Free agent S Anthony Smith has announced his retirement.
Smith is only 28, but he hasn't had a solid role since the Steelers gave up on him following the 2008 season. In 2007, he infamously guaranteed a victory against the 12-0 Patriots and then proceeded to give up two big touchdown plays in a 34-13 loss. "We've played against a lot better safeties than him, I'll tell you," Bill Belichick said afterward. If this really is the end for Smith, he finishes with 19 career starts -- 14 of which came in his first two seasons. Sat, Jul 21, 2012 11:23:00 AM

Titans placed S Anthony Smith on injured reserve with a groin injury, ending his season.

Smith suffered the injury in Sunday's loss to the Saints. He shouldn't need more than a few weeks to get back to 100 percent health. A journeyman former third-round pick, Smith had 11 tackles in 13 games this season. It's not a guarantee he'll break camp on someone's active roster in 2012.

Titans agreed to terms with S Anthony Smith, formerly of the Packers.

Smith recorded just seven tackles in four appearances with the Packers last season after being acquired from the Jags for a conditional seventh-round pick. He hasn't been much of a special teamer, which will hurt his chances of making the Titans roster.

The Packers did not tender free agent S Anthony Smith prior to implementation of the lockout.

Smith, who ended last season on I.R., will be an unrestricted free agent after the lockout. The 27-year-old underachiever managed seven tackles in four appearances last season after being acquired via trade from Jacksonville.

Packers placed S Anthony Smith (ankle) on injured reserve, ending his season.

He was deactivated to make room for Graham Harrell, who the team promoted after Aaron Rodgers was ruled out for Week 15. Smith is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.

Packers S Anthony Smith left Sunday's game with an ankle injury.

The Packers lost both their backup safeties Sunday as Smith joined Atari Bigby on the sideline. The severity of Smith's sprain is unknown.

Packers acquired S Anthony Smith from the Jaguars in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick in 2011.

Smith was impressive in Packers camp in 2009, but lost out on a roster spot to Aaron Rouse because Rouse was a Ted Thompson draft pick. Rouse is currently out of football. According to Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the move indicates that the team is not confident in SS Atari Bigby's return from ankle surgery. Bigby is currently on the PUP list, and eligible to come off in Week 7. It appears he isn't ready yet.

Jaguars declared S Anthony Smith, RB Deji Karim, FB Brock Bolen, LB Justin Durant, OT Kevin Haslam, TE Zach Potter, DE Austen Lane, and DT Landon Cohen inactive for Week 3.

Courtney Greene gets the start at strong safety in place of Smith. Karim still isn't over his thumb injury. Durant will be replaced by Russell Allen.

Anthony Smith is entrenched as the Jaguars' starting strong safety.

We've always loved Smith's talent, but confidence and mental errors have long prevented him from consistently playing on defense. If the light has truly flipped on in Jacksonville, Smith is an IDP breakout waiting to happen.

The Jaguars' first unofficial depth chart of training camp showed Anthony Smith and Gerald Alexander as the starting safeties.

It's interesting that Reggie Nelson is nowhere to be found after a disastrous 2009 season. He, Sean Considine, and coaches' favorite Don Carey remain in the mix, but this is going to be a subpar unit no matter who ends up starting.

Jaguars claimed S Anthony Smith off waivers from the Rams.

Smith, a once promising former Steelers third-round pick, is now on his fourth NFL team. His biggest downfall has been lack of improvement on special teams. Smith will back up Gerald Alexander and Sean Considine.

Rams waived S Anthony Smith.

With strong safety James Butler finally healthy, the Rams need more help at corner than safety. Smith has starting experience, so he'll likely find a job elsewhere.

Rams claimed S Anthony Smith off waivers from the Packers.

It's a very nice pickup for St. Louis, which needed depth badly behind O.J. Atogwe and James Butler. Smith arguably outplayed starter Atari Bigby in camp, but Green Bay seemingly couldn't admit it and went with special teamer Derrick Martin as a backup instead. Smith has starting-caliber talent.

Packers agreed to terms with S Anthony Smith on a two-year, $1.485 million contract.

Smith will back up starters Nick Collins and Atari Bigby, both of whom are slated to hit unrestricted free agency after next season. Smith has starter level talent and experience, but he's also been a bit of a headcase. He will be reunited with new Packers safeties coach Darren Perry.

The Packers are interested in free agent S Anthony Smith, according to the National Football Post.

The report states that Green Bay may "extend Smith an offer sheet." He was not tendered as a restricted free agent by the Steelers, however, so no offer sheet is needed. The former third-round pick is an unrestricted free agent.
