Patriots re-signed LB Bobby Carpenter.

Carpenter was released at final cuts by the Pats. He's back now thanks to Dont'a Hightower's hamstring issue.

The Chiefs worked out free agent LBs Bobby Carpenter and Bryan Kehl.

Both players were cut loose at final cuts last week. Neither Carpenter nor Kehl would offer much outside of special teams and passing situations, but the Chiefs' banged-up linebacker corps could use a veteran boost.

Patriots released LB Bobby Carpenter.

The Patriots' purge of veterans they signed in the offseason continues unabated. Carpenter's cut comes as a big surprise, as he was projected in most corners to be the Pats' top reserve linebacker. Carpenter has been an ineffective player for years, however, and holds little value outside of coverage and special teams. His release means more snaps for Tracy White and Mike Rivera.

The Boston Herald believes LB Bobby Carpenter will have to fight with Jeff Tarpinian and Tracy White for a roster spot.

Beat writer Jeff Howe admits it's "become clear" that Carpenter has a supporter in coach Bill Belichick, but believes at least one of Carpenter, Tarpinian and White won't make the 53-man roster. Carpenter was talked up as a potential starter in Detroit last season before ultimately playing just 261 snaps. He holds little value outside of coverage.

Bobby Carpenter is in the mix for the Patriots' starting strong-side linebacker job.

Carpenter has seen "a lot of playing time" during the offseason practices and is competing with Dont'a Hightower for a starting gig. With Rob Ninkovich also in the mix, the better bet is for Carpenter to work as a backup at both outside positions and do his damage in coverage in nickel formations.

Patriots signed LB Bobby Carpenter, formerly of the Lions.

The 2006 first-rounder was primarily a special teamer in Detroit, playing less than a quarter of the defensive snaps last season. The six-year veteran will add depth at linebacker for the Patriots. His father, Rob, played under Bill Belichick with the Giants in the 1980s.

Lions re-signed LB Bobby Carpenter.

The Lions really made a concerted effort to improve their linebacker corps this offseason. By signing Justin Durant and Stephen Tulloch in free agency while also retaining Carpenter, they are now legitimately deep at the position. Carpenter can back up both outside 'backer spots.

The Lions are "hopeful but not holding their breath" on re-signing LB Bobby Carpenter.

Beat writers talked up Carpenter and Ashlee Palmer as potential starters this offseason, but the Lions front office was aiming much higher with the Justin Durant and Stephen Tulloch signings. Carpenter isn't likely to find a starting opportunity elsewhere.

According to the Detroit News, the Lions expect free agent Bobby Carpenter to compete for a starting outside linebacker job in camp if he's re-signed.

The assumption is that Carpenter will indeed be back with the Lions, who signed him last October despite there being plenty of evidence to suggest he's simply never going to be an effective NFL player. If he somehow earns a starting job, he won't be a factor in IDP leagues.

Lions extended a restricted free agent tender to OLB Bobby Carpenter before the March 3 deadline.

Carpenter is a five-year veteran. The Lions seem to hold him in higher esteem than the rest of the league, so he's returning to Detroit regardless. Depending on the Lions' draft and free agency, Carpenter could end up competing for a starting job.
Thu, Mar 17, 2011 03:30:00 PM

The Detroit News confirms that the Lions do not view Bobby Carpenter as a full-time starter at outside linebacker.

The Lions are well aware of Carpenter's limitations, and it's no coincidence that the 2006 first-round pick has been dumped by three separate teams already. They need to make outside linebacker a priority with Julian Peterson gone and Zach Follett's (neck) career in doubt. Carpenter is an unrestricted free agent and will struggle to find guaranteed money on the open market.

Free agent LB Bobby Carpenter wants to re-sign with the Lions in 2011.

Julian Peterson won't be back and Zach Follett's (neck) football future is in question. Carpenter picked up significant snaps down the stretch in the four-game winning streak, but the Lions need to be aiming much higher at outside linebacker.

Lions signed LB Bobby Carpenter, formerly of the Dolphins.

Carpenter, 27, is now on his fourth NFL team. The Lions are banged up at his position, but "Barbie" won't upgrade their annually flagging run defense.

Dolphins released ILB Bobby Carpenter.

Carpenter was a huge special teams liability and plays with no physicality on defense. He may want to explore other career opportunities at this point.
