Stephen Gostkowski - K - Patriots

The Patriots worked out free agent kickers Billy Cundiff, Neil Rackers and Graham Gano Wednesday.

The Pats are putting Stephen Gostkowski on notice even though he's drained all seven of his field-goal attempts the past four weeks, and is 17-of-20 on the year. More than likely, coach Bill Belichick is just compiling an emergency list in case Gostkowski struggles again later in the season. Gostkowski has been very reliable throughout most of his seven-year career, converting 84.5 percent of his field-goal tries.

Stephen Gostkowski - K - Patriots

Patriots K Stephen Gostkowski (quad) drilled two field goals and five extra points in Thursday's preseason opener.

The field goals were from 46 and 43 yards out, so he was sufficiently tested. Gostkowski is not yet handling kickoffs because he's still building strength in his leg. Barring a setback, he should be all systems go for the start of the season.

Now over six months removed from surgery to reattach the muscle to the bone, Gotskowski feels as good as he has in any previous year. The Pats may bring in a camp leg to take some of the reps, but Gostkowski is locked into field-goal duties barring a setback.

Coach Bill Belichick expressed confidence Tuesday that K Stephen Gostkowski will fully recover after tearing his quad muscle from the bone last November.

Gostkowski's 67.9 yards per kickoff ranked fifth in the league last season. Asked about his support for the new rule placing kickoffs at the 35-yard line, Belichick responded, "We've got a good kicker, sorry."

Patriots K Stephen Gostkowski's quad muscle was actually torn "right off the bone" of his kicking leg last season, thus necessitating his November surgery.

Gostkowski's doctors are confident that he'll make a full recovery by training camp. The Patriots have to be at least slightly concerned about their kicker after such a serious leg injury, however. At least on kickoffs and long field goals, Gostkowski will be under the microscope early in the season.

The injury was more serious than anticipated, but Gostkowski is still expected to be ready for training camp this summer. Shayne Graham will likely be jettisoned after converting all 12 of his field goal attempts in eight games.

Patriots K Stephen Gostkowski recently underwent surgery to repair his injured quadriceps muscle.

The injury ended up being worse than originally believed, and the procedure was done to add strength to the muscle. The surgery isn't expected to hold him back going into the 2011 season.

Patriots placed K Stephen Gostkowski (quad) on injured reserve, ending his season.

It was originally reported that Gostkowski would miss just a couple weeks, but it turns out that his quad muscle is torn and he may need surgery. Having signed a $15-plus million extension in August, Gostkowski's job will be safe in 2011. Shayne Graham will be the Pats' kicker for the remainder of the season.

The Boston Globe is reporting that his status is "up in the air," while Comcast SportsNet New England previously reported he'll miss at least two weeks. The team is expected to sign Shayne Graham to fill in. At this point, coach Bill Belichick has only called bringing in another kicker "a possibility."

The Patriots will have to sign a kicker off the street. Beat reporter Mike Reiss has already mentioned Shayne Graham and Shaun Suisham as candidates. Gostkowski currently ranks just 20th in the league with 13 field-goal attempts.

The Patriots declined to give an update on K Stephen Gostkowski's (thigh) status following Sunday's loss to the Browns.

Gostkowski appeared to injure his thigh in the second quarter on a kickoff. "His leg tightened up in the game; obviously he wasn't able to finish and kick," said coach Bill Belichick. "So we'll have to see. But he wasn't able to finish the game." At this point, it seems unlikely Gostkowski will be able to kick in Week 10. ESPN's Mike Reiss notes that Shayne Graham and Shaun Suisham are both free agents.

Stephen Gostkowski has missed three of his four field-goal attempts so far this season.

Gostkowski has been off the mark from 37, 47 and 56 yards out. It's not a real concern. Gostkowski is annually one of the best kickers in the game and he'll get this thing turned around quickly. Don't be afraid to use him against the Bills next week.

Gronkowski emerged from surgery Monday afternoon.
