ESPN Boston suggests TE Daniel Fells is a candidate for release.
Fells is owed $1.25 million in base salary in 2013. We know the strict blocker will be behind Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, and Michael Hoomanawanui is expected back as a restricted free agent as well. Patriots declared TE Daniel Fells, DE Jake Bequette, OL Markus Zusevics, DB Malcolm Williams, WR Kamar Aiken, DB Derrick Martin, and OL Nick McDonald inactive for the Divisional round game versus the Texans.

Fells is no longer needed as a blocking specialist with Rob Gronkowski back to full health. The Patriots removed 15 players from their injury report on Friday, suggesting they are as healthy as they've been all season following the first-round bye.

Patriots TE Daniel Fells is working his way back from a leg injury.

In typical Patriots fashion, we previously didn't know why Fells missed the entire offseason program. There's still no reason to think the injury is serious, but the Pats have been kicking the tires on tight ends lately. They briefly added Bo Scaife and are hosting free agent Visanthe Shiancoe Thursday. Fells is just a blocker behind Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez anyway.

According to ESPN Boston, TE Daniel Fells "was not spotted at all" in the Patriots' offseason program.

Fells isn't known to be hurt, so perhaps his absence was just a veteran courtesy. A blocker with decent hands, Fells' roster spot behind Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez should be secure provided he's healthy.

Patriots signed TE Daniel Fells to a three-year contract.

New England was Fells' only known visit. A former undrafted free agent, Fells spent the first three years in St. Louis before signing with the Broncos last season. He started 15 of 16 games. Primarily a blocker, Fells has 88 catches in 58 career games. He'll be called on to block behind Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. Aside from potentially freeing up Hernandez from some of his blocking duties, Fells won't make a fantasy impact for the Pats.

Fells is a career journeyman, signing with five different teams in each of the last seven seasons. Despite an above-average skill set, he would be no better than a third-string tight end in New England.

Fells sustained his concussion in last Thursday's win over the Jets. He has just 15 catches for 201 yards with two touchdowns in 10 games this season.

Fells was held without a catch on one target. He'll have to pass his baseline tests to play against the Chargers in Week 12. Fells sustained the only injury of note in coach John Fox's post-game presser.

The majority of Fells' yardage came on a 31-yard completion with just seconds left on the clock. Fells has just 11 catches through five games as the Broncos head into their bye.

Denver's tight end picture is now crowded, which is bad news for Dan Gronkowski and possibly even reputed blocking specialist Richard Quinn. Fells is expected to get the first shot at the starting job, but he offers little blocking and even less after-the-catch burst. He won't be a fantasy option with the Broncos.

If Fells doesn't leave Denver with a deal, he'll continue on to Tennessee. The Seahawks and Rams are also reportedly showing interest, but this might just be a case of an agent drumming up buzz. Fells is a below-average NFL tight end.

Tennessee is reportedly one of multiple teams in the mix. Based on Fells' 2010 performance, we're surprised anyone would want him. He's looked awfully slow and mistake prone with the football in his hands. In Tennessee, Fells would compete for a roster spot behind Jared Cook and Craig Stevens.
