WGR 550 reports WR/KR/QB Brad Smith is "firmly atop" the list of potential cap casualties for the Bills.
Smith, 29, has two years left on a four-year, $15 million contract, and the Bills can save $2.75 million against the cap by releasing him. Buffalo used day-two picks on Robert Woods and Marquise Goodwin, and signed top UDFA Da'Rick Rogers behind Stevie Johnson and T.J. Graham. Smith doesn't have much of a role anymore. Beat writer Joe Buscaglia also names RT Erik Pears, K Rian Lindell, QB Tarvaris Jackson, and DE Mark Anderson as release candidates. May 9 - 3:50 PM

Bills WR/QB Brad Smith caught two passes for 49 yards and a touchdown in Week 4 against the Patriots.

We all know the drill on Smith by now. While he has some talent and can play multiple offensive and special teams roles, he's never a big enough part of Chan Gailey's week-to-week game plan to be given serious fantasy-start consideration. Smith entered Week 4 with five touches for 27 total yards. Leave him on the waiver wire heading to Week 5 against San Francisco.

The Bills are incorporating more passing plays for Brad Smith in their Wildcat package.

We suspect Smith's primary role will be on special teams, but the Bills plan to get him involved in spread/option packages, and at wide receiver. Smith saw 403 offensive snaps last season, drawing 41 targets.

Coach Chan Gailey said the Bills have ''expanded their plans'' for Brad Smith in the team's Wildcat package.

Smith has worked almost exclusively at quarterback during OTAs, but Gailey confirmed the Bills will continue to use him at wide receiver and in gadget-type roles. In addition to special teams, Smith projects as the Bills' third quarterback and fifth receiver.

Bills coach Chan Gailey stated at the end of minicamp Friday that Brad Smith will be the team's third quarterback in 2012.

Smith will also be the gadget guy and Wildcat quarterback. Gailey's comment suggests the Bills will keep just one of Vince Young and Tyler Thigpen on the final, 53-man roster. Our money is on Young backing up Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Bills coach Chan Gailey plans to continue to use Brad Smith in a gadget-type role in 2012.

Smith made five starts down the stretch in 2011, but averaged only 32 yards in them. He's not a natural wideout. "We were going along there and running the Wildcat with him and if you’d look, when our third-down efficiency dropped off was when we had to move him to wideout full-time," Gailey said. "...He can be your fifth or sixth wideout, he can be a good special teams player."

The Bills have ruled out WR/KR Brad Smith (hamstring, hip) for Week 17.

Coach Chan Gailey said Smith's hamstring injury "just won't go away." Instead of Naaman Roosevelt, the Bills will turn to Derek Hagan against the Pats.

Bills WR Brad Smith (hamstring, hip) was held out of practice again on Thursday.

Coach Chan Gailey ruled him out for Week 17 after practice. With an average of just over four yards per over the past three games, Smith wasn't going to be a fantasy option regardless.

Bills WR Brad Smith (hamstring, hip) missed Wednesday's practice.

Smith is dealing with both a sore hamstring and a hip flexor. He's managed just 13 yards on four receptions combined in Buffalo's last three games.

Brad Smith caught three passes for five yards in the Bills' Week 15 loss to the Dolphins.

As expected, Smith has come back to earth since his fluky Week 12 and 13 outbursts. He's a gadget player that is now losing snaps to Derek Hagan and Ruvell Martin.

Brad Smith was held without a catch in the Bills' Week 14 loss to the Chargers.

Smith started opposite Stevie Johnson and racked up five targets, but this is the danger with a "gadget" player. He struggled to separate and Ryan Fitzpatrick eventually turned his attention to Derek Hagan on some deep balls. Smith won't be a real fantasy option against the Dolphins next week.
Sun, Dec 11, 2011 08:06:00 PM

Brad Smith caught seven passes for 72 yards in Sunday's loss to the Titans.

Smith was officially listed as a "starter" opposite Stevie Johnson and ended up leading the Bills in targets with 10. He caught almost all of his passes underneath, but used his kick returner ability to make things happen after the catch. Smith is on the deep-league PPR radar as an every-down player that has 14 catches in the last three weeks.
Sun, Dec 4, 2011 05:28:00 PM

Coach Chan Gailey confirmed that Brad Smith will stick as the starter opposite Stevie Johnson.

David Nelson will remain in his natural slot position. Smith posted four catches for 77 yards and a score against the Jets last week and has now moved ahead of Naaman Roosevelt on the depth chart. Extreme deep leaguers can take a flier, but we'd expect last week to be Smith's best game of the season. He's really a returner/gadget guy more than a wideout.

Bills WR/KR Brad Smith rushed once for four yards and caught four passes for a team-high 77 yards and a touchdown in the team's Week 12 loss to the Jets.

Smith beat Antonio Cromartie for his third-quarter touchdown from 36 yards out. It was Smith -- not Ruvell Martin -- who played outside in Donald Jones (ankle) and Naaman Roosevelt's (shoulder) absences. Smith could be a somewhat intriguing return-yardage league option in Week 13 against the Titans should Roosevelt again sit out. Smith also returns kickoffs.

Brad Smith caught three passes for 35 yards in Sunday's loss to the Dolphins.

Smith hurt his ribs when he deflected a Ryan Fitzpatrick pass for an interception and then took a shot in the gut. He later returned, but only saw four targets. Even with Donald Jones (ankle) down, Smith won't see enough snaps to be a factor in fantasy.
