Torry Holt will sign a one-day contract to retire as a member of the St. Louis Rams.
Holt finished out his career in failed spots with the Jaguars and Patriots. Due to bad knees, Holt's effectiveness fell off the map at age 31. We suspect Holt needed at least a few more Pro Bowl-caliber seasons in order to be a legit Hall of Fame candidate. Now 35, Holt finished his career with 920 receptions, 13,382 yards, and 74 touchdowns. He made seven Pro Bowls and six times was a top-eight fantasy wideout. Holt is second in Rams history in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving TDs. Isaac Bruce, a slightly less dominant receiver but far better "compiler," is No. 1 in all three categories. Former Rams WR Torry Holt has yet to file retirement papers with the NFL because he's holding out hope of playing again in 2011.

"I'm going to continue to keep my options open," Holt said. "I'm training right now. So if something comes about — great. If not, hey, the NFL Network has been good to me." Holt underwent another surgery this past February when Dr. James Andrews cleaned out his knee. Dr. Andrews gave him "a great deal of confidence" in addition to the green light to keep playing. We'd still be surprised if Holt ended up on a Week 1 roster this year.

Former Rams and Patriots WR Torry Holt isn't ruling out a comeback to the NFL.

Holt was out of work in 2010 due to persistent knee trouble, and recently took a full-time job with NFL Network. "Some days I feel good and I think, 'Maybe' this can happen," he said. "But there are times when the pain and discomfort is there and it takes me back to reality." He's fully expected to retire. "Big Game" once looked like a better Hall of Fame bet than Isaac Bruce, but couldn't sustain his elite play long enough. Although Holt made more Pro Bowls (7, to Bruce's 4), Bruce finished with better numbers across the board.

Beat writer Steve Corkran speculates that the Raiders will attempt to sign free agent Torry Holt.

Corkran is basing this guess on the Raiders' past signings of receivers like Andre Rison, Jerry Rice and Javon Walker at the end of their careers. Stranger things have happened, but Holt may have even less left in the tank than those guys did. If the Raiders did bring Holt in, it would be further confirmation that Darrius Heyward-Bey's solid spring hasn't translated to pads.

Patriots released WR Torry Holt with an injury settlement.

Holt could potentially join another team later in the season. He was scheduled to undergo knee surgery this week, though the exact nature of the procedure is unknown. The 34-year-old has little left in the tank at this stage. He's highly unlikely to resurface as a fantasy factor this season.

Patriots placed WR Torry Holt on injured reserve with a knee injury, ending his season.

He'll need surgery on the knee, but this was essentially a nice way of the Pats telling Holt he wouldn't make the team. Now 34, Holt's career may be over. He's been unable to separate from defensive backs since the 2007 season, and was outplayed by youngsters Taylor Price and Brandon Tate in Patriots camp. It's quite possible that Holt's inability to play deep into his 30s will cost him a shot at the Hall of Fame. He made seven Pro Bowls with the Rams.

Patriots WR Torry Holt is listed as inactive for Thursday's preseason opener against the Saints.

Holt has been sidelined for undisclosed reasons, and his absence tonight won't help his chances of making the team. Notables joining Holt on the inactive list are CB Leigh Bodden, DE Ty Warren, and LB Jermaine Cunningham.

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss is the latest scribe to predict that Torry Holt will not make the Patriots' roster this season.

The Pats seem likely to keep six or seven receivers, but special teamers Sam Aiken and Matthew Slater are ticketed for those final two spots. Holt was already behind the eight-ball before missing this week's practices with an undisclosed injury. Wes Welker's quicker than anticipated return leaves Holt without an offensive role.

Torry Holt has missed Patriots' practice the past two days for "undisclosed reasons."

Holt was already no better than sixth on the depth chart at wide receiver, and he offers no special teams value. At this point, he's far from a lock to make the final roster. Don't go near him in fantasy drafts this summer.
Tue, Aug 10, 2010 01:33:00 PM's Don Banks believes Torry Holt could be fighting rookie Taylor Price for the final receiver spot this summer.

Julian Edelman and Brandon Tate are considered "sure bets" to make the roster. As predicted, Holt has struggled to separate from corners early in training camp. Price, meanwhile, is already showing big-time potential as a pass-catcher and route-runner. The Pats wouldn't risk losing the third-rounder on waivers. Holt is undraftable this year.

Torry Holt and David Patten will be used as outside receivers in the Patriots' offense, according to Tom Brady.

Neither is the replacement for injured slot man Wes Welker; Julian Edelman has no real competition for the inside receiver role until Welker returns. Holt and Patten (particularly Patten) will be on the roster bubble all summer. They'll be expendable if youngsters Brandon Tate and Taylor Price emerge.

Coach Bill Belichick indicated that the addition of Torry Holt had nothing to do with his decision to pass on Dez Bryant in the draft.

The Patriots had a definite need for a young playmaker on offense, but they can try to address that in the second round. Belichick indicated that he still would have selected Devin McCourty had he stayed at No. 22 overall instead of doubling down.

Patriots agreed to terms with WR Torry Holt, formerly of the Jaguars, on a one-year, $1.7 million contract.

The Patriots have a habit of signing veterans looking for a last chance at ring, so it's not surprising that the 34-year-old Holt would land in New England. It's not a great fit, though. Julian Edelman can hold down the slot until Wes Welker returns, and the Pats need a playmaker opposite Randy Moss. The signing shouldn't preclude them from adding a receiver with an early-round pick. In fantasy terms, we prefer Edelman to the declining Holt as a potential WR3 this year.

Free agent Torry Holt says he wants his next team to have "an elite quarterback" in place.

Beggars can't be choosers, but the player once known as "Big Game" is already limiting himself. "That list is small, but that’s something I’m looking at in terms of my next move," he said. suggests the Patriots as a possible landing spot. New England isn't afraid to take fliers on older players.

Free agent Torry Holt indicated Wednesday that he's receiving little interest on the open market.

Holt claims he spoke to a few teams recently, but he's still in wait-and-see mode at this time. The 34-year-old also reiterated his desire to play for Mike Martz in Chicago, but the Bears aren't showing strong interest in him. Holt probably needs at least another year of solid production to solidify a spot in the Hall of Fame. Things may pick up for him after the draft.
