Chiefs downgraded FS Abram Elam (quadriceps) from doubtful to out for Week 15 versus the Raiders.
Elam has started seven games on defense this season, but he hasn't played since exiting Week 13 very early in the first quarter. Undrafted free agent Tysyn Hartman got his first NFL start against the Browns last week and will likely get another one on Sunday. Sat, Dec 15, 2012 01:36:00 PM

Chiefs agreed to terms with S Abram Elam, formerly of the Cowboys.

He'll provide veteran insurance for rehabbing SS Eric Berry (ACL surgery) and FS Kendrick Lewis (torn pectoral). Elam has started at least 15 games each of the past three seasons, but was a liability in coverage for the Cowboys during his age-30 campaign. Elam has traditionally fared better as a run stopper, however, and that should be his primary role if he cracks Kansas City's 53.

Free agent S Abram Elam visited the Chiefs this week.

Elam, a 47-game starter over the past three years, also visited the Titans early in the week. Elam and Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel never crossed paths in Cleveland. Crennel left a year prior to Elam's arrival.

Free agent S Abram Elam and Gibril Wilson visited the Titans on Monday.

Both are 30 years old. Elam recorded 68 tackles while starting all 16 games for the Cowboys a season ago. Wilson played just over 200 snaps for the Bengals after tearing both his ACL and MCL during the 2010 preseason. Chris Crocker and Yeremiah Bell recently visited the Titans, as well.

Owner/GM Jerry Jones would not be surprised if free agent FS Abram Elam returns to the Cowboys in 2012.

"Certainly, he was the quarterback. He really knew the defense," explained Jones. "It's not a given, but it wouldn't be a surprise for him to be there." Fixing the secondary is part of Jones' "multi-pronged approach" to turning the Cowboys into a contender. According to Pro Football Focus, Elam was a liability in coverage in 2011.

Cowboys signed S Abram Elam to a one-year, $2.5 million contract.

The safety market is flooded, leading to identical one-year deals for Elam and Gerald Sensabaugh in Dallas. Elam played strong safety under coordinator Rob Ryan in Cleveland the past two years, so he's a natural fit. It's not clear which player will be changing positions, as Sensabaugh is also a strong safety. Either way, Elam is a major upgrade on Alan Ball, who struggled opposite Sensabaugh last year.

Free agent S Abram Elam reportedly remains "high" on the Cowboys' list of safety targets.

The Cowboys are trying to get him on the cheap. They're reportedly not even considering Michael Huff and Gerald Sensabaugh any longer because both are looking for big pay days. It's difficult to love Dallas' free agency pursuits so far.

Free agent Abram Elam was the first safety contacted by the Cowboys on Tuesday.

Beat writer Clarence Hill confirms the Cowboys prefer Elam to Michael Huff. Both players have been coached by defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, though Huff was an early-career bust under Ryan's watch in Oakland. While Dallas is clearing plenty of cap space, Fox Sports Southwest is still not convinced Nnamdi Asomugha will be a target.

The Cowboys are expected to seriously consider free agent S Abram Elam if Gerald Sensabaugh signs elsewhere.

Elam played under new Cowboys coordinator Rob Ryan the past two years in Cleveland, so the connection is obvious. ESPN Dallas also suggests Dawan Landry, Quintin Mikell, and Brodney Pool as possibilities, with no mention of Michael Huff this time around.

Browns defensive coordinator Dick Jauron is planning to sign a starting safety in free agency.

Jauron's comments indicate that free agent SS Abram Elam is not in the Browns' plans. "We would love to add a safety," Jauron said. Jauron worked with free agent SS Quintin Mikell last year in Philadelphia, and Donte Whitner in Buffalo. The Bills tendered Whitner, but he is not expected back with the team.

Jaguars GM Gene Smith says he plans to sign "at least a couple of starters" on defense when free agency begins.

Major need areas on defense in Jacksonville include linebacker and defensive back, particularly safety. "We're going to be active in upgrading talent," said Smith, adding that he's seeking players "who can help us take a step as a defense." Free agent safeties include Abram Elam, Donte Whitner, and Gerald Sensabaugh. Some linebackers are James Anderson, Ben Leber, and Mike Peterson. Sensabaugh and Peterson are both former Jags.

FOX Sports' Adam Caplan suggests free agent S Abram Elam as a possible offseason target for the Cowboys.

Elam played for new Dallas DC Rob Ryan last year. The Cowboys may have to overhaul the safety position with Gerald Sensabaugh also a free agent and Alan Ball having not panned out. Elam has experience at both strong and free safety.

Abram Elam and rookie T.J. Ward are working as the Browns' first-string safeties at the start of training camp.

Mike Adams has converted into a nickel back, and late-round rookie Larry Asante is probably ticketed for special teams to begin the year. Projecting as a strong run defender, Ward is our favorite IDP to target in this secondary.

Browns S Abram Elam wrote on his blog this week that he feels "no hard feelings" toward the team despite his lack of a contract extension.

The Browns didn't give out any extensions this offseason, so Elam shouldn't feel left out. Though he skipped some voluntary spring practices, Elam signed his tender in mid-June and will report to training camp on time. He'll have a battle on his hands with rookie Larry Asante to retain a starting job.

Browns re-signed restricted free agent S Abram Elam to a one-year, $1.759 million contract.

Elam will return to offseason practices in a fight for his starting job. The team's best safety last year, Elam now must hold off rookies T.J. Ward and Larry Asante for snaps. While Ward looks to be entrenched at free safety, Asante may pose the biggest threat to Elam's snaps on the strong side.
