Appearing on NBC Sports Network's Pro Football Talk on Thursday, Patrick Willis said there's a "zero" percent chance he'll un-retire.
"The time for me has come," Willis said. "I understand that it was something that was talking to me, and talking to me for a long time and when I hurt my toe in that game I felt like, as soon as it happened, I went down and I felt it." Still only 30, Willis will have a few years to change his mind, but his conviction sounds strong. Unfortunately for fans of the NFL, it appears one of the best linebackers of his generation has played his final down. Mar 19 - 8:48 PM

Patrick Willis says his retirement is final, and that he won't come back "in case I get bored at home or need a paycheck."

Willis says he has closure. "I’m happy today. I’m more happy than the day I was drafted." Willis says his decision to retire ultimately came down to his feet, which gave him major issues in 2014. "I know I no longer have it in these feet to go out there and give you guys that 'wow.' It's my health first." The NFL is losing one of its best overall players.

The 49ers officially announced Patrick Willis' retirement Tuesday.

Willis is walking away at age 30 on his own terms, a rarity in professional sports. A source told CSN Bay Area that, "Patrick is not having fun. He doesn’t want to play football." So it appears that the best linebacker of his generation is done, leaving behind five first-team All-Pro appearances and borderline Hall of Fame credentials. Willis was the game's best cover linebacker and a premier run-stuffer, racking up 930 tackles, 16 forced fumbles, 20.5 sacks and 53 pass breakups in his eight seasons. His retirement nets the 49ers $7.4M in cap space.

Posting on social media Tuesday evening, 49ers ILB Patrick Willis strongly hinted he's retiring.

Amidst emojis, hashtags and bible verses, Willis hinted at his reason for hanging up his cleats. "I thank you guys for everything, it has been an absolute pleasure," Willis said. "I look forward to the continuation of my journey. ... I feel full with something that needs to be out, and i just want to share it!" Official word on Willis' retirement should come sometime this week.
Mar 10 - 12:21 AM

A source tells Yahoo the 49ers are expecting ILB Patrick Willis to retire.

Earlier Monday morning, PFT's Mike Florio teased a bomb coming out of San Francisco. We now know what it is. Willis is only 30 years old. A report from Bay Area Sports Guy says Willis is hanging up his cleats after recently experiencing a "religious awakening." Willis also has had chronic toe issues in recent years. Maybe he just wants to go out on his own terms. It would be a sad end to a dominant career that saw Willis get named a first-team All-Pro five times in eight seasons -- he was the game's best middle linebacker both in coverage and against the run. His retirement would net the 49ers $7.4M in cap space.
Mar 9 - 10:14 AM

49ers ILB Patrick Willis (toe) is fully expected to be ready for the start of training camp.

Willis sprained his left toe in Week 6 and ended up needing surgery. With Navorro Bowman (knee) also expected back healthy and Chris Borland emerging as a stud last year, the 49ers are stocked at inside linebacker once again.
Mar 2 - 8:42 AM

49ers LB Patrick Willis (injured reserve) says his toe has been an issue for "several seasons."

"It’s been something that I’ve been dealing with for a while now," Willis said. "I don’t look to play this game for just another year. ... When I hurt it in the Rams game, it made me nervous then because I knew what I had already been feeling all these years." Although Willis' loss is a huge blow for the 49ers, it's absolutely the right call for Willis to take the long view. Signed through 2016, Willis turns 30 in January.

49ers placed ILB Patrick Willis on injured reserve with a toe injury, ending his season.

Willis has been sidelined since Week 6, and it's now been determined that he needs surgery. He's the top all-around linebacker in the game, excelling both in coverage and against the run. Rookie Chris Borland, a tackle machine, will fill in. Fellow injured ILB Navorro Bowman revealed this week that he's also still feeling pain in his surgically-repaired knee. It'll be Borland and Michael Wilhoite.

Sources tell FOX Sports that 49ers ILB Patrick Willis (toe) is likely done for the season.

Willis has been sidelined since spraining his left toe in Week 6. It appears he'll need season-ending surgery, a devastating blow to the Niners even though backup Chris Borland has been a major revelation. Willis, 29, is a five-time first-team All-Pro, seven-time Pro Bowler and arguably the game's premier cover linebacker. Fantasy owners are free to stream tight ends against San Francisco, starting with Larry Donnell in Week 11.

FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reported Sunday morning that 49ers ILB Patrick Willis' toe injury could cost him "significant time."

Willis has been out since October 13, so he's going on a full month missed. But it sounds like Willis could still miss several more weeks. Expect rookie ILB Chris Borland to continue to rack up tackles in the absence of Willis, who was deceptively listed as "questionable" on this week's injury report despite not practicing at all during the week. It's a big blow to San Francisco's defense, particularly in tight end coverage.

49ers ILB Patrick Willis (toe) is inactive for Week 10 against the Saints.

The expected news is a nice boost for Jimmy Graham, as Willis is arguably the top cover linebacker in the game. He should be considered week to week, and likely to suit up for Week 11. Also inactive for the 49ers are QB Josh Johnson, WR Quinton Patton, CB Leon McFadden, S L.J. McCray, LB Dan Skuta and OL Dillion Farrell.

According to NFL Network's Jeff Darlington, 49ers ILB Patrick Willis (toe) is "very, very doubtful" for Sunday's Week 10 game against the Saints.

Willis is listed as questionable, but did not practice all week as he continues to battle his sprained toe. Look for Chris Borland to start. It's a major matchup upgrade for Jimmy Graham, as Willis is the NFL's top cover linebacker against tight ends. Graham is our No. 1 play at tight end Sunday.

49ers ILB Patrick Willis (toe) is officially listed as questionable for Week 10 after missing the entire week of practice.

49ers DC Vic Fangio, however, conceded "it would be more like doubtful" if Willis didn't practice Friday, and he did not. Expect Michael Wilhoite and rookie Chris Borland to be San Francisco's inside linebackers at New Orleans.

49ers ILB Patrick Willis (toe) missed his third straight practice Friday.

Willis is shaping up as unlikely to play in Sunday's bout with New Orleans, which would be great news for Jimmy Graham's fantasy matchup. The Niners frequently use Willis -- the NFL's top coverage linebacker -- to chase opposing tight ends. Expect Chris Borland to continue filling in next to Michael Wilhoite.

49ers ILB Patrick Willis (toe) is considered questionable for Week 10.

Willis missed Wednesday and Thursday's practices. Willis appeared poised to return in Week 9 before being a last-minute scratch. The 49ers badly need Willis to suit up as they look to slow down Jimmy Graham.
