Newly-acquired LB Daryl Smith is expected to start on the strong side for the Bucs.
Released by the Ravens in March, Smith signed a one-year, $2.5-million deal to join the Bucs. The veteran's play started to tail off last season, but he should bring experience and leadership to a relatively young linebacking corps. Kwon Alexander and Lavonte David will take up the other two linebacker spots in new-DC Mike Smith's defense. Jul 23 - 9:35 AM

Buccaneers signed LB Daryl Smith, formerly of the Ravens, to a one-year contract.

Now 34, Smith remained a 16-game starter for the Ravens last season, but his play began to take a dive. The Bucs have one of the league's thinner linebacker corps, but Smith would ideally be a reserve. Durability and leadership figure to be his Tampa calling cards. For what it's worth, he's reuniting with Mike Smith, who was the Jaguars' defensive coordinator the first four years of Smith's career.

Free agent LB Daryl Smith will visit the Bucs.

Smith started all 48 games for the Ravens over the last three years, but his play started to decline sharply last season. The 34-year-old is clearly nearing the end, but he could be a good veteran option for a team in need of linebacking help. Bucs DC Mike Smith was the coordinator in Jacksonville when Smith was selected in the second-round of the 2004 draft.

The Ravens are open to re-signing free agent ILB Daryl Smith at a lower price.

Going on 34, Smith was due $3.5 million before he was released on Thursday. Smith started all 48 games for the Ravens over the past three seasons, but if GM Ozzie Newsome truly wanted him back at a lower price, he likely would have been retained with a pay cut instead of being cut loose.
Mar 3 - 3:45 PM

Ravens released ILB Daryl Smith.

A starter the past three years, Smith's 2015 play was in decline and he is entering his age-34 season. It's a cap move from the Ravens, saving $2.6 million. Smith should draw interest from 3-4 defenses as a veteran stopgap.
Mar 3 - 11:21 AM

The Baltimore Sun's Jeff Zrebiec believes Ravens ILB Daryl Smith is a release candidate.

Smith has started all 48 games over the past three seasons after signing with the Ravens, but his play fell into decline last season after being one of the league's better 3-4 inside linebackers the previous two years. Now 34 (next month), the Ravens need to think about moving on and finding a new starter next to C.J. Mosley. Releasing Smith would create $2.625 million in cap space.
Feb 24 - 9:45 AM

Ravens re-signed ILB Daryl Smith to a four-year, $16.1 million contract.

After operating on a cheap, one-year deal last season, Smith gets the money he was seeking last spring. Turning 32 today, Smith led the Ravens with 123 tackles in 2013 and became the defensive leader as the on-field play-caller. Smith struggles against the run but is an elite cover linebacker and can rush the passer some. He'll continue to help youngsters Arthur Brown and Josh Bynes.

Sources tell the Baltimore Sun that the Ravens and ILB Daryl Smith still have a "disconnect" on contract numbers.

Smith led the Ravens in tackles with 123 last season, playing all but two defensive snaps. GM Ozzie Newsome needs him back. Smith is likely hunting for more money than originally expected after watching 32-year-old Karlos Dansby squeeze four years and $24 million out of the Browns. The Broncos have a hole at middle linebacker and could come calling if they miss out on Jon Beason.

The Baltimore Sun's Aaron Wilson says the Ravens consider free agent ILB Daryl Smith a "priority to retain."

Wilson added a deal was not imminent. The report comes as a surprise as all news out of Baltimore suggested Smith would be allowed to test the market. The Ravens still may allow that to happen, but releasing Jameel McClain could be a sign that Baltimore is confident in bringing Smith back. Smith led the Ravens with 123 tackles last season and played all but two defensive snaps. He is our No. 4 free agent inside linebacker.

CSN Baltimore considers the Broncos and Titans potential suitors for free agent ILB Daryl Smith.

Smith led the Ravens with 123 tackles last season, adding five sacks and three interceptions while starting all 16 games. He's expressed interest in re-signing with Baltimore, but is expected to test the open market. Smith is likely to command a multi-year deal after playing on a one-year contract in 2013.

Impending free agent ILB Daryl Smith wants to re-sign with the Ravens and believes the team wants him to return.

Smith, 31, didn't sign with Baltimore until June after seeing a very quiet market while coming off an injury-plagued season in Jacksonville. He ended up starting all 16 games for the Ravens, missing just two defensive snaps. Smith set new career-highs in tackles (123), sacks (5), interceptions (3), and pass breakups (19) and graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 19 inside 'backer.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh says ILB Daryl Smith is already becoming "a quarterback of the defense."

Signed to a cheap, one-year deal in June, Smith has already taken control of a starting job and is calling Baltimore's defensive plays. The Ravens feel Smith will prove "one of the best bargains of the offseason" if he stays healthy. Smith -- not rookie Arthur Brown -- is being asked to fill Ray Lewis' shoes.

Ravens agreed to terms with LB Daryl Smith, formerly of the Jaguars, on a one-year contract.

It's a low-risk, high-upside signing for GM Ozzie Newsome as he looks to replace Ray Lewis and Dannell Ellerbe. A groin injury limited Smith to two games last season, but the Jaguars' all-time leading tackler was highly effective in 2011. He's undoubtedly on the downside of his career, but should go a long way toward fortifying the Ravens' inside linebacker corps as long as he's healthy. After being panned in the early days of free agency, the Ravens are arguably more talented now than they were in 2012.

The Baltimore Sun reports free agent LB Daryl Smith is on the Ravens' "radar," and that the sides have "mutual interest" in a deal.

The Jaguars' all-time leading tackler, Smith was one of the linchpins of Jacksonville's defense before a groin injury limited him to just two games last season. Although he's now 31, Smith was still one of the game's better linebackers in 2011. He'd more than make up for the Ravens' "loss" of Rolando McClain. To date, Smith's lone free-agent visit was to the Rams in early April.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch believes the Rams are still in play for free agent LB Daryl Smith.

Thanks to Chris Long's contract restructure, the Rams finally have a little bit of room under the cap. They could move on Smith or free agent S Quintin Mikell soon after the draft. Neither veteran has attracted any other known interest.
