Browns ILB D'Qwell Jackson's $3.6 million base salary for 2013 became fully guaranteed when he was kept on the roster as of Thursday.
The Browns could've gotten out of Jackson's deal by releasing him before Thursday, but they're counting on him to be an interior linchpin for their new 3-4 defense under Ray Horton. Although Jackson has struggled in the 3-4 before, his game is not entirely dissimilar from Cardinals ILB Daryl Washington's. Washington emerged as a high-impact player in Horton's scheme with Arizona. Feb 8 - 2:59 PM

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer and FOX Sports' Peter Schrager, the Browns will switch to a 3-4 "attack" defense under new head coach Rob Chudzinski.

"Trust me on the 3-4," tweeted Schrager. In other words, Dick Jauron and his 4-3 scheme are gone. It sounds like a deeply-rooted philosophical stance from Chud, even if the Browns' defensive personnel is ill-suited to the switch. The values of MLB D'Qwell Jackson, NT Phil Taylor and DT Ahtyba Rubin all go down significantly in a 3-4 scheme. How quickly the change is implemented may depend on Chud's pick for defensive coordinator.

Browns MLB D'Qwell Jackson (toe, calf) is listed as questionable for Week 9.

Jackson had been dealing with a foot/toe issues, and the calf injury was added on Saturday. Jackson has 60 total tackles (30 solo) on the season, and just recorded his second double-digit tackle performance of the season in the Browns' Week 8 win over the Chargers.

Browns MLB D'Qwell Jackson (concussion) is listed as probable for Week 6 and practiced fully on Friday.

Similar to Robert Griffin III in Washington, Jackson made a fast recovery from last week's concussion and is fully expected to play in Week 6 against the Bengals. It's good news for a Browns run defense that got ripped up without Jackson and NT Ahtyba Rubin in Week 5. Rubin (calf) is questionable this week.

Browns MLB D'Qwell Jackson (concussion) returned to practice Thursday.

Jackson has at least been cleared for physical activity and is now on track to play against the Bengals Sunday. It's big news for the Browns, who looked lost after the heart and soul of their defense left last week. Jackson has 31 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions and three pass breakups through five weeks.

Browns MLB D'Qwell Jackson (concussion) did not practice Wednesday.

Jackson is in real doubt for this week's game against the Bengals. If he can't go, undrafted rookie L.J. Fort would slide in at middle linebacker and set up a dreamy matchup for BenJarvus Green-Ellis. Ahmad Bradshaw shredded the Browns' defense after Jackson left last week.

The Akron Beacon-Journal confirms that MLB D'Qwell Jackson suffered a concussion late in the second quarter of Week 5.

The Browns proceeded to get destroyed by Ahmad Bradshaw and David Wilson in the final two quarters. "DQ is the middle of our defense, so it was hard missing him," Browns SS T.J. Ward said. "Even then we had opportunities to get off the field and we should have, but we didn’t." Jackson's status is uncertain for Week 6. Cincinnati's running game should be licking its chops.

Browns ILB D'Qwell Jackson is done for the remainder of Week 5 due to a head injury.

Because Jackson was ruled out for the rest of the game so quickly, it's fair to guess that he was concussed. The Browns have inserted undrafted rookie L.J. Fort into the lineup. We'll have updates on Jackson during the coming week.

Browns MLB D'Qwell Jackson (back) participated in OTAs on Tuesday.

The Browns' $42.5 million man required treatment on Monday, but appeared no worse for the wear on Tuesday. The back shouldn't be an issue going forward.

Browns MLB D'Qwell Jackson is dealing with a stiff back.

He received treatment on Monday and could practice as soon as Tuesday. Fresh off signing a five-year, $42.5 million contract, the injury appears to be of no real concern to the Browns. Jackson is a top-three IDP linebacker this season.

The first two seasons on MLB D'Qwell Jackson's new five-year, $42.5 million contract are essentially fully guaranteed.

He got $16.8 million in the first two years, including a $7 million signing bonus and fully guaranteed salaries of $3.4 million (2012) and $3.6 million (2013). Jackson's guarantees, aside from one small injury-only "guarantee" on his 2014 salary, stop after the first two seasons, and he's due a third-year non-guaranteed $4 million roster bonus. That's when the NFL's new TV money kicks in, but the Browns can get out of the contract easily after two years.

Browns re-signed MLB D'Qwell Jackson to a five-year contract.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Jackson will receive $42.5 million, including $19 million in guarantees and bonuses. It's a staggering sum for a player who missed 26 games due to injury in 2009-10. The Browns likely have an out clause in the form a roster bonus within the next two years. The 28-year-old racked up 158 tackles last season as a Comeback Player of the Year candidate anchoring Dick Jauron's 4-3 defense. The Browns are still willing to use the franchise tag, with Phil Dawson as a likelier candidate than Peyton Hillis.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, free agent MLB D'Qwell Jackson had a "very positive meeting" with the Browns at the NFL Combine regarding a multi-year contract.

"We're working really hard on this and hopefully we can get something done,'' agent Brian Mackler said. "We're working hard on it every day.'' Mackler met with Browns chief negotiator Matt Thomas on Friday and has until March 5 to reach a long-term deal with the Browns. If nothing gets done by that date, a source confirmed that the Browns will franchise Jackson.

Beat writer Scott Petrak confirms the Browns opened contract talks with free agent MLB D'Qwell Jackson last week.

Of the Browns' own free agents, Jackson has been identified as the top priority. The front office would like to lock him into a long-term deal before the franchise tag deadline in early March, though that's easier said than done on a five-year asking price.
Wed, Feb 22, 2012 12:55:00 PM

Free agent MLB D'Qwell Jackson is reportedly seeking a five-year contract.

This could explain why the Browns are leaning toward making the questionable decision of franchise tagging Jackson. Although Jackson led the AFC in tackles in 2011, he has no chance of landing a long-term commitment entering his age-29 campaign after missing a combined 26 games with injury in 2009-10.
