Saints released/failed physical DT Brodrick Bunkley.
Bunkley tore his quad in late November, and is apparently still recovering. Bunkley was viewed as a candidate for release all offseason, but appeared to save his roster spot when he agreed to a pay cut in March. Bunkley is a helpful run stuffer when healthy, but turns 32 in November. He'll have to prove he's back to full health before getting a workout elsewhere. Jul 28 - 4:59 PM

Saints DT Brodrick Bunkley has agreed to a pay cut.

An able run stuffer when healthy, Bunkley tore his quadriceps tendon in Week 12 last year. He's missed 10 games in three seasons with the Saints. Cutting him would have cleared $2.9 million in salary cap space, but New Orleans will retain the 31-year-old instead, ideally as a rotational player.

ESPN Saints reporter Mike Triplett expects the team to release NT Brodrick Bunkley.

Bunkley has missed 10 games in his three seasons with the Saints, and had his 2014 campaign was cut short in Week 12 with a torn quad. The Saints have the worst cap situation in the league and need to free up money ahead of March 10. Cutting 31-year-old Bunkley would clear $2.9 million off the books.

Saints NT Brodrick Bunkley exited Week 12 against the Ravens with a leg injury.

He's being called questionable to return, but we doubt Bunkley comes back. He was hurt while engaged with Ravens LG Kelechi Osemele on a first-quarter run play. Saints trainers had to help Bunkley off the field. He couldn't put any weight on the leg. Tyrunn Walker is in the game at nose tackle.

Saints NT Brodrick Bunkley has agreed to a pay cut, trimming his 2014 salary from $4.4 million to $1.3 million.

Bunkley was previously scheduled to count $6.1 million against the cap. His 2015 and 2016 salaries remain at $4.4 million. Bunkley played just over 21 snaps per game last season, and they were largely empty ones. John Jenkins is the future at nose tackle for the Saints. Bunkley is entering his age-31 season.

Brodrick Bunkley is scheduled to cost $6.1 million against the 2014 salary cap.

Bunkley averaged just 21.1 snaps per day in his 12 appearances this season, losing playing time at nose tackle to rookie John Jenkins. Bunkley graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 41 NT/DT among 69 qualifiers, hurrying the quarterback just three times. The Saints will almost certainly ask him to take a major pay cut or move along.

The Saints just keep taking hits on defense. OLBs Will Smith and Victor Butler and LE Kenyon Coleman have already been lost for the season. ILB Jonathan Vilma is on short-term injured reserve.

Brodrick Bunkley is practicing as the Saints' first-team nose tackle in training camp.

Akiem Hicks saw early-camp reps on the nose, but will be needed to play full-time end with Kenyon Coleman done for the year. Rookie John Jenkins is Bunkley's backup. Bunkley is undersized for 3-4 nose at 6-foot-2, 306, but DC Rob Ryan has a history with smallish nose tackles. The Saints' defense remains one to target in fantasy matchups after losing Coleman and top OLB Victor Butler.

The Saints have reworked DT Brodrick Bunkley's contract, dropping his 2013 base salary from $3.7 million to $750,000.

In exchange, the Saints cut a $2.95 million check for Bunkley in the form of a "signing" bonus. Previously scheduled to count $4.7 million versus the cap, Bunkley's cap number dipped to $2.5 million. Bunkley is an undersized, 6-foot-2, 306-pound nose tackle, but Rob Ryan isn't afraid to use smaller guys on the nose in his 3-4. Bunkley will likely compete to retain his starting job.

Saints signed DT Brodrick Bunkley to a five-year, $25 million contract with $9 million guaranteed.

With GM Mickey Loomis' suspension not yet implemented, it's business as usual in the Saints' front office as the team stays the course amid bounty scandal discipline. The Broncos were making a "hard" push to re-sign Bunkley as of Tuesday, but the Saints apparently beat Denver's offer. Bunkley has only six sacks in six seasons, but he is an effective one-gap, 4-3 nose tackle. He projects as an upgrade on outgoing Shaun Rogers and Aubrayo Franklin.
