The Lions could save $2.45 million against the cap by releasing Tony Scheffler.
The cap-strapped Lions have plenty of options when trying to knock their 2013 cap figures down, but MLive.com mentions Scheffler and Shaun Hill as candidates to be cut. Hill's release would save $2.75 million. Scheffler underwhelmed late in the season when asked to step in for injured Brandon Pettigrew. Feb 23 - 1:23 PM

Tony Scheffler caught five passes for 53 yards in Detroit's Week 17 loss to the Bears.

Pressed into far too big of a role down the stretch thanks to the Lions' injury woes, Scheffler will finish with 42 catches for 504 yards. The yards are Scheffler's most since 2008 in Denver, but mostly a product of simply being available. Signed for $1.95 million next season, Scheffler should be back in Detroit, but will be miles from TE1 relevance.

Tony Scheffler caught just four passes for 41 yards in Detroit's Week 16 loss to the Falcons.

It was another underwhelming effort from Scheffler. He wasn't a factor on offense outside of an 18-yard catch and saw less targets than Will Heller and Joique Bell. Scheffler won't have any fantasy value if Brandon Pettigrew (ankle) returns for next week's game against the Bears. He has just 37 catches on the season.

Tony Scheffler caught just three passes for 36 yards in Detroit's Week 15 loss to the Cardinals.

Scheffler finished second on the team with his seven targets, but it wasn't as many as we would have guessed, especially since Matthew Stafford threw the ball 50 times on the day. It was an underwhelming effort, considering that Brandon Pettigrew (ankle) missed the game. If Pettigrew, who is week-to-week, misses next week against the Falcons, Scheffler will again be a low-end TE1.

Tony Scheffler caught three passes for 20 yards and a touchdown in Detroit's Week 14 loss to the Packers.

Pressed into a major role with Detroit paper thin at receiver and Brandon Pettigrew missing a large majority of the evening with an ankle injury, Scheffler was ineffective, catching just 3-of-9 targets. Despite his 6-5 frame, Scheffler didn't come down with a number of jump-balls, and simply didn't make plays for a Lions offense that badly needed him to. Although Scheffler could be peppered with targets again in Week 15 if Pettigrew ends up sitting out, he'd be nothing more than a low-risk, low-reward TE1.

Tony Scheffler caught three passes for 55 yards in the Lions' Week 13 loss to the Colts.

After Ryan Broyles went down with a knee injury five minutes into the game, Scheffler was the Lions' primary slot receiver. But late in the second quarter, he took a helmet-to-helmet shot and had to go to the locker room for concussion testing. Scheffler came back out early in the third quarter, but wasn't a major focus of a Megatron-obsessed Matthew Stafford. Still, there's low-end TE1 upside here if Scheffler plays an every-down slot role in Week 14 against the Packers. It's a situation to monitor.

Tony Scheffler left Sunday's Week 13 game against the Colts with a possible concussion, but returned in the second half.

Scheffler took a helmet-to-helmet shot after making a catch over the middle deep in the second quarter. He was given a concussion test on the sideline and then taken to the locker room. It's a concern because Scheffler sustained a serious concussion earlier this season, but doctors have given him the green light to start the second half.

Tony Scheffler caught five passes for 57 yards in the Lions' Week 12 overtime loss to the Texans.

Scheffler's snaps were limited, but he does line up out wide when on the field. Still, there's just not enough chances to go around here. Scheffler had just 19 catches in the first 10 games of the season.

Tony Scheffler caught three passes for 81 yards versus the Eagles in Week 6.

Scheffler came up big with a 57-yard catch that set up a late fourth-quarter touchdown and pulled the Lions within three points. He could have added a long score of his own, but was overthrown by Matthew Stafford. Scheffler pops up for a big game every now and then based on matchups, but he's not worthy of a waiver pickup heading into a tough matchup at Chicago.

Tony Scheffler (calf) is questionable for Week 4.

Scheffler's a 50-50 bet to suit up against the Vikings after getting in two limited practices. He's not a viable hail-mary option in extremely deep leagues.

Lions TE Tony Scheffler (calf) returned to practice Thursday.

Scheffler is on track to return after sitting out last week's loss to the Titans. He'll slot back in as a rotational pass-catcher.

Tony Scheffler (calf) remained sidelined at Lions practice Wednesday.

Scheffler was inactive for Week 3 after making six catches for 43 yards across Detroit's first two games. He's unlikely to suit up against the Vikings.

Tony Scheffler (calf) is listed as doubtful for Week 3.

Scheffler didn't practice this week and won't be playing against the Titans. Brandon Pettigrew will hog tight end targets with Will Heller playing a bit role.

Dealing with a calf injury, Lions TE Tony Scheffler has yet to practice this week.

Those in the deepest of deep leagues could end up missing out on an attractive matchup for Scheffler. The Titans have allowed five touchdowns to tight ends through two games, including three to Chargers backup Dante Rosario.

According to MLive.com, Lions TE Tony Scheffler has been "incredibly consistent" during camp.

Per beat writer Anwar Richardson, Scheffler "continues to make spectacular touchdown catches, and always finds a way to get open." Scheffler drew offseason praise from OC Scott Linehan, but it's hard to see him dramatically improving upon his 18/286/4 line from last season. He's firmly behind Brandon Pettigrew on the depth chart, and in Rotoworld's tight end rankings.
