49ers coach Jim Tomsula hasn't considered moving Ahmad Brooks to inside linebacker.
The Niners are searching high and low for players to replace Patrick Willis and Chris Borland at inside linebacker. Brooks entered the league as an inside linebacker with Cincinnati but hasn't lined up there since joining the 49ers in 2008. With Brooks likely to stay on the outside, Navorro Bowman and Michael Wilhoite could open the year as San Francisco's starting inside linebackers. Mar 23 - 12:37 PM

49ers GM Trent Baalke promised Wednesday that OLB Ahmad Brooks will be on the 2015 roster.

Put simply, they need him. Aldon Smith is an off-field headache, and Aaron Lynch isn't yet ready for a full-time role, though he probably will be soon. 31 years old now, Brooks was benched for disciplinary reasons late last season and has a tumultuous history with new coach Jim Tomsula. Brooks still registered six sacks across just 13 games while playing passable run defense.

The Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows considers it "more likely" the 49ers release OLB Ahmad Brooks than Aldon Smith.

The 49ers have one of the worst cap situations in the league, as they're currently projected to be about $6 million over the expected $142 million threshold. Brooks carries a $7.055 million cap hit, but the 49ers would clear just $1.5 million by releasing him. Cutting Smith would save $9.754 million. Second-year OLB Aaron Lynch is expected to be a starter after a strong rookie season.

The 49ers are considered "not likely" to retain OLB Ahmad Brooks for 2015.

Brooks is owed $7.3 million in salary and bonuses, and endured more disciplinary problems during the 2014 season. New Redskins GM Scot McCloughan acquired Brooks as a waiver claim in 2008. Washington seems likely to let go of free agent Brian Orakpo, perhaps opening a job for Brooks opposite Ryan Kerrigan.

49ers OLB Ahmad Brooks is expected to return to the starting lineup against the Seahawks after being benched for disciplinary reasons in Week 14.

"It was difficult to do, but it was an easy decision," DC Vic Fangio said of Brooks' benching on Thursday. "He missed an entire meeting on Tuesday and was 20 minutes late on Wednesday." Brooks is having a bizarre season off the field, and hasn't been terribly effective on it. Going on 31, Brooks is due a non-guaranteed $6 million in 2015.

49ers OLB Ahmad Brooks did not play in Sunday's Week 14 loss at Oakland after missing a defensive meeting Tuesday.

Brooks' rocky season continues. Just a couple weeks after quitting on the team during a game because of playing-time reduction, he now gets back into the doghouse. "They have their plan of what they want to do and all I can do as a player is just abide by the rules," Brooks said Sunday. "No, I do not agree. I'm just a player, I'm just a number, you know what I mean?" Brooks signed a six-year, $37M contract with the 49ers in February of 2012.

49ers OLB Ahmad Brooks apologized for lashing out at DL coach Jim Tomsula during Sunday's win over the Giants.

Frustrated with his playing time, Brooks took it out on Tomsula and ended up quitting on the 49ers at the Meadowlands. He's since apologized and been given a reprieve for his actions, unlike Ben Tate and LeGarrette Blount. Brooks will move forward as part of a fearsome three-man pass-rushing rotation with Aldon Smith and Aaron Lynch.

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh says "everything is worked out" with OLB Ahmad Brooks, and that Brooks will play in Week 12.

Pouting about being a part of a rotation, Brooks pulled himself out of Sunday's win over the Giants. Tensions have apparently been smoothed, however. Brooks is still going to see heavy playing time. He has 20 tackles and four sacks this season, and started 10-of-10 games.

A source tells FOX Sports that 49ers OLB Ahmad Brooks benched himself during Sunday's win over the Giants.

Brooks believed he should be playing every snap and didn't want to be part of a rotation. So when he was rotated out in favor of Aldon Smith and Aaron Lynch, he went to the bench and took his cleats off. Just a few weeks ago, FOX reported that Brooks was nearly dealt to the Browns. The 30-year-old, one-time Pro Bowler had four sacks and 20 tackles in the first nine games of the year.

Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reports the 49ers were close to dealing OLB Ahmad Brooks to the Browns before the trade deadline.

With Aldon Smith due back from suspension soon and rookie Aaron Lynch playing well, the 49ers may view the 30-year-old Brooks as expendable. San Francisco could save $4.1 million against the 2015 salary cap by cutting Brooks following the season. Brooks has three sacks and five hurries in 364 defensive snaps this season.

49ers OLB Ahmad Brooks has restructured his contract.

The specifics are unknown, but Brooks reportedly shed over $2 million off his 2014 cap number. We'd imagine a good chunk of his $4.25 million salary has been converted into a bonus that can be prorated over the final four years of his deal. Brooks has started every game of the Jim Harbaugh era in San Francisco.

49ers OLB Ahmad Brooks (illness) returned to practice Thursday.

Brooks didn't practice Wednesday, but was cleared to participate in Thursday's walk-through. He's in no danger of missing Sunday's NFC Championship Game.

The league is still reviewing 49ers OLB Ahmad Brooks' alleged assault of teammate Lamar Divens even though the Santa Clara DA's office has decided not to pursue charges.

It's doubtful Brooks will face punishment, but it wouldn't be stunning if an increasingly-image conscious NFL imposed a fine or one-game suspension. The former is much more likely than the latter.

The Santa Clara District Attorney's office has decided not to pursue assault charges against 49ers OLB Ahmad Brooks.

Brooks allegedly hit teammate Lamar Divens repeatedly over the head with a beer bottle in a fit of rage while drunk back on June 8. Divens initially wanted to press charges, but the two later resolved the matter and figured it was best to squash it. Then, the Santa Clara DA stepped in and reviewed the case. Charges will not be filed, and this should be the last we hear of the incident.
