Free agent DT Fred Evans worked out for the Patriots.
Evans visited on Friday, but left without a contract. He would give New England a rotational run-stopper behind Vince Wilfork, Sealver Siliga, and rookie DL Dominique Easley. 30-year-old Evans made three starts and played 356 snaps for the Vikings last year. The Vikings will give Fred Evans a chance to unseat Letroy Guion for their starting nose tackle job in training camp.

"The coaches keep telling me that, hey, we need to give Fred a shot to compete for the No. 1 job," said Leslie Frazier. At nose tackle -- a run-stopping position -- 6-foot-4, 305-pound Evans would give Minnesota a stouter option after its run defense became a liability down the stretch last season. Guion is a converted three-technique gap shooter. His base salary is $2.45 million.

Vikings re-signed DT Fred Evans to a two-year contract.

A rotational lineman, Evans appeared in all 16 games last season, making 22 tackles off the bench and contributing some on special teams. The six-year veteran will compete for playing time with Christian Ballard and Letroy Guion. Evans' return may be a sign that Remi Ayodele will ultimately be released.

Vikings re-signed DT Fred Evans.

Minnesota didn't extend a restricted free agent tender to Evans in March after he made $1.8 million in 2010. A career reserve, Evans notched just four tackles in eight games last season. He'll have a similarly quiet 2011.

Vikings failed to extend a tender to potential restricted free agent DT Fred Evans.

The five-year veteran played under a $1.759 million contract, but the Vikes don't want to exceed that again this year. Evans was likely headed toward the open market anyway. He's a favorite of GM Rick Spielman, so the Vikes could bring him back at a lower rate.

Vikings re-signed restricted free agent DT Fred Evans to a one-year, $1.759 million contract.

Pat Williams' backup on the hose, Evans appeared in 12 games last year, making nine tackles off the bench. The 26-year-old's role is unlikely to increase significantly this year behind the Williams Wall and Jimmy Kennedy.

The Vikings have assigned DT Fred Evans, a restricted free agent, with a second-round tender.

Evans will be safe for Minnesota after falling behind Jimmy Kennedy and recording just nine tackles off the bench last season. Once viewed as NT Pat Williams' possible eventual successor, Evans' stock has taken a hit.

Vikings signed restricted free agent DT Fred Evans to a one-year, $1.545 million contract.

Evans is currently Minnesota's third tackle behind Pat and Kevin Williams. Pat is recovering from multiple surgeries and turning 37, so the Vikes could draft competition for Evans with as early as the No. 22 overall pick.

The Vikings extended restricted free agent DT Fred Evans a second-round tender offer.

The second-round tender is for $1.545M. Evans made two starts down the stretch last year when Pat Williams broke his shoulder blade and held up well. Evans finished with 16 tackles.

Vikings DT Fred Evans will avoid jail time after reaching a plea bargain agreement today.

Evans received two years of probation on his felony charges, with jail time possible if he violates his probation. The current charges, meanwhile, violated a previous probation on a marijuana charge in Texas, where he must now appear on a misdemeanor charge. The important thing to take from this is that Fred Evans is bound to face at a league suspension for his personal conduct.
