Richard Marshall will battle rookie Jamar Taylor for the starting corner job opposite Brent Grimes.
Marshall's roster spot won't be safe if he loses out to Taylor. He's coming off back surgery and is owed $4.55 million in base salary. However, the Dolphins may be forced to keep Marshall if Grimes can't return to form right away. He tore his Achilles' tendon in Week 1 last season. May 7 - 10:13 AM

Dolphins CB Richard Marshall says his surgically repaired back has healed enough that he could play in a game today.

The Fins may hold Marshall out of early-offseason workouts as a precaution, but it sounds like he's pretty close to 100 percent. Marshall is currently the top corner on Miami's roster signed for 2013, as Sean Smith is a free agent. Expect Marshall to open the season as a starter barring something unforeseen.

The Miami Herald suggests Dolphins CB Richard Marshall is a candidate for offseason release.

The Fins signed Marshall to a three-year, $16 million deal last offseason, but he struggled in coverage before rupturing two disks in his back in late September. The repair required a "daylong" surgery. Marshall is owed $4.55 million in 2013, and cutting him would save $3.02 million under the salary cap.

Dolphins CB Richard Marshall (back surgery) has begun to rehab.

Marshall underwent a "daylong" procedure in November to repair two ruptured disks. He's yet to be cleared to run, but "if all goes well," he'll be ready for OTAs. Signed through 2014, Marshall was shaky as he played through injury this season, and is unlikely to be guaranteed a starting job next summer.

Dolphins placed CB Richard Marshall (back) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Marshall showed promise in early in the season after the Dolphins cut bait with Vontae Davis and handed him the starting job, but he hasn't seen the field since Week 4. He will undergo surgery on Friday. Nolan Carroll will likely remain the starter at RCB going forward.

Dolphins declared CB Richard Marshall, LB Josh Kaddu, S Anderson Russell, OT Will Yeatman, DT Tony McDaniel, TE Michael Egnew, and QB Pat Devlin inactive for Week 9 at Indianapolis.

Marshall (back) and McDaniel (knee) aren't quite ready to return, though they could be aiming for Week 10. McDaniel was walking with an obvious limp in pregame drills. Nolan Carroll will continue to start for Marshall.

Dolphins declared CB Richard Marshall (back) inactive for Week 8.

Marshall hasn't played since Week 4. Nolan Carroll will continue to start, with Jimmy Wilson in the nickel role. The rest of the Dolphins inactives are QB Pat Devlin, LB Josh Kaddu, WR Rishard Matthews, OL Will Yeatman, TE Michael Egnew, and WR Anthony Armstrong. Jabar Gaffney is active and making his Dolphins debut.

Dolphins CB Richard Marshall has reportedly been ruled out for Week 8 versus the Jets.

Marshall expected to return coming off the bye week, but he's going to have to wait at least another week. Nolan Carroll will continue to start, with Jimmy Wilson in the nickel role.

Dolphins CB Richard Marshall (back) expects to play when the Dolphins come out of their bye in Week 8.

Marshall's back pain has been so severe that he's been on crutches. He expects to get into a hyperbaric chamber this week and get the back loose enough to play. Replacement Nolan Carroll has fared well in Marshall's two-game absence.

Dolphins CB Richard Marshall (back) was seen at the team facility Monday walking with a "bad limp" and using a crutch.

There's no timetable for Marshall's return. The Dolphins' pass defense held up well against Andy Dalton without its No. 2 cornerback, and faces St. Louis in Week 6 before a Week 7 bye. Perhaps Marshall will return after the open date. The Dolphins do get another cupcake pass-game matchup against the Jets in Week 8.

Dolphins CB Richard Marshall (back) has been ruled out for Week 5 against the Bengals.

Although we anticipate Sean Smith shadowing A.J. Green in the Week 5 game, missing Marshall can't hurt Green's already promising chances of a big day. The Dolphins will turn to Nolan Carroll as a starting corner opposite Smith.

Dolphins CB Richard Marshall (back) is listed as questionable and his status for Week 4 is up in the air.

Marshall missed Thursday's practice, but was limited on Friday. If Marshall is unable to play, the Dolphins would likely turn to Nolan Carroll at RCB. This downgrade in coverage would be a huge boost to the resurgent Cardinals passing game.

Dolphins CB Richard Marshall (back) did not practice Thursday.

It looks like a setback for Marshall, who did get a limited workout in on Wednesday. If he can't go against the Cardinals Sunday, it will be a big blow to the Dolphins' secondary. Nolan Carroll, who is dealing with an Achilles' tendon issue of his own, is the next man up.

Dolphins DB Richard Marshall will likely begin the year in the slot.

Marshall apparently won't push RCB Sean Smith for a starting job, and the Dolphins aren't inclined to use him at safety for the time being. "I feel I could play wherever they need me, whether it’s corner, nickel or safety," Marshall said. Even if he's not technically a starter, Marshall will see plenty of snaps after landing $6 million guaranteed.

According to the Arizona Republic, the Cardinals didn't view DB Richard Marshall as a starter before letting him sign with Miami, and "didn't come close" to matching the Dolphins' three-year, $16 million offer.

Coming off a season where he saw heavy snaps at both corner and safety, the Cards were apparently focusing on Marshall as their third cornerback. He's expected to get a chance to start in Miami, pushing RCB Sean Smith.
