Free agent DT Amobi Okoye (illness) is hoping to make an NFL comeback.

Okoye was placed in a medically induced coma for three months in 2013 after being diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease which caused seizures and convulsions during workouts. Okoye's recovery included relearning basic functions like speaking, walking and eating, but he is now back up to 300 pounds and fully cleared for football activities. Still only 29 years old, Okoye was cut by the Cowboys in April of 2015 and has not played a snap since 2012. He faces long odds of an NFL return, but we wish him the best of luck.

The Cowboys will not activate DT Amobi Okoye (illness) from the reserve/NFI list.

It means Okoye will officially miss the entire season. Okoye last played in 2012. His career was derailed by anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, an extremely rare, but potentially fatal, illness. Okoye has been in the league since 2007, but is still only 27. He could return for next season. He's under contract with the Cowboys.

Cowboys DT Amobi Okoye has recovered from a "one-in-a-million" syndrome that put him in a lengthy coma and left him with a 145-day gap in his memory.

The Cowboys and Okoye were previously hush-hush on the exact "illness" that had stricken the 27-year-old. He contracted anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, an autoimmune syndrome that is potentially fatal. Okoye experienced a series of seizures and was out of football for 17 months. Okoye is reunited with DC Rod Marinelli and is competing for a rotational role in Dallas.

Cowboys DT Amobi Okoye (illness) has been cleared to practice.

He should practice next week. Okoye is returning from an illness that wiped out his entire 2013. He's fighting for a reserve role along the Cowboys' patchwork defensive line. Provided he can get in shape, he should crack Dallas' 53-man roster. No team is thinner up front than owner/GM Jerry Jones' Cowboys.

Cowboys DT Amobi Okoye (illness) is "recovering well and getting close."

Okoye remains hopeful he'll be cleared for camp, though he's still a candidate to begin on the active/PUP list. Okoye's undisclosed ailment kept him out for all of 2013. Any contributions the Cowboys' depleted defensive line gets from Okoye this season will be a bonus.

Bears agreed to terms with free agent DT Amobi Okoye, formerly of the Bucs.

Okoye signed a one-year, $1.3 million deal with the Bucs in April, but lost his roster spot due to knee woes. The Bears were quick to swoop in after he compiled 27 tackles and four sacks for them in 2011.

Bucs DT Amobi Okoye's knee has continued to be a problem throughout training camp despite his June scope.

"It’s not just one surgery," said coach Greg Schiano. "He has a history with that knee." Okoye has missed the Bucs' last two preseason games and practiced sparingly. Tampa Bay's interior defensive line is going to be a major weakness again this year. They'll be a running game to target in fantasy matchups.
