Bills OL Brad Butler informed the team Thursday that he is retiring from football.
A guard in 2007-08, Butler kicked out to right tackle last summer only to tear his ACL in the second game of the season. Just 26 years old, Butler was originally a 2007 fifth-round pick by the Bills out of Virginia. He cited a "passion for education, country and community" as his reason for walking away from football. The Bills' team website confirms that the knee injury suffered by RT Brad Butler in Week 2 of 2009 was a torn ACL.

The extent wasn't revealed at the time of his injury. Butler already had limited mobility, and a knee operation threatens to cost him more. While he should be ready by training camp, Butler may have to kick back inside to guard.

Bills placed RT Brad Butler (knee) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Butler was the team's most physical run blocker after the losses of Langston Walker and Derrick Dockery. Buffalo will turn to one of journeymen Jonathan Scott and Kirk Chambers the rest of the way. With a finesse line now that projects better for pass protection than power runs, the Bills may lean on Fred Jackson's versatility in the backfield even when Marshawn Lynch returns.

Bills RT Brad Butler is out of the year with a knee injury.

Will this news mean that Jon Runyan has finally found a home? It sure seems like a good fit. Jonathan Scott replaced Butler in the Week 2 win over the Bucs but the Bills are really thin on the offensive line right now.

Bills RT Brad Butler's right knee injury is expected to keep him out for awhile.

Butler, in his first season at tackle, couldn't put weight on his right knee after Bucs DE Stylez White rolled into the back of his legs. Journeyman Jonathan Scott came on to replace him and fared surprisingly well. The Bills' line depth will be a concern all season.

Bills RT Brad Butler left Sunday's game with a leg injury.

The Bills' line has been adequate for the second straight week, but Butler's loss will hurt. He was replaced by Jonathan Scott, who was out of the league for most of last season.

Bills RT Brad Butler (back) returned to practice Tuesday.

Butler's return pushes developmental project Demetrius Bell back to the bench, but the Bills still have one of the least athletic tackle duos in the league.

Sidelined by back pain, Bills RT Brad Butler is expected to miss the preseason opener against the Titans Sunday.

Kirk Chambers will fill in, but Butler's absence adds to the challenge of trying to get the revamped offensive line on the same page in time for the season.

The Bills are expected to move guard Brad Butler to right tackle this season.

Buffalo will likely use rookie Eric Wood at right guard with Andy Levitre at left guard. Butler, an offensive tackle for Al Groh at UVA, has the size (6'7/315) to be effective at his college position. Still, with Langston Walker at LT this is one of the least athletic tackle duos in the league.

Bills RG Brad Butler has resumed practicing this week and is expected to play against the Browns on Monday night.

He's missed the last three games. Butler is one of Buffalo's best interior run blockers, so his return should help struggling Marshawn Lynch's cause.

Bills RG Brad Butler suffered a strained knee in Week 7 against San Diego.

A ligament strain could put Butler out for multiple weeks, but the extent of his injury isn't known yet. Buffalo gave Butler an extension this past June.

Bills starting right guard's Brad Butler's contract extension goes through 2012 and includes $8.8 million in new money.

He's adding three years to his original deal that was set to run through 2009, and the total deal will average just under $2 million a year. Butler is getting more security early in his contract, but this is a very Bills-friendly pact.

Bills signed RG Brad Butler to a contract extension.

It appears he was a bigger priority than LT Jason Peters. Butler, a fifth-round pick in 2006, has developed into a nasty run blocking starter after sitting most of his rookie year due to a college injury. Terms were undisclosed.

The Bills have named Brad Butler their starting right guard.

He got the nod over Duke Preston and journeyman Jason Whittle. Butler, a second-year player, has made the transition from college tackle to guard.

Butler, a 2006 fifth-rounder, had a shoulder injury when he was drafted and missed most of his first year. The college tackle will battle at right guard.
