Raiders released OG Mike Brisiel.

Brisiel started 30 games over the past two seasons, but was out of a job after the Raiders signed Austin Howard to man right guard. Brisiel was ticketed to "compete" with Kevin Boothe and Khalif Barnes on the left side, but was always a realistic candidate for release. The move creates $1.38 million in cap space, but leaves behind $3.93 million in dead money. Now 31, Brisiel would reportedly like to continue his playing career, but has struggled mightily the past two seasons.

Speaking Tuesday, Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie confirmed Mike Brisiel will have to compete for a starting job in 2014.

With new signee Austin Howard penciled in at right guard, Brisiel will compete with Kevin Boothe and Khalif Barnes on the left side. According to McKenzie, the Raiders would like the 31-year-old Brisiel to "get bigger." There's still a strong chance Brisiel is ultimately released.

ESPN Raiders reporter Paul Gutierrez thinks there's a strong chance RG Mike Brisiel retires.

Brisiel is just 31 years old (next month) but battled several nagging injuries last season, even though he started 15 games. He just wrapped up the second season of a five-year, $20 million contract which has proven to be one of GM Reggie McKenzie's several personnel mistakes. The Raiders can save $1.38 million against the cap by cutting Brisiel. He's not a great fit in Oakland.

Raiders RG Mike Brisiel "lost control of his blocks on several occasions" in Friday's preseason game.

Brisiel struggled mightily in 2012, but continues to receive the majority of playing time with the first-team offense. At just 300 pounds, he remains a questionable fit for Oakland's power-blocking scheme. The Raiders may ultimately be forced to move Khalif Barnes to guard, while starting Alex Barron at right tackle.

Brisiel signed a five-year deal last year, but was a big-time bust in his first season with the Silver and Black. At just 300 pounds, he's also a poor fit for the Raiders' new power-blocking scheme. The agent for Raiders RG Mike Brisiel clarified that his client lost no money upon restructuring his contract.

Initially believed to have taken a pay cut, Brisiel will instead receive a guaranteed roster bonus of $3 million next week in exchange for slashing his salary from $4.35 million to $1.35 million. The $3 million payment will be treated like a signing bonus and prorated over the contract's life, lowering Brisiel's 2013 salary cap charge but increasing his cap number in future years.

It sounds like a true pay cut as opposed to a salary cap move. Brisiel was signed specifically to play guard in former Raiders OC Greg Knapp's zone-blocking system. The zone scheme has since been scrapped, and Brisiel may return as a backup only in 2013. He would've been released without the restructuring.

Recovering from "major" ankle surgery, zone-blocker Brisiel is no longer a schematic fit with the Raiders returning to a power scheme. Releasing Brisiel would free up $2.8 million in cap space, while the Raiders have a pair of potential young (and cheap) replacements in Tony Bergstrom and Lucas Nix. Brisiel is as good as gone.

It's the second concussion he's dealt with this season. Assuming he sits out the finale, Brisiel will finish a disappointing year with the Raiders, grading out negatively in all aspects by Pro Football Focus. Lucas Nix or Alex Parsons will likely be used to replace him in the starting lineup.

"I did what I was supposed to do, and they allowed me to practice so I'm not going to miss any time," said Brisiel, who was concussed after taking a knee to the back of the head at Atlanta. The Raiders have yet to play a full game with their projected starting five offensive linemen, and it shows. They've been a bottom-five unit this season.

Raiders signed OG Mike Brisiel, formerly of the Texans, to a five-year, $20 million contract.

The Raiders are moving back to a zone-blocking rushing attack. Brisiel not only has five years of experience in the scheme, but also played Oakland coordinator Greg Knapp and OL coach Frank Pollack in Houston. Brisiel should take the right guard vacancy opened by Cooper Carlisle's release.
