Redskins signed SS Donte Whitner to a one-year contract.
Whitner, 31, was released by the Browns in April. He's drawn inquiries from the Rams, Panthers, and Giants, but now finds a home in Washington where he'll reunite with GM Scot McCloughan. Whitner figures to immediately push SS David Bruton for the starting job. Bruton is PFF's No. 79 safety out of 81 qualifiers and is dead last in run support. Whitner is a hard-hitting box safety. Updating an earlier report, the Redskins will not be signing free agent S Donte Whitner.

He worked out for the Redskins but obviously didn't show enough to land a contract. Whitner tweeted that he's been offered contracts by the Panthers and Rams, though it's unclear if he'll be signing with either of those teams.

Free agent S Donte Whitner will work out for the Redskins.

The Redskins could use some help at safety after losing DeAngelo Hall to a torn ACL. Whitner worked out for the Giants last week but nothing came of it. PFF graded Whitner 29th out of 87 qualified safeties in 2015.
Oct 4 - 11:48 AM

The Giants plan to work out free agent S Donte Whitner.

Whiter hasn’t had any interest since late August. Whitner struggled with the Browns last year and turned 31 in July. With Darian Thompson and Nat Berhe sidelined, Whitner would give the Giants a veteran opposite Landon Collins.
Sep 30 - 7:10 PM

Free agent S Donte Whitner will visit the Panthers on Friday.

It could be an indication the Panthers aren't sold on third-year pro Tre Boston opposite FS Kurt Coleman. Whitner was cut by the rebuilding Browns in April, but had a passable 2015. Whitner's lone previous visit came in April to the Rams, but he's the kind of player who could get a big boost from the Panthers' DB-friendly scheme. He can't be that much worse than Roman Harper.
Aug 25 - 6:20 PM

Bengals LB Karlos Dansby said he's tried recruiting free agent SS Donte Whitner to sign with Cincinnati.

Whitner and Dansby were teammates in Cleveland the previous two seasons before both were released in the offseason. Dansby quickly landed on his feet with the division-rival Bengals, but Whitner has only visited the Rams. Word out of L.A. was Whitner was asking for too much money at the time. The Bengals are currently content with George Iloka and Shawn Williams at safety.
Jun 22 - 12:00 PM

ESPN Rams reporter Nick Wagoner reports Los Angeles is "hoping" to sign free agent SS Donte Whitner, but the team doesn't like his current price tag.

The Rams are the only team Whitner has visited in the 26 days he's been on the open market. L.A. has a gaping hole next to T.J. McDonald at safety, but Whitner is holding out for more than a million or so bucks. After the draft, Whitner, and plenty of other veterans, should be able to find a landing spot.
Apr 28 - 6:03 PM

Free agent SS Donte Whitner is visiting the Rams.

Whitner is coming off a solid 2015 campaign, earning PFF's No. 28 safety grade among 88 qualifiers. He has recorded just one interception over the past two seasons, however, and his once-vaunted run defense has begun to decline. The Rams need a safety after losing Rodney McLeod to Philly, though McLeod and Whitner couldn't be more different types of players. Los Angeles might move T.J. McDonald to free safety if Whitner is signed.
Apr 10 - 2:06 PM

Browns released SS Donte Whitner.

The move saves Cleveland $3.95 million, but leaves $4.5 million in dead money. Whitner is coming off a solid year, posting 81 tackles in 14 games and grading as PFF's No. 24 safety. The Browns are cleaning house in their secondary, cutting Whitner and failing to re-sign Tashaun Gipson. Entering his age-31 season, Whitner won't struggle for interest as the top available safety behind Reggie Nelson.
Apr 2 - 8:09 PM

Browns SS Donte Whitner (concussion) is not expected to play in Thursday night's Week 9 game against the Bengals.

The Browns will also be without top CB Joe Haden (concussion). While Haden's absence upgrades the fantasy matchup for A.J. Green, Whitner's loss will be felt more versus the run.

Browns SS Donte Whitner exited Week 8 against the Cardinals with a concussion.

He's done for the day. Johnson Bademosi is in the game in Whitner's place. Top CB Joe Haden also left early with a concussion and is out for the rest of the game.

Browns SS Donte Whitner has opted against changing his last name to "Hitner."

It's a slow news day to say the least. Having to change his name on car titles, mortgages, and other legal documents is the reason Whitner provided for sticking to his birth name. "All for one letter change?" Whitner said. "I'd rather not." Hitner or not, he'll still be an intimidating presence on the back end.

Browns signed SS Donte Whitner to a four-year, $28 million contract.

The Browns replace T.J. Ward with Whitner, a two-time Pro Bowler and a true intimidator over the middle. He was ProFootballFocus' No. 6 safety in the league last season. With Joe Haden and rumors of a Darrelle Revis pursuit, the Browns secondary is looking fearsome.
Tue, Mar 11, 2014 04:07:00 PM's Aditi Kinkhabwala reports the Browns are "getting close" with free agents Donte Whitner and Arthur Moats.

Whitner appears to be the Browns' top target, while Moats would be following his Bills DC Mike Pettine to Cleveland. Deals will likely be wrapped up shortly after 4ET.
Tue, Mar 11, 2014 11:51:00 AM

Dustin Fox of the Browns Radio Network reports free agent SS Donte Whitner is "likely headed" to Cleveland "when the signing period begins."

The signing period begins Tuesday at 4PM ET. The Cleveland Plain Dealer previously reported the Browns were "very serious" about signing Whitner, who played his college ball at Ohio State and would replace free agent T.J. Ward.
