Lions released RB Mike Bell.
Bell was hampered by an illness and Aaron Brown has been showing well in camp. At age 28 without any special skills, Bell will likely need injuries to latch on elsewhere. Mon, Aug 29, 2011 11:15:00 AM

Lions signed RB Mike Bell, formerly of the Browns.

The Lions are likely just kicking the tires on Bell after losing Mikel Leshoure (Achilles) for the season. Over the last three seasons, Bell has played for three different teams and averaged just 3.43 yards per carry. Despite being more of a physical presence than Jerome Harrison, Bell will have to beat out Maurice Morris and Aaron Brown for a job.

The Cleveland Plain-Dealer is not expecting the Browns to re-sign free agent RB Mike Bell.

Bell backed up Peyton Hillis after arriving in Cleveland as part of last October's Jerome Harrison trade, but ended up carrying the ball just 31 times for 71 yards. Provided his surgically repaired left knee checks out, Montario Hardesty will serve as Hillis' primary backup in 2011. The Browns will likely also bring in more competition for carries in free agency.

Browns RB Mike Bell rushed just twice for three yards in his Cleveland debut in Week 6.

He's not a threat to Peyton Hillis' workload. Bell is averaging well under 2.0 yards per carry this season. Hillis had 18 touches against the Steelers.

The Browns have been "working overtime" to get newly acquired RB Mike Bell ready for the team's Week 6 matchup against Pittsburgh.

The team clearly doesn't feel comfortable with James Davis backing up Peyton Hillis, but Bell doesn't bring much to the table. With Hillis (thigh) limited, Bell may see some carries, but he's not worth owning unless Hillis misses extended time.

Browns acquired RB Mike Bell from the Eagles in exchange for RB Jerome Harrison.

It's a win-win move for the Birds. The Eagles no longer have to feel compelled to play Bell after guaranteeing him $2 million while he was averaging 1.8 yards per carry, and Harrison gives them a player with solid all-around skills, if limited upside. Bell will compete with James Davis to be Peyton Hillis' backup. It's hard to imagine Bell being a real factor in Cleveland, however, considering how poorly he was playing in Philadelphia.

With LeSean McCoy battling a fractured rib, Mike Bell is expected to take the first-team tailback reps in Eagles practice this week, barring "some major personnel changes."

Bell has 20 yards on 12 carries through four games, and would have a difficult matchup at San Francisco if he got the start. The Eagles figure to go pass heavy rather than rely on a back to "carry the load," even with Kevin Kolb the probable new starting quarterback. Philly did not hesitate to let Kolb air it out in 2009 spot starts. He averaged 43 pass attempts per game.

Eagles RB Mike Bell was held out of Thursday's practice with an illness.

No details are available, though we suspect Bell will be fine for Sunday's game against Washington. He's only being used as a backup to LeSean McCoy this season.

The Philadelphia Inquirer & Daily News' Les Bowen thinks the signing of RB Joique Bell could be a bad sign for RB Mike Bell.

Bowen also mentioned RB Eldra Buckley as a potential roster casualty or maybe OT Austin Howard going on IR with his back ailment, an injury that Andy Reid suddenly made public even though Howard has been dealing with it since training camp.

Eagles RB Mike Bell is practicing fully this week after sustaining a toe strain in the season opener.

Bell went without a carry in Week 1, with the Eagles playing catchup against the Packers. He'll enter the mix this week as a goal-line or clock-killing option between the tackles. Bell is not a fantasy option at Detroit.

Coach Andy Reid revealed Monday that RB Mike Bell suffered a toe strain in the Eagles' opener Sunday.

Bell, who has been on the shelf since the spring, didn't touch the ball once in Week 1. Though the injury isn't believed to be serious, it's more reason for the Eagles to explore the free agent wire for running backs. Martell Mallett is a practice squad option. J.J. Arrington is a free agent.

Eagles RB Mike Bell is scheduled to make his preseason debut next Friday night against Kansas City.

Bell (calf) did not suffer a setback when he was deactivated for the Birds' second exhibition; the team held him out as a precaution. Bell's job as a short-yardage back is safe with rookie Charles Scott failing to stand out.

Updating a previous item, Mike Bell is inactive for the Eagles' preseason game against the Bengals Friday night.

Bell took part in warmups, but his calf may still be a problem. He's now out of his pads and in street clothes. Bell has been injured for most of camp.

Mike Bell is active for Friday night's preseason tilt against the Bengals.

We're interested to see how much he plays, and if he does run extensively, how Bell is used. He's widely been expected to be the Birds' short-yardage specialist. Michael Vick is going to play plenty in the red zone, but Bell could be a sleeper for 8-10 touchdowns if he's the designated goal-line back.

Mike Bell (calf) returned to a limited practice Wednesday, but remains questionable for Friday's preseason game.

Bell has been bit by the injury bug all camp, but the Eagles still have high hopes for him. He remains a major threat for the majority of short-yardage work.
