Raiders G Justin Smiley has announced his retirement from football.
A 49ers second-round pick in 2004, Smiley played for three teams during his seven-year career, making 78 starts. He started five games at left guard for the Jaguars last season before losing his job to Vince Manuwai. The Raiders were hoping he'd provide depth this season, but Smiley likely just has nothing left after chronic shoulder injuries in Miami and Jacksonville. Sat, Aug 6, 2011 08:41:00 PM

Raiders signed G Justin Smiley, formerly of the Jaguars.

Smiley was dumped by the Jags after losing his starting gig a year ago. He'll give the Raiders even more depth on the interior of the line.

Jaguars informed LG Justin Smiley of his impending release.

Smiley was due $2 million after losing his starting job last season. Vince Manuwai will return at left guard with Uche Nwaneri on the right side. The Jags are also high on third-rounder Will Rackley.

Jaguars LG Justin Smiley will return to the starting lineup in Week 7.

Smiley was active for Week 6 despite an ankle injury, but the Jags elected to start Vince Manuwai. He'll be back in there against the Chiefs, and while he's a better all-around player than Manuwai, he's not quite as good of a run blocker.

Jaguars LG Justin Smiley left Sunday's game in the second quarter with an ankle injury.

Smiley was listed as "probable" on the Week 5 injury report with an ankle ailment, so we suspect he aggravated the injury. Vince Manuwai is now in. Manuwai is the Jags' best run blocker, so it's not an obvious downgrade.

Jaguars LG Justin Smiley has won the starting job over Vince Manuwai.

Smiley was the favorite all along assuming his shoulder held up. The former Dolphin showed he was healthy with a strong training camp. Manuwai is the team's best run blocker, so we don't like the news for Maurice Jones-Drew.

Justin Smiley passed his physical Tuesday, completing the Jaguars trade with the Dolphins.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel suggested that reports of Smiley's shoulder being "shot" were exaggerated, so it's not really a shock that he passed his physical. The 28-year-old will likely slot in at left guard for the Jags, pushing Uche Nwaneri to center. Declining veteran Brad Meester may be out of job. Smiley agreed to restructure the five-year, $25M deal he signed with Miami in 2008.

Justin Smiley has agreed to restructure his contract if he passes Tuesday's physical and joins the Jaguars via trade.

Smiley is believed to be undergoing the medical now or sometime in the next few hours. The extent of the restructuring is unknown, but he was due $2.9 million in 2010 salary previously. Smiley collected $1.9 million in 2009.

Dolphins OG Justin Smiley, whose trade to Jacksonville is pending, will reportedly undergo a physical Tuesday morning.

According to the Miami Herald's Jeff Darlington, the trade was supposed to be done on Friday, but Smiley has yet to pass his medical. Smiley hasn't had to take a physical since his exit exam at the end of the season. He'll stay with the Dolphins, and probably be released on May 28, if he can't pass. The Jaguars may as well wait it out and try to sign him more cheaply. If he does pass, NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reports the Fins will get a seventh-round pick.

The Dolphins have traded OG Justin Smiley to the Jaguars in exchange for an undisclosed late-round pick, pending a physical.

The Dolphins planned to release Smiley if they couldn't trade him by May 28, so we suspect they only received a seventh-round pick. Smiley's physical is key, as reports have suggested his oft-surgically repaired shoulder is hanging by a thread. If healthy, though, the 28-year-old is still an asset. Smiley's addition would likely seal Brad Meester's fate in Jacksonville.

Dolphins OG Justin Smiley will reportedly be traded or released before May 28.

Smiley recently hired Drew Rosenhaus to bring about a resolution, and it looks like he's going to get his wish within the next couple of weeks. According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, reports of Smiley's shoulder being "shot" were exaggerated. The Dolphins do want to get bigger and more physical at guard, though.

The Bears "may" be interested in signing OG Justin Smiley if he's released by the Dolphins, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Smiley recently changed representation to Drew Rosenhaus in order to bring about a resolution in Miami. The Dolphins reportedly believe his shoulder is "shot," so they've asked him not to show for workouts. That being the case, they can't seriously expect to get compensation for him.

The Dolphins are reportedly convinced that OG Justin Smiley's surgically repaired shoulder is shot.

Two sources tell the Miami Herald that Smiley has lost his strength in the shoulder since signing with the Dolphins two years ago, and he is no longer able to lift his right arm over his head. Smiley's ability to "punch" at the line has been adversely affected. Knowing this, the Dolphins can't expected to get much for Smiley via trade. He may end up being released.

According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Dolphins received interest regarding OG Justin Smiley from the Colts and Seahawks during the draft.

The Fins appeared to overplay their hand, however, and didn't get a trade worked out. Smiley remains restricted from the team's facility for offseason workouts. He's lost his starting job to the winner of the John Jerry-Nate Garner-Donald Thomas derby, and is still hoping to be traded or released.

The Dolphins are considering releasing LG Justin Smiley, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

The Fins shopped Smiley throughout the draft, but couldn't even use him as a trade throw-in. The addition of third-round pick John Jerry may have sealed Smiley's fate, though we'd think his $2.9 million salary isn't too much to pay an effective, experienced backup. Smiley was not a major liability in '09.
