Patrick Willis recently underwent surgery on his left thumb and is in a cast.

What was exactly wrong with Willis' thumb is unknown; he wasn't on the injury report ahead of the NFC Championship game. It's possible he suffered the injury in Seattle. Either way, Willis should be ready for minicamp in June.

Patrick Willis (groin) is active for Week 6 against the Cardinals.

Willis was listed as questionable on the injury report but was expected to play all along after missing the past two games. DT Ray McDonald (arm) is also active.

The San Francisco Chronicle expects Patrick Willis (groin) to play in Week 6 against the Cardinals.

He's officially listed as questionable. Willis was limited again in Friday's practice, but is on track to return after missing the last two games. DT Ray McDonald (questionable, biceps) is also expected to play this week.

49ers DC Vic Fangio believes the chances of ILB Patrick Willis (questionable, groin) playing in Week 5 against the Texans are "better than 50-50."

Willis' availability won't be formally decided until 90 minutes before Sunday night's kickoff, but he's trending in the right direction. He practiced on Friday and looks in track to start, sending Michael Wilhoite back to the bench.

49ers ILB Patrick Willis (groin) is listed as questionable for Week 5 against the Texans.

"We'll see," coach Jim Harbaugh said when asked whether Willis will play on Sunday Night Football. The coach just seems to be playing coy. Willis practiced on Friday and has had a ten-day layoff following last Thursday night's win. It would be surprising were Willis not active against the Texans.

49ers ILB Patrick Willis (groin) is expected to be a game-time decision for Sunday's game against the Texans.

Willis got in limited practices on Wednesday and Thursday. He admitted he's still sore and fighting through the pain of the pull he sustained on Sept. 22. Backup Michael Wilhoite had seven tackles in last week's thrashing of the Rams.

49ers ILB Patrick Willis (groin) is inactive for Thursday night's Week 4 game against the Rams.

Willis didn't practice all week and was ruled out after going through pre-game warmups. The rest of the 49ers inactives are CB Nnamdi Asomugha, WR Marlon Moore, QB B.J. Daniels, WR Chris Harper, FB Owen Marecic, and OG Joe Looney. LaMichael James and Jon Baldwin are both officially active for the first time this season.

49ers ILB Patrick Willis (groin) is considered a game-time decision for Thursday night's game in St. Louis.

It's a hopeful designation, as Willis didn't practice all week and is just four days removed from going down. Even if he's active, there's no way he'd play a full complement of snaps.

49ers ILB Patrick Willis (groin) is "hopeful" he'll be ready for Thursday night's game against the Rams.

Despite Willis' optimism, the odds are very slim he'll be ready for San Francisco's venture into the central time zone. The 49ers simply have nothing to gain by declaring him "out" two days ahead of time. He was held out of Tuesday's practice. We expect Willis to sit, and for Michael Wilhoite to fill in. It's a massive downgrade for a Niners team that's on the ropes.

49ers ILB Patrick Willis (groin) is undergoing an MRI on Monday, and is not expected to be available for Thursday night's game against the Rams.

Coach Jim Harbaugh has yet to officially rule Willis out, but the odds are slim-to-none that he's ready to return after just three days. Michael Wilhoite filled in for Willis on Sunday, and would likely start against the Rams.

49ers ILB Patrick Willis was forced from Sunday's game against the Colts with a groin injury, and will not return.

It's an ill-timed injury for the 49ers, as they've got the Week 4 Thursday night game. Willis was ruled out quickly after departing, suggesting it's more than just a tweak. Willis' status will be updated no later than Monday.

Patrick Willis was not wearing a glove or extra padding on his broken right hand during Wednesday's practice.

Willis has full clearance to play in Sunday's showdown with the Packers. The six-time Pro Bowler (in six NFL seasons) is practicing in full. Willis comes in at No. 6 in our Week 1 IDP rankings, behind only Luke Kuechly, Chad Greenway, teammate Navorro Bowman, Paul Posluszny and Sean Lee.

49ers ILB Patrick Willis (broken hand) has resumed practicing, and remains on pace to start in next week's opener.

Coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed as much Tuesday. Willis has missed just four games in six seasons.

49ers ILB Patrick Willis will require surgery on his slightly fractured right hand.

He'll be sidelined "only a few weeks" and is expected back in "plenty of time" for the regular season opener. An injury like this is far less concerning for a player of Willis' track record and caliber. He's also played through broken hands before. Less camp time may even help Willis with fresher early-season legs.
