Ex-Texans and Bears S Danieal Manning has announced his retirement after nine years in the league.
The No. 42 overall pick of the 2006 draft by Chicago, Manning made 96 career starts. Just five of those came in 2014, however, where Manning played 591 snaps for Bill O'Brien's Texans. Now 32, Manning tried to make the Bengals this summer, but was let go at final cuts. He returns to Houston, where he started the first six games last season before breaking his leg. He should be the first man up behind D.J. Swearinger and Kendrick Lewis, and perhaps even push for Lewis' starting gig at free safety.

Coming back from a broken leg, Manning was healthy this summer, but apparently ineffective. He turned 32 earlier this month. Manning is unlikely to start getting calls before teams have in-season depth issues.

Manning fractured his right fibula in Week 6 and spent the remainder of the season on injured reserve. He's been doing on-field work the past two weeks and expects to be ready for OTAs. Manning will be the No. 3 safety in Cincinnati and CBs coach Vance Joseph talked Manning up as a potential slot corner.

Bengals agreed to terms with S Danieal Manning on a one-year contract.

Manning declined to take a pay cut from the Texans, so he was cut on Monday. Just three days later, he lands in a spot where he'll be a third safety behind Reggie Nelson and George Iloka while also getting some slot corner reps. Manning will turn 31 in August and is coming off a fractured leg, but brings versatile upside when healthy. The Chiefs were also interested.

The Colts are not currently interested in free agent S Danieal Manning.

Indy has a hole at free safety after losing Antoine Bethea to the 49ers in free agency. But for now, it looks like they'll go the value route with in-house options Delano Howell and Sergio Brown competing with a draft pick. Manning had visits with the Bengals and Chiefs this week.

That's if he escapes his Wednesday visit with the Bengals without a contract. The Chiefs are in the market for a safety next to Eric Berry after letting Kendrick Lewis walk in free agency to the Texans. Manning will turn 31 in August.

The Bengals could look at Manning to fill the old Chris Crocker role as a third safety and possible reserve slot corner. Cincinnati's starting safeties, Reggie Nelson and George Iloka, are both coming off solid 2013 seasons. Manning hasn't had a standout year since 2011, but has been limited by injuries.

An erroneous report last week claimed Manning reworked his contract. He wouldn't reduce his $4.5 million base salary, so Houston cut ties. Going on 32 and coming off a fractured right fibula, Manning was already not assured of a return. We suspect Houston's Week 1 starting safeties will be FS Chris Clemons and SS D.J. Swearinger, with ex-Chiefs FS Kendrick Lewis in the third-safety role.

Manning was set to count $6 million against the cap and was mentioned as a possible cut. It's unclear if he restructured his deal or took a pay cut, but it's likely the latter considering Manning only has one year left on his deal. He'll compete with Shiloh Keo and D.J. Swearinger for safety duties and play special teams.

The Houston Chronicle believes Texans S Danieal Manning could be a salary cap casualty.

Manning has a $6 million cap number in the final year of his deal. He ended the season on injured reserve with a fractured right fibula. Shiloh Keo and D.J. Swearinger filled in decently at safety after Manning was shelved and Ed Reed was released. Keo and Swearinger could be the 2014 starting duo. Manning will turn 32 before the start of the 2014 season.

Manning suffered a hairline fracture in last Sunday's loss to the Rams. He was given a 6-8 week recovery timetable, but the Texans are just shelving Manning for the season. Shiloh Keo will fill in next to Ed Reed. Rookie D.J. Swearinger will be the No. 3 safety. Manning is signed through 2014 at $4.5 million. The Texans also placed rookie CB A.J. Bouye on injured reserve Wednesday.

Texans SS Danieal Manning will miss 6-8 weeks with a hairline fracture of his right fibula.

The initial diagnosis was a knee hyperextension, but Monday's MRI revealed more significant damage. It's a huge blow to an underachieving Texans defense that was already getting pummeled by opponents despite its "No. 1 overall" yardage ranking entering Week 6. Manning, a coverage maven, figures to be replaced by rookie D.J. Swearinger. The Texans are reeling at 2-4 entering a Week 7 road date at Arrowhead. The bottom is falling out.
