Cowboys DT Amobi Okoye has recovered from a "one-in-a-million" syndrome that put him in a lengthy coma and left him with a 145-day gap in his memory.

The Cowboys and Okoye were previously hush-hush on the exact "illness" that had stricken the 27-year-old. He contracted anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, an autoimmune syndrome that is potentially fatal. Okoye experienced a series of seizures and was out of football for 17 months. Okoye is reunited with DC Rod Marinelli and is competing for a rotational role in Dallas.

Okoye signed a one-year, $1.3 million deal with the Bucs in April, but lost his roster spot due to knee woes. The Bears were quick to swoop in after he compiled 27 tackles and four sacks for them in 2011.

A former first-round pick, Okoye started 59 games over the past five seasons, and will likely be part of a three-man rotation with 2011 starters Gerald McCoy and Brian Price. Entering his age-24 campaign, Okoye has upside, and is capable of providing an interior pass rush. He registered four sacks in 16 appearances with the Bears last season.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, the Buccaneers' interest in free agent DT Amobi Okoye is "mutual."

The Times confirms Okoye is also receiving interest from the Broncos and Bengals, although the Buccaneers could offer him significant playing time in a three-man rotation. Usual third DT Roy Miller is coming off a poor year. Okoye could be the top reserve behind Gerald McCoy and Brian Price.
