The Texans will use Danieal Manning "in the box" more as a run defender and in tight end coverage after Glover Quin's departure.
Ed Reed will be Houston's deep centerfield safety, while Manning plays closer to the line of scrimmage. At the position Manning will now play, Quin managed only 84 tackles last season, but broke up 14 passes, intercepted two, and forced two fumbles. Manning only had eight breakups and 77 tackles in the same number of starts. He'll offer more IDP upside moving from free to strong safety. Mar 22 - 7:52 PM

Texans FS Danieal Manning drew rave reviews from his coaches during OTAs.

"Tremendous player," DC Wade Phillips said. "Coaching-wise, when you see a guy play like he plays and practice like he practices, you realize how good they really are and how important they really are. He plays faster than everybody else. I’m talking about everybody else that I see play safety." Manning missed three games last season, but still finished fourth on the team in tackles.

Texans FS Danieal Manning (leg) is expected to play against the Jaguars Sunday.

Manning's return is a major boost to a defense that is already ranked second in the league in points against per game. They'll be a recommended fantasy play against uncomfortable rookie Blaine Gabbert and the Jaguars Sunday.

Texans FS Danieal Manning (leg) practiced on Monday for the first time since breaking his leg in Week 7.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Manning could start against the Jaguars. Manning was given a 4-6 week recovery timetable, but returning this Sunday would still be a best-case scenario. If he practices Wednesday, how he feels on Thursday could go a long way toward determining if he suits up for Week 12.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak said FS Danieal Manning (leg) is doing well in his rehab but did not indicate whether he is ahead of schedule.

Manning's original timetable was 4-6 weeks after surgery to repair a fractured left tibia. He's currently two weeks into rehab. Manning will get his starting job back from Troy Nolan when healthy, but it would be a best case scenario if he was able to return after the Texans' Week 11 bye.

Texans FS Danieal Manning will miss at least four weeks after undergoing surgery Monday to repair a fractured left tibia.

It's another blow to a rejuvenated Texans defense, though for now Manning will avoid injured reserve. He'll be replaced by Troy Nolan, whose play in Manning's absence Sunday drew praise from coach Gary Kubiak. The Texans are entering a soft portion of their schedule, so they're in good position to weather Manning's absence as long as he doesn't prove an exceptionally slow healer.

Updating a previous item, Texans FS Danieal Manning's injury is a fractured tibia.

"My gut feeling is that I’ll be back," Manning said Sunday night. "I feel like I heal pretty well. I haven’t had any major injuries thus far, and I don’t consider this being a major injury right now. All I’m hearing is positive, so the worst it may be – I guess, I don’t know – it may be 4-6 weeks." It sounds like the Texans will do what they can to keep Manning off injured reserve, for now. He's been a difference maker at free safety.

Texans FS Danieal Manning suffered a fractured left fibula in Sunday's blowout win over the Titans.

Manning said that in a "best case" scenario he'd only miss a month. In a worst case scenario, he'd miss 8-10 weeks and probably have to be placed on injured reserve. Manning is both Houston's center-field safety and kickoff returner, so you could argue that this injury is bigger even than Mario Williams'. He's going to be very much missed in terms of pass coverage.

Texans FS Danieal Manning was forced from Sunday's game in the first half with a lower left leg injury.

Manning's return is labeled "questionable" after he was carted to the locker room. Troy Nolan is his backup.

Coach Gary Kubiak confirmed that FS Danieal Manning will be the Texans' primary kickoff returner this season.

Cornerback Sherrick McManis may also be worked in on kickoffs if Manning needs a breather. Manning has averaged an impressive 26.8 yards on 101 returns with the Bears over the past five years. Jacoby Jones will remain the primary punt returner.

Texans agreed to terms with FS Danieal Manning on a four-year, $20 million contract with $9 million guaranteed.

It's hard not to love both of Houston's secondary upgrades executed today. Manning is fairly old to be finishing up his rookie contract (he turns 29 in August), but he also appears to be just now coming into his own. Manning finished No. 5 overall in Pro Football Focus' 2010 cover safety rankings, and he fills very hard against the run. He'll start at strong safety for the Texans and be a massive upgrade on Bernard Pollard against the pass.

The Texans are reportedly one of three "finalists" in the race to sign free agent SS Danieal Manning.

The other finalists are unclear, but we suspect one is the Saints to replace coverage liability Roman Harper. The Vikings are also rumored to have interest. In Houston, Manning would play strong safety across from Glover Quin. He's drawn more interest than Harper, Michael Huff, and even Dashon Goldson.

The Texans and Saints are among the teams showing interest in free agent S Danieal Manning.

The Bears are ready to let Manning walk after using third-round draft picks on a safety in each of the last two years. The Texans could certainly use a player that is versatile in the secondary and doesn't give up touchdowns.

Free agent S Danieal Manning has reportedly received interest from six teams, three each in the NFC and AFC.

Two of the teams are working on setting up visits for Manning this week. He was just one of five safeties who played 75 percent or more of their defensive snaps to not give up a touchdown last year. It's no surprise that he's being heavily recruited.

Free agent S Danieal Manning has reportedly drawn interest from another NFC North club.

We'd bet on the Vikings or Lions. Manning could be seen as a fallback option if the Vikes lose out on the Eric Weddle sweepstakes. Detroit added veteran safety Erik Coleman earlier in the offseason.
