In addition to Derrick Brooks, the Saints had in free agent LB Derek Smith for a workout Tuesday.

Smith, 33, began the season as San Diego's starting inside linebacker next to Matt Wilhelm but was totally ineffective and was replaced by Stephen Cooper. Smith's 12-year career has probably reached its end.

Derek Smith has a "strong chance" to start at inside linebacker for the Chargers' first four regular season games.

That's how long Stephen Cooper will be suspended. Cooper will almost certainly regain his job once he's reinstated. Smith, 33, would be getting the nod over Brandon Siler, Tim Dobbins, Jyles Tucker, and Anthony Waters.

Chargers signed LB Derek Smith, formerly of the 49ers, to a two-year contract.

Smith's play sharply declined the past two years. It's odd the Bolts would want the 33-year-old behind Matt Wilhelm and Stephen Cooper with Brandon Siler, Tim Dobbins, and 2007 third-rounder Anthony Waters in reserve. He's a smart player, though, and experienced depth can't hurt. Smith still may not be a lock to make the club.

49ers waived LB Derek Smith.

The move was expected, as Smith was scheduled to earn $3.28 million after evolving into a one-down player for the 49ers. The 33-year-old will catch on elsewhere if he wants, but the 49ers are expected to use the savings as they make a run at Lance Briggs.

The 49ers met with the agent for ILB Derek Smith this week.

There's no word on what was discussed, but Smith will have to take a big pay cut to remain a 49er in 2008. The Niners continue to be the heavy subject of rumors involving free agent Lance Briggs. Briggs' strength is his sideline-to-sideline ability, but he would apparently play Smith's TED position if signed.

Smith has played in every game this season, but reeled off only 78 tackles, a low for him since 2000. The 49ers could go with Brandon Moore, who has better big play ability, next to Patrick Willis inside next season.

The Niners' defense seemed a bit more energized with Ulbrich in there over Smith against Atlanta, but neither player would be a very good IDP pickup.

49ers head coach Mike Nolan says the team's starting weak inside linebacker position is "Derek (Smith's) job to lose."

"In third downs, it's Patrick (Willis') job to keep or lose," Nolan continued. Willis reportedly is proving he has a lot to learn and hasn't overtaken Smith yet. It's still likely that the first-rounder will during the season, but he may not be an IDP stud initially.

Derek Smith is being pushed by first-round pick Patrick Willis to be the 49ers' weak inside linebacker.

Smith's peripheral vision is limited following offseason eye surgery. It would be a surprise if he's not overtaken by the younger, faster Willis.

49ers inside linebacker Derek Smith underwent surgery to repair a muscle in his right eye Monday night.

In 2006, Smith attributed an early-season inability to zero in on opposing running backs to blurry vision. He's expected to be withheld from contact drills until the preseason, so he'll likely miss training camp.

He appears likely to return this weekend at Denver. Smith may need to undergo eye surgery at some point during the upcoming offseason.
