Browns LT Joe Thomas announced his retirement after 11 seasons.
Thomas made 167 consecutive starts for the Browns after being drafted No. 3 overall in the 2007 draft and was an eight-time All-Pro. He never missed a snap before tearing his triceps last October, and that will go down as his final NFL play. It's sad to see Thomas go now that the Browns appear to finally be executing old GM Sashi Brown's plan via new GM John Dorsey. The team is loaded with draft picks and turned a couple of them into Tyrod Taylor and Jarvis Landry last week. They also signed OT Chris Hubbard on Tuesday, and he'll likely take the place of Thomas on the left side. Thomas is certainly headed for both the Browns' Ring of Honor and the Hall of Fame. Expect to see him in media. Mar 14 - 2:02 PM

Browns LT Joe Thomas said his decision on whether or not to retire is "right around the corner."

Per Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, there's a "good chance" that decision could come by 4 PM ET Wednesday afternoon, which coincides with the official start of the new league year. Thomas said he's "excited" about the moves Cleveland has made via trades and free agency but reiterated that his decision will be based "purely" on health. The Browns signed tackles Chris Hubbard and Donald Stephenson Tuesday as insurance should Thomas decide to hang up his cleats.

Browns LT Joe Thomas said his decision on whether to continue playing will be based "purely" on health.

Thomas said he's been impressed by the Browns' recent moves but ultimately the team's trades for Jarvis Landry, Tyrod Taylor and Damarious Randall will not affect his decision. "My decision will be based purely on my health," said the 33-year-old. "But I'm excited by the moves John [Dorsey] made." The 10-time Pro Bowler suffered a torn triceps last year, which ended his streak of 10,363 consecutive snaps.

Browns LT Joe Thomas remains undecided about his playing status for 2018.

Speaking on Tuesday, Thomas said he is "close" to making a decision and wants to let the Browns know before the start of free agency this time next week. He admitted he's been flip-flopping a bit on the decision by the day. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport recently said he thinks Thomas will play in 2018, but we're not sure he has any insight on it. Thomas legitimately seems undecided.
Mar 6 - 8:06 PM

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said on the Around the NFL podcast that he anticipates Browns LT Joe Thomas returning for 2018.

A 12th-year player, Thomas had never missed a game before tearing his triceps last Week 7. There have been rumors Thomas has begun dropping weight, but it's believed he does so in most offseasons. "I do believe he's coming back," said Rapoport. "I think the Browns think he's coming back as well. It sounds like he's gonna announce in some sort of social media way, probably pretty soon."
Mar 1 - 11:28 AM

Browns LT Joe Thomas hopes to have a decision on his 2018 status by the start of free agency.

"Whether I’m going to come back or retire, I think, from their perspective, having a certain need going into free agency is important," Thomas said. The reality is, the Browns will need to know even sooner than that so they can begin planning for the future if Thomas hangs up his cleats. We doubt he will leave the Browns in a lurch.
Feb 20 - 6:29 PM

Contract-year LT Joe Thomas hinted he will not sign a new contract with the Browns.

Thomas has yet to decide if he will return for his 12th season, but he seemed to suggest 2018 will be his final year in Cleveland even if he decides to return. "No matter what I decide to do, this is the last year of my contract in Cleveland. I’m also 33 right now," Thomas said. "They need to be planning for somebody else pretty soon down the line whether it’s this year or next year." Thomas missed the first snaps of his career because of a triceps injury last season, but lingering back and knee issues are bigger concerns as he decides whether or not to continue his career. Even if he comes back, it is time for the Browns to start looking toward the future.
Jan 29 - 10:27 AM

Browns LT Joe Thomas (triceps) expects to be cleared by July.

That means he should be ready for training camp if he decides to return for his 12th season, something the tackle says is still up in the air. "Had a lot of time to think and spend some time with the family, but not ready definitively to make a decision one way or the other just yet," Thomas said. "I think there are some days you go back and forth." Thomas added the triceps injury will not play a big role in his decision, but lingering back and knee issues could cause him to call it quits. Despite last year's struggles on offense, the Browns have the makings of a top-shelf offensive line, but the unit would take a massive hit if Thomas decides to hang 'em up.
Jan 18 - 9:41 AM

The Browns have restructured the contract of LT Joe Thomas.

Thomas was paid a $1.5 million roster bonus this week, and is getting a $1.5 million raise for 2018. It's questionable timing with Thomas on injured reserve, but the Browns expect him to be fully healthy next year. Thomas is now the highest paid left tackle in the league.

Browns LT Joe Thomas (torn triceps, injured reserve) will undergo surgery on Tuesday, and be sidelined 6-9 months.

Speaking Monday, coach Hue Jackson said he was hopeful Thomas would return for 2018. Thomas is due $8.8 million in the final year of his contract. For his part, Thomas wasn't ready to think that far ahead. "Am I done playing?," Thomas asked rhetorically. "I don’t know. I think that’s a decision that’s best talked about in the offseason." Thomas turns 33 in December.

Browns announced LT Joe Thomas will miss the rest of the season with a torn left triceps.

An MRI confirmed the injury on Monday, and Thomas will likely be placed on injured reserve this week. It is a devastating blow for the Browns which also ends Thomas' streak of 167 consecutive starts. Spencer Drango replaced Thomas at left tackle on Sunday.

An MRI confirmed Browns LT Joe Thomas has a torn triceps.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the veteran is still exploring his options, but this is almost certainly a season-ending injury. It is a tough break for a player who had not missed a snap in 11 seasons. Spencer Drango replaced Thomas at left tackle on Sunday.

Browns LT Joe Thomas is believed to have suffered a torn triceps.

That would be a season-ending injury. A Monday MRI will confirm. The injury ended Thomas' historic snap streak at 10,363 on Sunday. His loss would further torpedo a Browns offense that's been completely unseemly.

Browns LT Joe Thomas left Sunday's Week 7 game with a left triceps injury and will not return the game.

Thomas injured his arm locked up with Brian Orakpo and immediately went to the locker room. The 11-year vet had previously never missed a snap over his entire career prior, with his streak ending at 10,363 consecutive snap played.
Sun, Oct 22, 2017 02:58:00 PM

Browns LT Joe Thomas said Wednesday that he is experiencing short-term memory loss, but he is "willing to accept" the risks of continuing his career.

Thomas has famously never missed an NFL snap and has no documented concussions in his history. "Short-term memory loss -- hard times remembering things that have happened recently," said Thomas, 32. "Like, you walk to the grocery store and you're like, 'Huh, I can't remember what I needed to get.'" Thomas said his hope is medicine will "continue to improve" to a point where he can be treated should he develop any sort of dementia related to football.
