Jaguars released RB/FB Montell Owens.

Owens was a core special teamer and reserve fullback for the first 4 1/2 years of his career. Then the Jags' backfield was decimated by injury and he became a name in fantasy football circles by rushing for 180 yards with a touchdown between Weeks 14 and 16 of last season. A knee injury kept Owens out of Week 17 and it still might not be right. He did participate in this week's OTAs. 29-year-old Owens was owed a $2 million base salary.

Jaguars RB Montell Owens (knee) has not been medically cleared yet.

Owens was a core special teamer and reserve fullback until injuries decimated the Jags' backfield last year. He ended up as a feature back in Weeks 14-16, impressively compiling 35 carries for 180 yards (5.14 YPC) and one touchdown during that span. But he went down with a knee injury that kept him out of Week 17 and now Justin Forsett has been signed to back up a soon-to-be healthy Maurice Jones-Drew. Owens won't be a real candidate for carries this season.
Apr 4 - 11:26 AM

Montell Owens is inactive for Week 17 against the Titans after suffering an injury in pre-game warmups.

Owens' knee flared up during the pre-game workout. Richard Murphy is expected to handle the rushing load against Tennessee. Jacksonville's Week 17 inactives are Owens, CB Antwaun Molden, G Eben Britton, G Uche Nwaneri, TE Allen Reisner, DE John Chick, and DT Jerome Long.

According to the Times Union, the Jaguars "don't want to tax [Montell] Owens to where he can't be a Pro Bowl-caliber player on special teams" in 2013.

Owens has fared well as a desperation feature back over the last three weeks, rushing 35 times for 180 yards (5.14 YPC) with one touchdown and adding six catches for 94 yards. That's led to speculation that he could enter 2013 as Maurice Jones-Drew's backup with Rashad Jennings and Jalen Parmele set to hit the free agent market, but the Jags apparently don't want to go down that path. Look for a young backup that could eventually take over for Jones-Drew to be brought in this offseason.

Montell Owens rushed for 42 yards on ten carries and caught four passes for 77 yards in Sunday's Week 16 loss to the Patriots.

Owens and No. 2 back Richard Murphy split carries right down the middle at ten totes apiece. Owens did his damage in the receiving game, picking up a long catch-and-run of 53 yards to set up a field goal attempt in the first half. He could start the season finale in Tennessee, but Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) and Rashad Jennings (concussion) appear to be nearing a return.

Jaguars RB Montell Owens rushed 11 times for 47 yards and caught a pass for a gain of six in the team's Week 15 loss to Miami.

Owens isn't a terrible player, but he lacks any hint of big-play ability and has been a minimal factor in the passing game through two starts. The Dolphins' heavyweight defense stifled Owens on first-quarter runs, before Jacksonville turned to the passing game due to a scoreboard deficit. Owens will remain a weak flex option when the Jaguars host the Patriots in Week 16.

Montell Owens is expected to start for the Jaguars again in Week 15.

Rashad Jennings has yet to pass concussion tests and is not practicing again this week. Owens, a special teamer and part-time fullback, was Jacksonville's best offensive player in last week's game versus the Jets. He has tougher sledding against a stout Dolphins front seven.

Montell Owens rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries in Jacksonville's Week 14, 17-10 loss to the Jets.

Owens went into halftime dealing with some cramping and missed the first two series of the third quarter while being tended to in the locker room. After his return, Owens took a carry around the left edge and waltzed into the end zone for an easy, untouched 32-yard score to pull the Jags within seven in the fourth quarter. It ended up being the final score of the game. With Rashad Jennings dealing with a concussion and Maurice Jones-Drew still nursing a foot injury, Owens could see another start next week in Miami.

Coach Mike Mularkey expressed confidence that special teams ace Montell Owens can handle feature-back duties with Reshad Jennings (concussion) ruled out for Sunday versus the Jets.

"I trust Montell Owens," Mularkey said. "When he had chances to carry the ball, I thought, 'Wow, this guy -- I knew he was a good football player but this guy is a decent back. He can actually produce like I wasn't sure of. I think we've got to test the waters.'" Owens is a good bet for 18-20 touches with Jordan Todman and Richard Murphy taking on the appearance of pure backups. Rotoworld ranks Owens No. 31 among running backs for Week 14.

The Times Union says Montell Owens "seems set to start at running back" against the Jets Sunday.

Rashad Jennings is nursing a concussion, Jalen Parmele (groin) is on injured reserve and Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) remains on the shelf. That leaves Owens, a 5'10/225 plodding special teams ace that is more of a natural fullback. In 71 career games, he's rushed just 21 times for 112 yards with two touchdowns. Seven of those carries came in a relief role last week after Jennings went down. Look for a pass-heavy gameplan out of the Jags with Owens leading a committee that will also involve Richard Murphy and possibly Jordan Todman. Owens is a risky RB3 type in fantasy circles despite coach Mike Mularkey's optimism. "I think when he has had his opportunities, which have been very few, I've been pretty pleased with the way he has run the ball. He's just a really good football player," Mularkey said.

Taking over for an injured Rashad Jennings, Montell Owens rushed seven times for 29 yards and added one reception for 11 yards at Buffalo in Week 13.

Richard Murphy, promoted from the practice squad Saturday, didn't see a single carry while Jordan Todman was inactive. Should Jennings and Maurice Jones-Drew both miss next week's game versus the Jets, Owens would likely lead a committee attack with Murphy and Todman. Keep expectations low for the special teamer.

Jaguars RB Montell Owens sustained a left shoulder injury in Sunday's Week 7 loss to the Raiders.

It's unclear if Owens will be able to serve as Rashad Jennings' backup in Week 8. Look for the Jaguars to add a running back off the street this week. Regardless, Jennings projects to see a very heavy workload.

Jaguars RB Montell Owens sustained a concussion during the Week 3 win over the Colts.

Owens was serving as Maurice Jones-Drew's backup thanks to Rashad Jennings' knee injury.
Sun, Sep 23, 2012 07:07:00 PM

Coach Mike Mularkey said that Montell Owens has won the backup RB job behind Rashad Jennings.

Mularkey's depth chart doesn't include holdout Maurice Jones-Drew. Owens, mainly a fullback during his four-year career, has just 14 career carries. The Jags will be in big trouble if he totes the rock during regular season games.
