonard Pope on Monday.

A career underachiever, Pope is an option to replace Darcy Johnson if Johnson starts the season slowly. The Giants don't seem to be rushing to use third-round pick Travis Beckum, who's still honing his blocking technique.

Cardinals released TE Leonard Pope.

The 2006 third-rounder has the look of a prototypical tight end, but he just never developed as a blocker. It's telling that Dominique Byrd made the final cut ahead of Pope. The Saints and the Bengals could come calling.

Cardinals tight end Leonard Pope played behind Stephen Spach and Ben Patrick in the team's preseason opener.

Pope was also terrible, dropping a TD from Matt Leinart. It's possible Pope will be on the roster bubble when Patrick's four-game suspension ends.

The Cardinals have four tight ends that could start on opening day, even though Leonard Pope is currently No. 1 on the depth chart.

They actually have five tight ends in camp, but Ben Patrick is suspended for the first four games of the season. When Patrick gets back he has the best chance for fantasy value, but it's unlikely any of them will be worth owning at any point. The Cards have the most tight end-unfriendly offense in the league.

Cardinals signed restricted free agent Leonard Pope to a one-year, $1.01 million contract.

Pope, the No. 72 overall pick in 2006, still hasn't developed as a blocker and reached a new low last season with just nine catches in 13 games after scoring five touchdowns in his second year. Pope isn't even certain to make the Cardinals, especially if they draft a tight end high in April.
